Report: Pixar board to approve Disney takeover Monday

“The board of Pixar Animation Studios, the digital animations company, is set to meet [Monday] to approve the company’s $7bn (£3.9bn) takeover by Disney,” Andrew Murray-Watson reports for The Telegraph. “The all-share deal will make Steve Jobs, the chief executive of Apple, around $3.5bn and the single largest shareholder in Disney. Jobs created Pixar in 1986 when he paid $10m for the computer animations division of Lucasfilm, owned by Stars Wars creator George Lucas.”

  1. Even if there are many positives to this deal, it still makes me sick to think about.

The “Disney” name carries an aura of cuteness, cheapness, uncreativeness, desperation, greed, and total cluelessness. There’s too many damn uncreative, cowardly, greedy suits calling ther shots over there and I just feel it’s gonna hurt the pixar name.

  2. I hope Pixar can turn this into a reverse takeover a la Next/Apple and reinvigorate Disney. But I doubt it. Disney is the most formulaic, hackneyed content provider out there. Expect Pixar movies to really go downhill. Oh, and look for Toy Story 3 rushed to market any day now.

  3. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    [inhale]

    [exhale]

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    (repeat if necessary).

This could only mean one thing. Steve feels that the Apple side of things is more interesting.

    Let me reiterate:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  4. Watch for Apple to begin to show up at every Disney attraction in both featured status and in on site mini stores selling ipods and accessories, be featured prominently in every Disney film and ABC television show, for more Apple commercials to air on ABC (though not exclusively), and for Apple to leverage it’s ownership position to grow Apple faster than you ever thought possible. Pixar’s influence will be to return Disney to a basic understanding of the importance of STORY to every film, animated or live action…and to restore the spirit of innovation that left when Walt died.
Is Steve Jobs the new Walt Disney. No. He’s actually smarter.

  5. “why would Jobs do this?? for what reason, I just don’t understand”

You’re kidding right? Duuhhh…. It’s the money $tupid!! Jobs, Gates, ect, when they’re at that level, it’s all about money and power. And if you believe anthing else then you’re a fool!

  6. This is very bad for Pixar, which will now be used for all future “Chicken Little” projects. It’s really sad, and it’s the death of the Lucas/Jobs project with created some groundbreaking films. There is nothing better for killing innovation and creativity than getting swallowed by a gigantic corporation like Disney. Oh well…Pixar had a good run and we have some great movies to watch on DVD.

  7. I believe the Disney / Pixar deal is a wonderful thing for Apple because when I think of all the other deals Steve Jobs has made, he uses a very skillfull infiltrate and take over strategy. Look how he sold Next to Apple only to take over and basically regain his kingdom as an outsider. This deal with Disney smells like the same thing to me. Remember, Jobs is getting better at dealing with big companies and getting millions of people to follow his vision. Not only will Jobs have creative control (I hope / He better) but he will have unfettered access to Disney owned distribution of content from:

    ABC Television Network
    WLS – Chicago

    KFSN – Fresno

Not just having direct access to all these platforms on radio, Television, cable, and music, but Jobs will also have access to Disney money.

If you ask me, this deal helps Pixar and Apple much more than it helps Disney. I think Jobs just wants some strong partners to push his dreams without actually using his hard earned apple revenues. Disney wants some new people and fresh ideas, especially since they got rid of Isner a little while ago. Their new CEO and Jobs look pretty happy during those press releases a few months ago…

We will see, but I predict stock prices for both companies going up and Apple products getting very large boosts in content, and distribution, especially movies and possibly the introduction of a whole line of children’s and family style entertainment; hey Steve, where’s my iPhone?

  8. As requested DisneyPorn is here!

    http://www.disneypornland.com/

Steve Jobs is wise to sell Pixar, a buisness is a investment and one hopes and dreams of selling it as the ultimate reward symbol of their creation.

It’s like when a artist sells a painting, it’s the closing of a final chapter.

Now that Pixar is gone Steve Jobs can forget about it and concentrate on increasing Macintosh market share.

