Report: Quanta and Asustek to partner with Apple on new Intel-based iBooks and PowerBooks

“Apple computer will adopt Intel processor next year. According to the understanding, the ODM order of new Apple notebook has been obtained by Quanta and Asustek,” EMSNow reports (Electronics Manufacturing Services).

“It will help increasing the total production of first quarter next year for both companies. However, Quanta and Asustek both make no comments on this. Apple computer stated it would exhibit its desktop and notebook with Intel processor at Macworld Expo in San Francisco, USA from 9th to 13th January next year,” EMSNow reports. “Quanta and Asustek are the main ODM notebook partners of Apple. Quanta is responsible to high level model, PowerBook and Asustek is in charge of entry level model, iBook.”

  1. This is MAJOR confirmation of a decktop (Mac mini) and notebook (iBook) for MacWorld – and 6 mo. ahead of schedule.

Thing is, why is this just coming to light now? Seems like they would need more than a 2-3 week ramp for production to be available at MacWorld.

  2. Emax i was wondering the same thing about spy shots, but nobody wants to get on the bad side of apple legal anymore I think. Steve has killed all spy shots, anticipation for MacWorld has never been so weird as long as i can remember! we always had something but never the less still exciting, I just wish we had more imagery attached to it. I don’t see this as a major confirmation thoug because APPLE NEVER STATED THAT NEW iBOOKS WERE BEING RELEASED IN JANUARY! I don’t know where this article gets that from, so I’ll also take this with a table spoon of salt

  3. Don’t know if this will dash anyone’s HOPE but there are some issues with the full story (see link in MDN story).

First, it says Apple stated wthey will exhibit these items at Mac World – that’s news to everyone. Second, the technical explaination in the full story link is inaccurate – “Apple initially used Apple processors provided exclusively by IBM” which makes me question the technical accuracy of the rest of the article. Finally, there is another interesting insight that doesn’t jibe with the whole desktop announcement – both these companies are noetbook OEMs (but this would bode well for a new Mac mini I suppose).

“Quanta and Asustek are the main ODM notebook partners of Apple. Quanta is responsible to high level model, Power Book and Asustek is in charge of entry level model, i-Book. This working module for Intel ODM will maintain for next year. Asustek will work on the consumer type of products and Quanta will be in charge of high-level model M1.”

  4. A motherboard manufacturer can produce a motherboard for a computer company like Dell 2 updates or changes a year, So Apple will be ready in January for at least 2 models. And Apple has been working on this project for the last 6 years behind closed doors.

  5. Sorry to bust your bubble(s), but spy photos spoil the fun.
Nothing compares to the tingle of seeing Sir Steve unveil a new product…
    Example:
“well this pocket was for the original iPod… have you ever wondered what this pocket is for?”
