Popular Science’s Best of What’s New 2005: Apple’s Spotlight search

“Most desktop search tools are perpetually a step behind, periodically snooping your machine to find new and changed files. But Spotlight, the search function in Apple’s new Tiger operating system, updates the instant anything changes because it’s built into the core of the OS. That integration also means that the search function is available in the Save and Open dialog boxes of other applications. And Spotlight searches more metadata—the information about a file, such as who created it or what camera it was taken with—than ever before, so as long as you sort of know what you’re looking for, you’ll probably find it. $130 (for the entire OS),” Popular Science reports.

  1. i had a dream that i couldn’t find the ingredients to make dinner for me and my fiance, so in my dream, i typed in the ingredients, and poof, they appeared on the kitchen counter. dang you apple… i wish life were that easy…

  2. I find it kind of strange that PS didn’t just say “Tiger,” enabling them to talk about the forty seven thousand other things that are great about Macintosh.

Ohhh, right, it’s a magazine, not a novel! They just didn’t have space!

  3. Why is their no coverage of these things when Microsoft wins an award?
Indirectly, Microsoft DID win since the Sony Vaio T350P is also on the Popular Science list, and it runs Windows.
Of course, MDN and the others here will never acknowledge anything of the sort.

  4. “Sony’s petite T350P finally frees you from the invisible umbilical of Wi-Fi. Although the laptop includes both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, it’s the first to also incorporate built-in access to Cingular’s EDGE wireless data network, giving you near-broadband speed (up to 135 Kbps) in about 85 percent of the country. 1.2GHz Pentium M; 10.6-inch screen; 60GB hard drive; From $2,100”

Windoze XP conspicious in its absence, NOT a selling point on this baby.

  5. First, it’s easier to take you seriously when you know how to spell.

Second, THERE isn’t coverage of Microsoft winning because this site is MACdailynews, and not microsoftdailynews.

If you want Microsoft information, why don’t you check out the oodles of Microsoft fan sites. There must be at least a few of them considering how probably 90% of the world proudly relies on that great, innovative company for their computing needs.

Actual MDN and others mention Mafiasoft’s “awards” all the time. It’s just not the kind of thing you probably would want to be reminded of on a regular basis. For example, I distinctly remember a recent MDN article that talks about Mafiasoft being way ahead of other OS’ in the malware race. Way to go Bill!

BTW, if you don’t like trolling this Apple/Mac related board why don’t you spend your valuable time over at DellNN.com, WindowsDailyNews.com, DellMinute, etc.?

    Rock on MDN!

  7. Seems to be a lot of MDN bashing going on here lately.

Seems that some think that MDN likes Apple Computer better Microsoft.

    I say DUH!

This site is ALL Apple Computer, for Apple Computer users and anyone else that wants to check up on Mac Computing.

and, That’s why I love it!