He has this thing that Bill Gates bested him and it was only done because of John “the judas” Scully’s betrayal.

Steve Jobs should have been at the helm of the largest OS in the world.

  9. I agree with MacDude

Pixar is just an animation studio and Disney was the marketing arm for their films. This doesn’t change any of that.

At 50+ I doubt Steve Jobs has the energy to run 2 companies. He can now dedicate 100% of his time to Apple which I need more than to have him run Pixar. He can now have significance influence over Disney w/out having to deal with day to day details.

    This is a good thing

  10. Remember, its John Lassetter who is the creative genius behind Pixar. Steve knows when he’s got a good thing with the staff assembled there. I suspect there are really strong reasons for agreeing to the takeover – and its NOT about the money. Steve is trying to take up the gauntlet against Gates again so this is more about leveraging an opportunity for Apple whilst continuing to grow Pixar.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that things continue to flourish.

  11. I agree with Reginald.

This is a going to work out for apple and pixar. Jobs gets what he wants. The content of everything Disney has. This will make itunes video the king of the hill in video for a long time. Imagine anyone trying to compete without the ABC, ESPN, and Disney Channel shows. Reginald is really good at seeing what Disney owns. I like that research man. You should speak more on these boards. Thats really good knowledge of why this will help pixar and apple. Also the reason this helps pixar is that before this Disney had the rights to make sequels of past movies. This would have hurt the creative value of the characters and the movies of past Pixar success. Pixar probably didn’t want to make a third Toy Story because they wanted to wait till they were out of the 7 picture deal. That would just give Disney a real big hit. But now if Disney buys Pixar, Pixar can now make another Toy Story or Bugs Life movie the way Pixar wants to make it. I think Pixar, because it is in northern Califonia instead of the way Hollywood works down in Southern California Helps. Pixar can basically do what they want. A excutive can come and visit, but once they leave Pixar goes to what they want to do. I for one like this deal if Pixar if they are running out of ideas on movies, can use Past movies to make quality sequels the Pixar way. Just see how Shrek2 did better then Shrek one, same with Toy Story one and toy story 2. Toy Story 3 will do very well. It has been 5 years now, so many kids and even adults want to see Woody and Buzz.

Apple wins big with itunes video store. Can’t wait till they can showcase the whole libarary on itunes. Imagine getting ESPN classic. jeopardy, Compress Monday Night Football ( Now ESPN football), and for females Oprah. Even classic Oprah with special quest appearences. I think both all three Steve Job companies will do very well with this deal. My Take.

  12. The comments in the forum are entirely too negative. The Disney name doesn’t mean greed and uncraetiveness, if that’s even a word. Lately Disney has been in a bad place but through most of it’s history it has made great content, and it could get back to that place in the future. Gaining Pixar could really help that. For years all of the best animators have been going to Pixar, then Dreamworks, then Disney in that order, which is why it has been so hard for disney to bring themselves out of their slump. With Pixar’s talent it could turn them around and with the Jobs connection of content and delivery it could be great for both Disney and Apple.

None of us can be sure that Pixar will save Disney or that Dinsey will ruin Pixar, but my guess is that this will be mostly good for both companies. If it wasn’t a great opportunity Steve wouldn’t do it, he isn’t often wrong. Sometimes, but not often.

  13. ok, off topic.. but hilarious.

I upgraded my virtual PC last July because there are some progs that I have to have that only run on a pc. I bought it with a $30 mail in rebate from Microsoft.

After 6 months, 6 phone calls, and 8 emails, I finally got the stupid 30 bucks…

they have NO IDEA what the meaning of customer service is over there.

MDN word is “road” as in I hope MS is the next decade’s road kill.

  14. Wow, just wow.

I hope this ends up being a promotion for Lasseter and not a dead end into a corporate quagmire.

Pixar left Disney animation in the dust. As said already, their writing is the key. Let’s hope they bring the Disney name back up rather than be subsumed into mediocrity.

