Here is the new Quad processor from the PowerMac G5. Note the dual cooling pumps and massive heat exchanger. Even the Voltage regulator has a huge heatsink. Keeps my room warm at night. ![]()

That thing looks like an Indy Car engine! Only faster…
Tim Allen would have an orgasm.
Nice. I’m Lovi… ooppss.
No wonder Apple is switching to Intel…future PPC CPUs will need a cooling system equivalent to what a nuclear reactor has at this rate…
Tim Allen would have some more Coke.
No joke – I’m literally setting up my Quad right now. Received it at the office this morning. 4x1GB ECC RAM and the 7800 video card – WHOA! Previous computer was a Quicksilver…
Happy New Year Everyone!
Amazing isn’t it. The quad is on my to order list for mid January around about the week of MWSF. Maybe an update will be announced in time?
Anyone know how much one of these things weigh? No wonder they’re swiching over to Intel. It makes me think that there really isn’t a 2.5 GHz PPC processor, but an over clocked 1.8 or 2.0 that needs all this to function at the higher speed. Apple is right in dumping IBM, imagine what they’ve gone through internally to keep the PowerBook line going.

shesh, got to pat myself on the back nowadays and don’t tell me MDN saw it first because it’s impossible.
Ok MDN is just trying to piss me off I know, so what?
haha, oh brother that post got deleted quick, must have misspelled my email adddy when i submitted the link
LOL this is just too much fun, need I change my IP and delete my cookies again? LOL
Help me somebody I’m seeing things, pink and blue new years elephants are crossing my eyes.
I’m just hot for my body.
nice pics, still leary of bios and intel, I want a quad BAD!
The last of the g5 interceptors??
“No wonder Apple is switching to Intel”
Well, no, it’s not no wonder. They’re doing it so they can have reasonable battery life and good performance with duals in the powerbooks, not because the Quad G5 throws off too much heat. By this time next year Apple might have Quad Intels, who knows. But I betcha it’ll be quite a bit more than a year before a Quad Intel can blow the doors off a Quad G5. Personally I don’t really care how much heat the Quad generates as long as it won’t trip my breakers and it’s quiet, which it is, even when loaded to the gills.
Man, that thing is crazy. My guess is that you can’t pick one of those cooling units up at the computer wholesale shop downtown. How often do you have to change the oil on that thing?

As scottm4321 says no wonder Apple are switching to Intel, though the weight is one factor.
Yes a PowerMac with Intel’s “Yonah” inside, Intels answer to dual-core processing, will certainly beat the IBM G5 dual-core in the Quad – but as will newer chips as time passes by.
Not so long ago my current G4 450 dual-single core was thought as being top of the range and powerful. Yes Moore’s law is supposed to have been beaten and no longer relevent.
Even today’s dual-cores will become “old-hat” and outdated/outmoded, especially once a new much more capable material or substance can be found to replace silicon as it is this aspect – silicon – that currently holds back further development in CPU manufacture and design.
Just so that you know I own 4 Macs, with the last purchase being a PowerBook 1Ghz, Combo, an eMac with an upgraded Superdrive – Pioneer’s 110D and my first Mac, which I still use, a G3 B/W Yosemite. Yes I will have 5 Macs once I have got the Quad.
Looks like the hoses in my car. What happens is a G5 hose leaks?
Apple repair person – “I’ve checked under the hood and replaced the coolant, but it looks like you need new hoses and a new head gasket. Try to keep it under 2 GHz in the future.”
Sailfish,
Just how do you change your IP address?
I just got done cleaning my air conditioner which is a window unit. Hey, they are using it to cool the Quad!
How much power does this thing take to run it? The electric bill each month just for the computer probably equals my entire apartment electric bill…..
For best results:
1. Use only 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM
2. Burn only -R DVD
3. Add only Prestone Antifreeze
Awww MDN you guys are A-OK
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
at the top of the page he has other links to pictures.
the dual 2.5 looks even more like a car engine and the rest of the links actually are cars
::laughter::
Wonder how often you have to change the thermostat?
Just how do you change your IP address?
Change your IP all you want, ISP’s have logs what account had what number at what time and day.
Entire ranges can be blocked as well so your whole ISP can be blocked if need be.
aahhh the last of the PPC G5 badboys, I’m getting one because intel chips are slow, DRM laden POS.
You’ll see when iTunes purchases get locked to the hardware along with all your software, OS etc.
No more SnapZ Pro X, no more Audio Hijack no more DVD rips…
It’s all over and Apple is going to sugar coat it.
I know exactly what’s going to happen, I’ve seen it before. Mac’s will not be viewed the same anymore, they will be just PC’s.
The charm will wear off and the Apple Stores will go dormant, because we know a Mac is no longer a mac, it’s a PC
horsepower matters now?
Steve is making an “ironclad” video and audio delivery machine to turn Apple into a video/audio distributor.
The trouble is everybody else is going to be using the same processor as Apple and they can make their own distribution system, too….and some own the content as well;e.g. Sony.
Soon they will all be switching to web based or subscription based software…
All these tech heads weren´t thinking freedom for the masses with computers, but rather how do we restrict the freedoms of the masses with computers. This new Intel chip is the start down the gloom and doom of control of your computer experience.
Save your current computer – 3, 5 10 years from now people will be paying top $$$ to own an “uncontrolled” computer.
Ohhhh, yeah, take it off, baby, yeah…you filthy little whore, yeah…
“Just how do you change your IP address?”
Proxy server like Netshade.
I have 8 quads sitting next to me in boxes. Too bad I can’t open any of them up right now. 🙁 We ordered 9 and one is running right now. I have a 1 ghz G4 at home, that thing needs to go after working on a quad…
No wonder Apple is switching to Intel…future PPC CPUs will need a cooling system equivalent to what a nuclear reactor has at this rate…
What do you mean, active cooling (liquid, super fan, etc…) on the x86 side has been in existence for years. Heck my old PC (powered by an AMD Athlon 1500+; though Intel is no better) sounds like a jet engine waiting for take off and helps the small heater keep the room nice and warm
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
I read that Jonathan Ive has been given a CBE in the UK Honours List…
I think our British Government should make Steve Jobs an Honorary Englishman and give him a Knighthood…
“Sir Steve Jobs” would set him apart a bit from Bill Shutgate, Michael Dellboy and Steve Ballmop…
Oh shit.. off topic and all but after writing the above post I see Gates has already got an honorary Knighthood. Stupid effing Governement we’ve got today… that’s yet ANOTHER thing we’ll come to regret in future years. Blair has a lot to answer for…
How often would an A/C tech have to check the Freon® in THAT thing?
Once in Autumn and again in the Spring??
Those internal CPU Juices must be nice and warm
Just got my 2.5 GHz Quad, 8 gig of RAM, 7800 video card, 1 Tera storage. Holy smokes …. this is one nasty race horsey! Relatively quiet, but have not run anything too heavy on it yet. Final Cut Pro processing video from my new Sony HD video camera and using multiple streams should separate the boys from the men.
What a Happy New Year here in the far north!
Happy in Helsinki…why only 1 tera storage???
And you forgot to give the model number of the Sony.
u is soooo full of da b.s.
u moma even buy you a used eMac for xmas?
