Apple today “unveiled the iPod nano, a super-thin MP3 player that will replace the iPod mini and begins shipping today,” Therese Poletti reports for The Mercury News. “‘Today we’re doing something pretty bold. This thing is thinner than a No. 2 pencil,’ crowed Jobs, who pulled the newest iPod from a small pocket in his blue jeans. ‘My prediciton is this will become the highest volume iPod in the world.'”
Poletti reports, “The nano, which weighs 1.5 ounces, roughly the weight of eight quarters. It is 80 percent smaller in volume than the original iPod and one-third the size of the current mini. A 4-gigabyte model that holds 1000 songs will cost $249. A 2-gigabyte version that holds 500 songs will cost $199. It also has a color screen and shows photos.”
“Jobs gave fresh statistics on the lead Apple’s iTunes commands on the digital music scene. The iTunes Music Store has sold more than a billion songs so far, and has an 82 percent share of the U.S. digital music market, and 80 percent of the U.K. market,” Poletti reports. “About 10 million people have iTunes accounts linked to their credit cards, Jobs said, and and customers spend an average of $60 per year in the store. He boasted that iTunes is now one of the largest online music marketplaces, second only to Amazon.com.”

Jobs’ crystal ball appears to be in perfect working order. Poletti’s report must have meant to state, “The iTunes Music Store has sold more than half a billion songs so far.”

Apple is making nice with their new buddies at Intel. They developed USB 1 and 2, if I’m not mistaken.
jo jo the dancer,
You have a valid point; my frustration/eagerness became ranting and I’m sure that Apple will eventually make me happy.
And when they do, I shall publicly eat crow here. ‘Nuff said.
jo jo the dancer,
Why are you calling Random Coolzip an ingrate? The point is, R.C. never RECEIVED his gift as promised.
You’d be at least mildly annoyed if you supposedly won something that never materialized, too. What good is a prize if it is never delivered? The company offering the prize makes out looking good for something they never fulfilled. Apple’s silence is puzzling.

you’re absolutely right, my bad. [jo jo bows his head in shame]
now i gotta go dance !
Regarding FireWire:
1. The bottleneck in loading the nano will be the flash memory, which is substantially slower than the hard drive employed in other iPods. That’s why it doesn’t matter if you use USB 2 or FireWire (which IS faster at loading other iPods). Both would have shipped more data to the nano that it could have written to its flash memory.
2. The specs say you can only use USB (2 or 1) to load songs. Some reviewer found out you can use FireWire to charge the device but not load it.
3. Since flash memory is so slow at writing, Apple probably decided to skip FireWire to save space and to save cost.
4. There are Apple users who do get screwed since they have only USB 1 and Firewire. The nano is not the machine for them.
So if video on iPod is ever released we’ll be watching on an even smaller screen ?
jo jo the dancer,
No biggie, but I do appreciate the jesture. It’s rare here.
Cheers.
The competition just died. Possibly .wma too. Whoo~hoo.

“Jobs gave fresh statistics on the lead Apple’s iTunes commands on the digital music scene. The iTunes Music Store has sold more than a billion songs so far…”
MDN, the music store has sold more than HALF a billion songs, I surprised no one else has caught this error. Tsk Tsk
Oops, someone did notice, sorry 🙁
The Tech Specs page of the iPod Nano only list USB, while the bigger iPods have FireWire listed. Perhaps the deal with Intel involves Apple phasing out FireWire. This is too bad because FW has always been better than USB.
Nano is the only iPod Micro killer. The design is amazing and many people will buy it on impulse only. The headphone port on the bottom will take some getting used to for anyone coming from an older iPod. The lanyard headphones are a good idea but I wonder if there is any danger of the Nano detaching from the dock connector on its own. Also, the line out must have been replaced by a headphone out signal through the dock connector; it would not be possible to change the volume of lanyard headphone using the click wheel if the nano has line out.
In other news:
Creative’s Sim Wong Hoo has just announced that the introduction of Apple’s iPod nano has caused him to thoroughly crap his pants. He also told reporters that he will, very shortly, be reaching for a revolver to put himself out of his own misery.
MaWo: ‘power’. As in, “It is impossible for Creative to withstand the iPod’s…”
jo jo the dancer, IT Guy…
Crow has an interesting flavor; FedEx arrived this morning. Still a 4GB Mini – not a Nano upgrade as I’d hoped, but meh.
Actually it looks like FedEx also screwed up; the box was marked “deliver by 07 SEP” and it arrived on the 8th. I still wish Apple had notified me (and presumably others) of the delay in shipping. It’s not as if they were waiting until the nano was released and upgrading. as was speculated. They’d said they “planned” to ship it the week of August 15th and finally *did* ship it (FedEx overnight) on September 6th.
I am sick of this delay in Apple getting the nano lanyard out to the public! I received my nano over a month ago and have only had it out in public once with the armband. My main method to wear, is with the lanyard that it was advertised with. I ordered the lanyard at the same time and it still appears it won’t ship out until 14 October. It’s a sad state of affairs that Apple (and I have only heard this – have never seen it) only initially shipped out a limited amount of the nano lanyards (I wonder how many – maybe a handful to reviewers). Surely they knew that the public would be in a craze to wear it as advertised w/lanyard. I have yet to see the nano lanyard anywhere. I think that Apple would not have experienced the degree of complaints about scratches had it made sure that the lanyard supply was as available as the nano. I only order my iPods directly from Apple (and this is my third directly from Apple) because I am a fan of the personailzation. Why is Apple so aloof in its ability to be proactive in keeping its customers informed?