The L.A. – Emeryville logistics should be interesting.

    again, wow

  15. Quoted post: “The “Disney” name carries an aura of cuteness, cheapness, uncreativeness, desperation, greed, and total cluelessness. There’s too many damn uncreative, cowardly, greedy suits calling ther shots over there”

    Agreed. I don’t like this.

But I’m more interested in Apple and I don’t see this hurting them.

Quoted post: “it could get back to that place in the future.”

Also agreed. I doubt it, but maybe Disney will become a responsible, compassionate company again.

  16. First of all, I bet that Cars is going to be so successful that it will alone justify the cost of this takeover. The NASCAR moms and kids will go nuts over it — BOOM!

At least now all of Disney will go back to the mac platform.

I had an interview there a few years ago and the office reception woman had a friggin g4 cube on her desk! She didn’t know anything about it, and I don’t think she even liked it since it was probably still running OS 9, but it was memorable.

It used to be a mac friendly place, and the largest shareholder better try and switch them, dammit!

  17. It’s ironic to me that the very people who are crying that Disney is going nowhere, and is not a good investment, are the same people who preach about Steve coming back to Apple and bringing them from beleaguered to where they are now.

Are you guys afraid that he can’t do it again? I’m not.

  18. Does this mean Steve gets a Disneyland gold card?
Hey Steve, can you do something about those lines for the rides?

“Nickelodeon, we’re coming after you, you’re in our sights.”

  19. It’s all about the content and control. The access. Disney was great at one time, then it turned into a slockfest controlled by suits with no talent. Sounds a little like Apple’s history. I think Jobs sees the parallels and the challenges. Other companies will be cranking cankers though since they know the amount of media Jobs could have access to. Media that is tied into the Itunes music store and ipod.

  20. Think about it guys…

JOBS WILL BE THE LARGEST SHARE HOLDER IN DISNEY!!

Do you know what this means?

It means Jobs will basically control disney.

With this deal he hasn’t given disney anything. He used pixar as the golden carrot to get control of Disney. He is majority shareholder, therefore in a prime position to take full control of disney, and therefore expect the Apple logo on EVERYTHING!

This is one hell of a clever business move.

Everyone wins – Disney get pixar, Jobs get disney and pixar, apple will get there branding on anything they want and will have exclusive deals with disney for all content only on itunes!

    What a move!!

  21. This “news” is from a UK paper. They don’t know squat. The deal is still far from done.

As for what percentage? Pixar is roughly $7B. Disney is roughly $50B. Steve owns half of Pixar’s shares. The rest is math.

  22. “Remember, its John Lassetter who is the creative genius behind Pixar.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that things continue to flourish.”

You all know where John Lasseter worked before he weht to Pixar, right?

    Disney.

This deal, if the story is true, will change nothing regarding the quality of Pixar films.

  23. How old are Bill Gates’s kids?

I can just envision B&M Gates sitting down with the family to Toy Story 3. Next thing he sees is free Apple product placement all over the screen. ANDY GETS AN iMAC for whatever occasion, and the Woody and Buzz whip up some cool tunes with GarageBand and make billions in Monopoly money with their groove on iTunes!!!

The nightmare is just beginning for BG and MS and there will be no </end> to it!

  24. Steve Jobs would be the greatest SINGLE shareholder. Not have the biggest post of shares bar none.
And as musch as I love Pixar, I really think this is a good move for Apple. All of Disneys content available on iTunes or whatever the next big thing is…
Well, I dunno, maybe, maybe nt.

  25. The only thing that doesn’t smell right about this is the money.

Pixar is worth a shade of $7 billion today, with no apparent takeover premium in effect.

I would imagine that the deal may actually be for as much as $8-8.5 billion, which – if true – would give SPJ around $4.25 billion worth of stock, or just under 10% of Disney, and around 2.5 times as much stock as even the largest institutional shareholders (Citigroup, with Barclays following closely behind).

A further note of future interest is revealed by digging around a little: three of Disney’s five largest institutional shareholders (Barclays, FMR and State Street) are also Apple’s largest institutional shareholders and, between them, they control another $4.8 billion of Disney stock.

