It includes fixes for:

– Core Graphics, Core Audio, Core Image, and RAW camera support
– disc recording when creating and burning media
– .Mac sync services
– Spotlight indexing and searching

– Address Book, AppleScript, Automator, Dictionary, Font Book, iCal, iSync, Mail, and Safari applications

Mac OS X 10.4.3 is available via Software Update (97MB) and also as a standalone installer. Two versions of the installer (Delta and Combo) are available from Apple Downloads as standalone updates. After you download an update, you can use it to update your computer without being connected to the Internet:

Hopefully this will clear up all the “bugs” and will clear up the bottlenecks in the current system. Will be waiting a few days watching Macfixit. Then, time to upgrade to Tiger for all us Panther lovers…

I don’t see anything about the defective single 1.8 G5 Powermacs in their update list.
When I ran the software updater it was only a 56.8 MB download. I hope I get all of it, since users are talking about a 97 MB download.
My combo download of the standard OS (for other computers I administer) also didn’t fully download. Meanwhile, I am now using SU to download the OS 10.4.3 Server update – which is 121 MB.

I downloaded directly from Software Update and the download was 56.8MB as well. I’ve already installed it and restarted my compter, everything’s fine.
Includes 40% more cowbell.
I downloaded and installed it and now my items sitting on my desktop are spaced really far apart and I can’t do anything to put them back close together – I guess i will have to keep less items out there.

I see that the desktop spacing problem is related to a 10pt font view – if you change it to 11 or more they all take up less space then if it is set to 10? Wierd..
I had to reboot 3 times for it to boot sucessfully after the update but now it works fine, haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary, the download was only 56Mb though (from 10.4.2)

Very cool. But they should throw this onto the page.
Noticed the comments about having problems rebooting, but I think maybe people aren’t waiting long enough after restart. My boot-up after restart took over 3 minutes with the fans blowing like h*ll, and I just left it alone, but was tempted to restart manually, thinking it was just taking too long and was hung up. Finally got the “Starting Mac OS X” screen and it, too, took about 3-4 minutes, but all is well now, and running great.
Also note that Spotlight appears to re-index after reboot.
I had just two hours ago run into a problem using Safari as an interface to a web-based tool when, lo and behold, 10.4.3 appears and my problem is fixed. Now that’s spooky!
System-wide RAW support…
You can now view RAW files in Preview.app and RAW files also show up in the Finder slideshow: I guess that RAW support should also work in any other slideshow capable apps (Mail?), or maybe even in iMovie too.
Haven’t tried everything yet.

iChat preferences now allow you to display emoticons (such as a smiley face) as text (such as ”

Resolves an issue in Activity Monitor in which you might see “iChatAgent (Not Responding)” in red text, even though iChat works just fine.
Addresses a “No data has been received for the last 10 seconds” alert that could often appear when participating in a video chat in iChat with someone using AIM on a PC.
.Mac members can enable encrypted chat sessions after installing this update.
Further addresses potential causes of persistent “insufficient bandwidth” alerts.
This upgrade just blew out my Mighty Mouse software. Even re-installing doesn’t work!

NOTE: after restart REPAIR PERMISSIONS – mine had a lot more than normal and I had repaired permissions late last week. Consider this a must.

Repair permissions both BEFORE AND AFTER the update.
I also did repair permissions as a matter of habit. As noted by previous posters, mine also caught a lot of changes. Oddly, though, when I verified the repairs afterwards, it caught all the same things again. I did it three times, and I still get a long list of repairs, all alike. So I wonder if anything is actually being repaired?
spotlight also works better in the Finder: it lets you type complete words before it starts searching… 10.4.2 used to start a search after 2 or 3 letters, further blocking keyboard input.
This is much appreciated as I was wary of showing the feature to new users as it was a bit of an embarassment…

I can vouch for that as well. I completely hated Spotlight just because of this issue, but now appears to be working very well. The fan seems to be a bit more active now, but not really problematic. Im hoping for Safari to be zippier as well.
Hmmmm… Apple.com is currently down for me. I’ve tried a few times and still nothing. It’s a stratch, but could this point to increased market share? (At least more that Apple expected?)

