Microsoft ‘Longhorn’ to be named ‘Windows Vista’

Today Microsoft Corp. announced that the official name of its next version of the Windows operating system, formerly code-named “Longhorn,” will be “Windows Vista.” The Windows Vista Beta 1, targeted at developers and IT professionals, will be available by August 3rd 2005.

Microsoft have slapped up a website for “Windows Vista” that claims it’ll be “arriving in 2006” along with promises such as, “Windows Vista. It enables a new level of confidence in your PC and in your ability to get the most out of it. It introduces clear ways to organize and use information the way you want to use it. It seamlessly connects you to information, people, and devices that help you get the most out of life.”

In other words, it’ll still be trying to do everything a Mac has already done for years. Moo (sorry, too ingrained).

Merriam-Webster Online defines “vista” in part as, “a distant view” and “an extensive mental view (as over a stretch of time or a series of events).” Constantly slipping delays and extensive stripping of features?

Why wait for so little?

Instead of waiting for Windows Fresca, uh, Vista, find out more about Apple’s Mac OS X Tiger, the world’s most advanced operating system, here.

  1. The first salvo in the final war to end the computing wars has begun and Microsoft has fired off a round that will soon critically injure Apple.

As the real IT world and web commerce world has known for quite some time, Vista will be the bold OS that finally ushers computing into a new era of security both in private computing and public computing. With each release, the Windows OS shows off its robust and powerful engine and now Vista will finally add the layer of security that will spell the death knell for the obscure and irrelevant Macintosh.

Count the last days of your OS platform. The fully mature Windows OS Vista will be the Moses of computing experiences as Gates leads us to the promised land of full functionality in the 21st century.

  2. I can believe this:

“VIDEO: Watch the name announcement for Windows Vista”

They actually have a major event just to name the product.

I prefer actual product to hype and the looooooooong view!

MDN-MW: ‘rate’ as in since when does naming a project rate a press conferrence?

  3. Marketing realized that “Longhorn” vs. predator cats was a bad combo. And with as much bad press that existings on Longhorn, they don’t want people corrolating Vista with Longhorn. Smart by MS to change the name, even if it is a defensive move.

    My MDN word is Personal

  4. It should be renamed Windows Cliff, because after experiencing the frustration of using it, you’ll want to follow the other windoze sheep right off of a steep one.

  5. So MS decided to give it a name. Sigh. The only impact this breaking news will have is on this here site, where the immature and fantasyless plays on the word Vista will go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on until way past the point where even a 10-year old can’t giggle about the failed attempts at adolescent humor anymore.

  6. Many of us in the “real IT world” have known that the Longhorn project was only a ruse. Vista is going to be the most sophisticated and technologically advanced OS ever.

The new features embedded in the OS will transform the way we interact with our PC’s. The problems and issues that plague modern operating systems like Apple’s OS X will be gone forever. No more viruses, ad-ware or browsers with security issues even junk mail will be a thing of the past. Soon you will have an OS that integrates all aspects of your digital-life into one amazing operating system…

the soon to be released Vista is the future of computing…

  7. it’s been going on a mere 45 minutes. That’s well within adolesent-homor-inspired-derogaotry-moniker-establishing-vetting-process limits. If we go a week without agreeing on a defacto standard I’d agree with you. But give the process time to work itself out naturally.

  8. Vista?

A more accurate name would have been ‘blister’

    ‘blis-ter’ (noun)
1 : an elevation of the epidermis containing watery liquid
2 : an enclosed raised spot (as in paint) resembling a blister
3 : an agent that causes blistering
4 : a disease of plants marked by large swollen patches on the leaves
5 : any of various structures that bulge out (as a gunner’s compartment on a bomber)
    – blis·tery /-t(&-)rE/ adjective

I’d prefer to call it ‘a puss-filled irritation to the skin’ myself…

  9. OMG I think that is the online chat vernacular for Oh My God!

Watch the video – does it look like crap on a pc too?

I know Apple is the master of techno-marketing, but why were all of the people cheering for this announcement; maybe it was taken out of context and I missed something, oh well…

  10. “Vista will be the bold OS that finally ushers computing…”

“Finally”? I thought Windows was the pinnacle of computing all along? And people talk about the Jobs reality distortion field.