The question here is that, if there were ever a civil war between a Jobs cabal and a “reactionary” Hollywood camp, whose view of the future would the institutions back?

  26. Hey KenC,

What the hell has the fact it is a UK paper got to do with it? The London foreign exchange market is the largest in the world, with an average daily turnover of $504 billion, more than the New York and Tokyo exchanges combined, so when it comes to business I would rather listen to a UK paper than some piss poor rag from the US.

    Tim Coughlin
    http://timcoughlin.typepad.com

  27. Repeating myself, I know, but if this is true, it is Bob Iger who is orchestrating it. Bob wants to clear out Eisner’s people and get the company back to being creative, and this is the perfect way to do it.

Under Bob Iger, ABC commissioned Lost and Desperate Housewives, two of the most commercial and popular US-produced global hits from the past three years. I think he’s nurtured something at ABC that he wants to take to the rest of the company.

IMHO, he also needs to get the Weinsteins back at Miramax. Without them, Miramax is dead in the water.

  28. Just as the companies of Pixar and Apple did not really cooperate – Pixar did not use Apple computers, Apple did not get to use the Pixar characters in Promotions or did not put little Apple computers in their animations,
neither will Apple have anything special to do with Disney.
Something else is going on here that we don´t know that is why Steve has been trying to sell. And I doubt it is some great positive thing for Apple. Pixar burned out, Steve burned out with Pixar, Steve wants to enlarge his portfolio…But nothing about the Pixar deal has anything to do with Apple.

  29. Pixar did not use Apple computers

    bzzzz wrong answer.

Pixar used a mix of equipment BEFORE Steve Jobs return to Apple (because Apple was floundering then) and when the release of the G5 based Mac’s began, Steve then made Pixar mostly all Mac G5 house. Including the renderfarm which used to be Linux PC servers is now propbally Linux on G5 servers.

(Linux is a very customizable and can be made bloat free to run faster)

Renderman, the software Pixar and Jobs created runs on Mac’s as a Maya plugin now.

  30. History repeats itself:

Steve jobs built NeXT from $0 million
NeXT bought Apple (not really) for $420 million
Apple is now worth $70 billion

    now

Steve jobs bought Pixar for $10 million
Pixar bought Disney for $7 billion
Disney will soon be worth $??? million

Is this guy a good builder of worth or WHAT! Now, if only SJ can build Disney into the best entertainment portal on the Internet…

  31. All us armchair pundits are overemphasising the importance of the Apple-Steve Jobs-Pixar relationship.

My bet – little or no Disney connection….other than maybe Steve being a stock holder….and “advisor” to Pixar/Disney during the transition.

Steve may be a computer visionary, but I think Steve never really got the creative animation thing – just look at how weak (and stolen ideas) the last commercials Steve has put out for Apple.
(I bet when the history comes out about Steve and Pixar the stories will be about he just didn´t get it – “Monsters that talk??? Nobody wants to see that!” “Why is his name Buzz Lightyear – wouldn´t Zip Lightyear be better???”

The big winner – Disney; if it keeps John Lasseter and the rest of the geniuses at Pixar.
John Lasseter – if he gets more control over the animation of all Disney properties.
    Jobs – he got richer.
Loser – Apple. It never got much from Steve owning Apple and will have less clout in Hollywood la-la land now that Pixar has been severed from the perceived relationship between Apple-Steve Jobs-Pixar relationship.

  32. Yeah – MacDude – Apple until very recently has taken a back seat at Pixar.
I like the sentence fromlink above:

“..when it switched its artists from SGI-based desktop computers to Linux-based Intel workstations manufactured by Dell.”

In 2003 Pixar was using DELL computers!!!

  33. Correction to last sentence above:

Loser – Apple. Apple never got much from Steve owning Pixar and will have less clout in Hollywood la-la land now that Pixar has been severed from the perceived importance between the Apple-Steve Jobs-Pixar relationship.

  34. I can just see it a couple of years back, Steve is doing his semi-annual visit to Pixar studios and sees all the animation work being done on Intel processors.
“Why you guys using Intel?”, says Steve.