Great! After installation, iChat no longer works. Says “camera in use with another program” although no other programs apart from the finder is running.

I have noticed considerable speed increases in:
– Spotlight
– Launching System Preferences
On the other hand, I still get a three to five second freeze-up followed by the annoying beachball the first time I open the “Open” or “Save As…” window from within Word or Excel…

QuickTime bug still not resolved.
Can you guys try this? Fire up QT (I have 7.03), open any video then minimize the player so that it slides into the dock. Now click the player in the dock to bring it back to the desktop. Does it work? Not in my case; it remains in the dock/

You first, KeepHopeAlive. If I have to upgrade Orifice or Photoshit/Illfrustrator then I’m a happy laggard.
Just a couple of observations…
The first reboot after updating was painfully slow – more so than any update I can remember. The next was noticeably faster; the third was very fast.
After updating, my Powerbook (brand new 15″, 1.5 GB) started to use just about every available CPU cycle as soon as one application was launched. This was according to MenuMeters; nothing claimed the cycles in Activity Monitor. Either MenuMeters was acting up, or something was not being reported to Activity Monitor. At first, I thought Spotlight was re-indexing my hard drive, but this persisted even after a few reboots and about an hour of use. I ran Cocktail, rebooted, and all was well. My dual G5 didn’t have this problem at all. Has anybody else noticed this?

No QuickTime problems here. I minimized a video which kept playing while in the dock. I then maximized the video (normal and fullscreen) without any problems.
Oh yeah, I’m running Quicktime 7.0.3 Pro.

Followed those and installed. It rocks. 15″Powerbook, 1Ghz, 60Gb Hdd, was getting painstakingly slow. Tempted to clean out the stuff and reinstall or anything like that.
My daily backup, (in the background to a Lacie 160Gb USB Drive) using Silverkeeper, would take about an hour to complete. 3Mb pictures would take a long time to be checked and saved.
Now it flies through in 15 minutes! All programs are way faster, mac mini done as well, running happy again.
Best improvement since Tiger came out
I clicked on Software Update when I got home. I chose to download the update. Just when it had nearly downloaded it stopped, saying there had been an error and could not continue. So I tried again. Now it says there are no updates available at this time. So I go to Apple.com, downloads and select the featured download (Tiger 10.4.3) and click download. It downloads everything, installation begins, I Accept the user agreement, and it starts the install, next I get the message that says there has been an error and it cannot continue. So I try to restart my mac-mini. It stays stuck on the white screen with the gray apple. I have now performed an “Archive and Install” with my Tiger Install disk and am back online and don’t know what to do now. 🙁
I just reset Safari and opened it up again. Looks like macdailynews pop-under ads are now blocked by Safari.
Did anyone else see this?
The bug I had in 10.4.2 and Quicktime 7.0.3 pro, was also related to minimization and the dock.
In 10.4.2, open some windows in Quicktime Player, minimize them, switch to another application using command-tab, then switch back to QT player. In 10.4.2, windows will appear as they were before the minimization but they are unusable and have their traffic light windows controls activated (with the x – +), and their minimized version still appear in the Dock… Clicking on them on the Dock would fix the problem and make the unusable windows vanish.
10.4.3 FIXED this bug for me. One strange cosmetic bug remains, when maximizing QT windows, the x – + on the windows are always on, and other buttons appear disabled. Fortunately this time, the windows are useable and the buttons behave normally after (and including) the first click.

Downloaded the combo updater and did my dual processor G4. Everything worked great. Took the same updater to a lampshade G4 iMac and had errors on the install. Rebooting boots into Darwin. Guess I’ll have to do a complete reinstall on the iMac. Not a great loss, all it is is an iTunes machine. Yes, repaired permissions and all before.
Was Macdaily news sleazy enough to have pup-under ads? I have never had them fortunately.

