Microsoft ‘Longhorn’ to be named ‘Windows Vista’

Today Microsoft Corp. announced that the official name of its next version of the Windows operating system, formerly code-named “Longhorn,” will be “Windows Vista.” The Windows Vista Beta 1, targeted at developers and IT professionals, will be available by August 3rd 2005.

Microsoft have slapped up a website for “Windows Vista” that claims it’ll be “arriving in 2006” along with promises such as, “Windows Vista. It enables a new level of confidence in your PC and in your ability to get the most out of it. It introduces clear ways to organize and use information the way you want to use it. It seamlessly connects you to information, people, and devices that help you get the most out of life.”

In other words, it’ll still be trying to do everything a Mac has already done for years. Moo (sorry, too ingrained).

Merriam-Webster Online defines “vista” in part as, “a distant view” and “an extensive mental view (as over a stretch of time or a series of events).” Constantly slipping delays and extensive stripping of features?

Why wait for so little?

Instead of waiting for Windows Fresca, uh, Vista, find out more about Apple’s Mac OS X Tiger, the world’s most advanced operating system, here.

  1. Did it ever occur to you what a poor video presentation that was? I felt like I was watching a movie trailer from 1972! M$ is LAME – Bill Gates should be embarrassed! He has as much charisma as Steven Wright (you know, the comedian).

Anyway, Vista should be called “Visa”, as in “I need to buy a Mac instead on my Visa.”

  2. Dashboard dictionary ( why can’t you copy from it?)

    vista-noun
A pleasing view, esp. one seen through a long narrow opening.
a mental view of a succession of remembered and anticipated events.

ie. anticipated–keep waiting, waiting, waiting, waiti- wait, wa, wa , wa, wa.

  3. A week!! We should be so lucky.

People haven’t even decided on the name of the effing company yet, let alone it’s ‘newest’ (ie 5 years old) product!!!

    It’ll never stop, I tells ya 😀

  4. Didn’t Sputnik used to be more clever? He used to be a troll we could rely on to push some real emotional buttons and fan the flames. I think he quit a while back, leaving only poseurs to uphold his hard-won reputation.

  5. Why doesn’t M$ just call it what it truly is. Windows XP SP3. Calling it a Vista Cruiser or whatever doesn’t change the fact that it’s simply going to be nothing more than XP SP3 in a fancy new box with a $200+ price tag.

  6. Vista? That’s the best hey could do? Not impressed.

That video introducing the name was so lame and hokey. Besides, the video quality (wmv) was so awful, you can’t read the text. Who the hell were those 2 dorks on stage?

  7. I wasn’t able to get the video to play on my Dhell Machine at work – a Windows Media Player error message appears telling me of a “Catastrophic Failure” – no joke.

Couldn’t have said it better myself!

MDN – I like your take. Nice job. The couple in the picture does look like they have been abandoned and are looking in the far, far distance for the next MS OS to arrive.

    Peace.

  8. Oh my God…i thought they were going to call it Windows Visa, because you would need to activate it giving a Visa Card in order to get security updates, antivirus stuff, antispyware…….

Well, hasta la vista Longhorn. Wait….”hasta la vista”??. “Hasta nunca”(Until never. Bad translation i know, but you get what i mean) is more appropriate

  9. “… “Windows Vista. It enables a new level of confidence in your PC and in your ability to get the most out of it.”

I have all the confidence in that the code will be hacked within hours of its release. Hackers will indeed be able to get the most out of it.

  10. VISTA:

A pleasing view – esp. from a long narrow opening.

The above is the definition of a VISTA from the Dictionary in Tiger’s Dashboard.

I’ll leave it up to you guys for the jokes!

  11. it’s as if MS marketing thinks that renaming their OS will make everyone forget that it has been overdue for quite some time and place some mindshare distance between “Longhorn” and “Vista”… but no matter what, both names imply a considerable distance between two points and the image (or idea) that the product is a loooong way off.

mebbe we should call it… “LongView”?

MDN Magic Word: first… as in

“Whaddya know… Tempus didn’t get first post. Musta gotta life.”

  12. gotta love how engadget puts it:

Hope you’re as pumped up about the name as these guys, because you’re going to be hearing the name “Windows Vista” A LOT over the next eight years or so.

    well done engadget, well done…

MW ‘far’…the end of ’06 is still far off.

  13. So, over the horizon we can already see the Vista-Viruses, Vista-Worms and Vista-Spies preparing to do their work….

    Game-over already chaps.

Oh, and Gatesy, remember to close the Windows and turn the lights out. Then stick to philanthropy and think what could have been.