John L.: “Because they are a lot faster than those PowerPC things you sell. You oughta think of shifting Apple to Intel”.

And so it was….and Steve stopped drinking his own Kool-aid.

  35. Steve jobs saw an opportunity, and pounced on it. Did he have this planned the whole while? Who knows, Steve Jobs does tho. Really tho, with the content they will gain for video, this is a HUGE bonus for Apple, indisputably so. What I REALLY see here though, is a chance for Apple to ADVERTISE! And if they don’t this is only a half assed job by Jobs. Of course no paperwork has been signed yet between Disney and Pixar over this, but I can honestly say I would LOVE to see new apple commercials on the Disney channel no? All thsoe kids sucking it up and Disney using nothing but apple computers.. oh yes.. there is a chance here, lets see if it works.

  36. The risk here can be that Steve Jobs now spends far time involved with Disney than he had to with Pixar. That can mean less time involved in Apple. Many know that investment in Apple is really an investment in Steve Jobs. Any time or energy loss from Apple can only hurt Apple.

And I have other concerns about this.
    Like others, I am uncomfortable.

  37. That’s right Jobs, take the money and run. Pixar has peaked and it cannot keep up the hits it’s been producing for another X number of years. sell it while it’s on a high. He’ll be laughing all the way to the bank and John L. will be the fall guy in 5 years

The golden years are over for Pixar, and Disney will suffocate it to death like every thing else it touches.

  38. I work for Disney.

So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what
    you are talking about.

    But trust me…. You don’t.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality
you dont know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you dont know about the topic….Dont make yourself sound like you do.

Cuz some Macheads believe anything they hear.

  39. Mort–you silly boy. ALL things that involve Steve are MAC NEWS. You must be new to the Cult.

If you don’t think this will involve Apple in any way, you are not thinking about it deep enough.

I have mixed feelings…but Steve must have a reason for this. I’m going on blind faith.

  40. MacTypeDude – Apple did not own Pixar. Steve Jobs owned 50+% of Pixar. He also happens to be the boss of Apple.
Apple, the company, has nothing to do with Pixar, the company.
And these are not privately owned companies. Stockholders own these companies.

    ————

Tom Strong – Yeah, you work at Disney…LOL…I think I saw you wearing the Goofy costume at Disneyland last Saturday afternoon. My son kicked you in the nuts.

  41. I work at Disney too.

This has been in the work for four months now.

But there is a HUGE twist I can not even hint at.

We will all know in May. But I said too much as it is.

    ?

  42. Solar Flare: “JOBS WILL BE THE LARGEST SHARE HOLDER IN DISNEY!!

Do you know what this means?

It means Jobs will basically control disney.”

ted turner is the largest shareholder of aol/time warner & even he admits he has little influence; i believe his share is less than 10%

jobs share would probably not exceed 7%

  43. Apple will get to be put on iTunes the content lots and lots and lots and lots of content!!! Welcome to the world of all media on demand for us when we want it platform independent, and all for .25 cents to 1.99 to view. This will be seen in the future as the tipping point for when it all became available on line.

    Scott Seifert
Welcome to the future! It is going to rock and be really really convenient!

  44. Ian Norry and Joell,
The correct answer is that Jobs will own 50.4% of Disney. At least this is what has been reported in all the major news media outlets all week wrong.

  45. hello i have the breaking news so everyone shut up.

the guy who claimed to work at disney knowing of a twist and an announcement in may is 100% correct. i am benardo disney.

what exactly will happen is the following. pixar will announce in may that they have actually produced biological animated creatures.

there is currently an ugly living beast created by pixar that is locked up in a cage in a basement at disney HQ. in may we will set him free and conquer the world.

  46. There is no way Steve would own 50.4% of Disney. He owns none of it now, and about 51% of pixar. Unless he owned all of pixar, and the companies were the same size, which they aren’t, he could never own a majority of disney. Based on 51% of 7 billion into a company already worth 50 billion Steve will own 6-8% of disney.