Frank, regarding the QuickTime bug you mentioned, I had the same problem on Tiger until I removed from the Library a divx codec and a 3ivx codec I had installed. In fact, with these cosecs installed any running QT film that was minimized to the doc would stop running.
As for repairing permissions before and after install, I did that but every time I try to verify permissions I get the same errors. I repair permissions, I get the ok (permissions repaired) message but verifying again shows me the same problems. I hope more people here would try to dublicate the “bug” and let us know the results.
Try starting ‘Quartz Composer’ in Developer Tools. Mine reports:
“Unsupported configuration
Quartz Composer requires an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 Titanium or GeForce4 MX card or any ATI AGP RADEON card. A minimum of 16 mB VRAM is required.”
Homemade Quartz Composer screen savers also do not work. I have a G5 with a factory installed RADEON 850XT, so this should not be an issue.
Screen redraws and window actions (minimise, etc) are definitely quicker.
On a dual 1.4G G4 (FW800), and using the downloaded combo updater (so my son can get updated, who is on dialup), my preliminary results are:
Repaired permission before the update, and only a few items needed fixing. After the update, 4 items needed fixing (all in ./usr/lib/php/build/).
1st boot after the update took about 3 minutes, and massive disk activity for about 3-5 minutes after that (Spotlight doing its thing I’m guessing).
Safari now 100% passes the html compatibility tests! Try THAT with I.E!

When revealing the desktop in Expose, my windows move to the sides in a rather jerky motion, whereas before I’m sure it was a lot smoother. No big deal though.
DesignWorks and Douglas CADD (an OS9 app) both work as before, if anyone is interested in those. I am… they’re my bread & butter. Hope RealBasic 2005 still flies. Not tested yet.

Apple’s getting like Microsoft with its patches anymore. This place sounds like an XP forum.
With this new update a compose mail window in Mail now shows up two new icons (a lock and a star) to the right of the exclamation mark drop-down both are greyed out.
Any thoughts on what this may be?

Slow after reboot. So I tried again, and it’s still s-l-o-w!
Two things I’ve noticed so far:
• Safari seems to render web pages a lot faster now (it’s Snappier™)
• You can now verify your boot drive in Disk Utility. You still have to boot from another drive to repair, but at least you can check it without pulling out the install CD. Previously you had to use the CD (or boot from another drive) to verify or repair.

Well I think that I may have solved the Mighty Mouse issue that I had when I updated. I simply unplugged the Mighty Mouse, waited a couple of seconds and it was recognized for the Mighty Mouse, not some generic two-button mouse.
That fellow with iSight problems might try unplugging it and plugging it back in.
I can’t find find anything anything on KB on the MM issue.
97Mb installation. 1st reboot was slow, the 2nd was a little faster, and this morning very zippy. I never had any problems at all from Tiger before.

If you don’t know how to activate Quartz 2D extreme, then it doesn’t change anything for you, since it was always disabled by default on Tiger.
Things you will be missing are kernel crashes, since it’s disabled for a good reason.
A thing you should know is that Quartz 2D extreme is not the same as Quartz extreme, which exists and is enabled since Panther (or is it Jaguar?). Q2DE is more of a subset of it which accelerate 2d drawing functions. We can guess it’ll be ready for Leopard…
Doubt anyone will read this a day late but in my earlier post I mentioned the installation troubles with the iMac. Think it had some sort of drive problems. Any problem I experianced should’t be held against the updater. Reformatted and reinstalled and all is well.
Two more bug fixes in 10.4.3:
The sound control mechanism on iBooks/PowerBooks no longer stalls when audible feedback is off.
Safari 2.0.2 now correctly tabs between ALL input elements on web pages (this one was driving me crazy).
And, obviously… Spotlight is INCONCEIVABLY fast now. Is this all 10.4.3 or could it be partly due to simply reindexing?
The same thing happen to me, I started doing so updates for my mac, and then it just said there was en error, so I restarted my mac, and it just stays on white, with the gray apple, it does not continue, how can I solve this problem….?
