Podcasts coming soon to Motorola’s Apple iTunes mobile phones

“Podcasts are also coming to mobile phones. Motorola is reportedly on the brink of launching an iTunes-enabled phone. The idea is that it will synchronise with iTunes on a Mac or Wintel computer to get songs downloaded to the computer from a CD or from the iTunes Music Store. If Australia ever gets the online music store. But don’t blame Apple. It’s the record companies and their digital rights management worries that are holding things up, we are told,” Garry Barker reports for The Sydney Morning Herald.

“The Motorola phone is not seen as an iPod replacement, since it is likely to have much less memory. Speculation that Apple may get into the mobile phone business has been discounted by the mothership. Downloading music directly from the iTunes Music Store to a mobile phone would not be a user’s first choice, at least not at current call rates. Getting podcasts that way could require a second mortgage,” Barker reports. “Prices will come down but it will be gradual.”

Barker reports, “The popular (and hopeful) view is that the iTunes phone will be a version of the slim clamshell Razr V3. However, the ‘preview’ handset is a Motorola E790, not available in Australia.”