  47. SJ owns that share of Pixar, NOT Disney. I think there is something big going on here that will also benefit Apple. I predict SJ will be chairman of Disney before too long, but he will never be interested in taking over as CEO. When it comes to overseeing day-to-day, SJ’s heart remains with Apple–if only to (eventually) beat Bill Gates! SJ and Iger are forming a very important partnership, and many things will come out of that over time. Iger is no Eisner; he seems intent on creating a new golden age for Disney, and he seems smart enough to know that he will need powerful allies to do it.
I don’t know if Iger/SJ will succeed (I hope they do!), but mark my words…
    Jake

  48. I predict Steve Jobs will get a Job at Disney.

I predict Intel will buy Apple and will license the OSX operating system to any computer maker.

I know that any program that has to use Rosetta runs like a pig in deep mud. And will not run any preOSX program.

I know I will be waiting awhile before I buy my next Mac.

  49. el stupid – u need rosetta to run apps like photoshop on the mactel. rosetta makes photoshop go slow….no matter what generation of mactel u got.
i 2 am waiting until photoshop and others don´t need to use rosetta which
    will
    be
    the 4th
    gen of the mactel…..

    —
p.s. u all – apple has nothing to do with the sale of pixar.
pixar is not owned by apple. apple is not owned by steve jobs.
surely steve jobs has investments in other companies…are they effected by what apple does, does apple effect them???

  50. el taco. You don’t understand do you?. You don’t need a fourth gen as long as the software developers comes out with universal binary(NATIVE) that doesn’t require rosetta, like iWork 06 and iLife 06.

ROSETTA IS SOFTWARE NOT HARDWARE!!!!! It’s built into Mac OS X!!!!!!!.

  51. “i 2 am waiting until photoshop and others don´t need to use rosetta which
    will
    be
    the 4th
    gen of the mactel…..”

Makes no sense. Universal binary applications that doesn’t need Rosetta will work on any generation.

  52. Look – no one knows what this means and this is all speculation as to the outcome – Except that iTunes will probably get preferential treatment from all of Disney’s media outlets (which is A LOT!).

Like others have stated…Pixar and Apple are TOTALLY distinct companies and are not related in anyway.

It’s all about the money. It always has been and it always will be.

I’m sorry to say, but the word “visonary” is a bit over-hyped when applied to Jobs (Yes, some of his “visions” have been spot-on, but others – not quite what I would call successful). The guy has done great things for Apple since his return (or at least everyone gives him credit for it), but I don’t get all “warm and fuzzy” every time I hear his name mentioned in some news article. Jef Raskin, the ORIGINATOR of the Macintosh project quit when it was handed over to Jobs. One of the reasons in his resignation was that Jobs does not give credit where credit is due. I don’t think this has changed.

Now, I don’t claim to have “secret” inside information about Apple as a company. Who knows, maybe SJ calls EVERY SINGLE SHOT and truly is a visionary. My guess is that it is somewhere in-between.

People tend get Apple and SJ mixed up. Steve Jobs is a human being and Apple is a Corporation. They are two separate entities. Because SJ is the spokesman for Apple (and does one hell of a great job at it), people think SJ IS Apple. NOT SO.

I love the Mac (I truly do), but I’ve been around this game long enough to know one thing – Steve Jobs only cares about one thing – Steve Jobs.

I will reiterate: It’s all about the money. It always has been and it always will be. Flame away…but face the truth – it’s painful.

  53. “Apple will get to be put on iTunes the content lots and lots and lots and lots of content!!! Welcome to the world of all media on demand for us when we want it platform independent, and all for .25 cents to 1.99 to view. This will be seen in the future as the tipping point for when it all became available on line.

Welcome to the future! It is going to rock and be really really convenient!”

Another example of: GIVE ME CONVENIENCE OR GIVE ME DEATH!

  54. SteveCoughlin,
Not to put down all UK papers, but did you read the Telegraph article? The headline states “approves”, but when you read the article, it doesn’t add one additional bit of information to what has been reported in the WSJ and NYTs. In other words, they use “approves” in the headline, when they do not support that anywhere in the body of the accompanying article.

    That’s rubbish.
