HandBrake 0.7.0 has been released. HandBrake is a multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter for MacOS X. Older versions of HandBrakes are available for Linux and BeOS.
Supported sources:
• Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (even encrypted)
• PAL or NTSC
• AC-3, LPCM or MPEG audio tracks
Outputs:
• File format: MP4, AVI or OGM
• Video: MPEG-4 or H.264 (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer encoding)
• Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of several audio tracks)
• Misc features
• Chapter selection
• Basic subtitle support (burned into the picture)
• Integrated bitrate calculator
• Picture deinterlacing, cropping and scaling

Just tried it and the queue doesn’t work right. When ripping it names each successive movie “Movie.mp4” so it erases what it ripped previously. I haven’t found a way around it. Anyone else?

I’ve used Handbrake for since it was available for OSX and it is awesome and keeps getting better. The output quality can’t be beat by any of the the retail apps.
How does Handbrake compare to MactheRipper?

Rename your file in the box under the encoding type (Top Right) to WhatThisMovieIsNamed.mp4 or .m4v before you start encoding; Rename the second one before you add to the queue.

load the dvd into the computer before you log in. When you log in the DVD Player application won’t hijack control of the DVD from another region. Then you can Rip it with Handbrake.
For those of you who are new to the concept of video ripping you might want to check out the Handbrake discussions. In short, you have to know what your final use for the video is…a) for movies that you only want to view on an iPod or want a really small file size go with h.264. It gets a little “soft” when it is blown up to show on a TV or monitor. b) fo those who want something that looks good on an iPod and will look crisper on a TV screen, but are not worried about file size, use MPEG4 encoding.

Seriously now, I have 3 kids younger than age 10 in my house, DVD’s stand no chance againsed them. If they don’t get scratched beyond use, they are lost. There are a lot of people who want programs like this to stop distributing, but that is ridiculous. I am not going to pay for the same movie more than once. The movie industry is corrupt, and don’t support corruption.

Um I have just finnished ripping like 4 DVD’s that I own with the older version of Handbrake (07.0-beta3) into H.264 for my new iPod 5G (Which is on its way to me). Will these files work with my new iPod or will I have to encode all the DVD’s again with this new version?
About other regions: if DVD Player keeps launching and quizzing you about the region code, then you can just force-quit DVD Player and proceed to rip with Handbrake.

Every time I open the HandBrake app, my router lights up indicating network traffic of some sort. Is HandBrake “phoning home?” any cause for concern here?
