Report: iTunes 4.9 with podcasting features ahead of schedule, ‘high-profile’ launch by early July

“Apple is trying to leverage the growing Podcasting phenomenon with the next version of its iTunes digital jukebox software and will ship the free software ahead of schedule as part of what sources are describing as a ‘high-profile’ technology launch,” Kasper Jade and Prince McLean report for AppleInsider.

“…Although Apple has branched out into offering video content through iTunes, sources say that iTunes 4.9 will focus on the growing Podcasting phenomenon by offering advanced features for locating, listening, tracking, archiving, and eventually purchasing subscriptions to Podcasts,” Jade and McLean report. “On May 22, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said that iTunes would debut within 60 days of May 22; however, sources tell AppleInsider that iTunes 4.9 is reportedly nearing the final stages of development–about three weeks ahead of schedule. The company now plans to unveil the software at the end of June or by the first week of July.”

  1. “eventually purchasing subscriptions to Podcasts”.

Anyone want to wager when the RIAA is going to start the legal proceedings against Apple for podcasts that play music?

  2. Ahead of schedule seems to be a frequent term coming from Apple these Days. According to what Steve Jobs first said about Tiger, it would be shipped in the first half of ’05. It did and we might even have 10.4.2 within the first half of ’05, but it is debateable about whether they should have waited until .2 to actually ship it. Either way, Apple seems to be doing very well and actually delivering their products on time or early. Kudos to them…..

  3. Queeezie says: “99.9% of all blogs are crap….boring…stupid…”

    I´m sure you meant:
“99.9% of all podcasts are crap….boring…stupid…”

I agree. Lots of mindless people doing mindless things thinking they a pros.

  4. “mr”: Ugh, I think that should be phrased better than that. I don’t want someone else deciding what is “worthy” for me to listen. Still, I guess there has to be some way to separate the wheat from the chaff.

What makes me giggle is how some articles mention how Apple’s competitors will certainly want to “get in” on this. How? What are they going to call these broadcasts? They’re universally known as “podcasts”. Use that term and they give Apple free advertising. Use any other term and the customer won’t know what they’re talking about. It must be giving Glaser and Gorog a stroke!

  5. “Jobs said they would screen out and only feature worthy podcasts.”

Really? If so, all the sudden Apple becomes a content provider, not just a distributor/retailer. That’s a different kettle of fish. They should model the podcast options on iTunes Essentials. Everything under the sun (just about) is available in iTMS but if you don’t want the hassle of sorting through it all, just go with what their experts pick for Essentials. I’d like some way to explore podcasts “in the wild” but also have Apple recommend ones that it thinks are worthwhile.

  6. LordRobin, Apple didn’t creat podcasts…just the name happens to be Apple-like. So when someone says “Apple’s competitors will certainly want to “get in” on this” I think they are talking more about ways to find, sort, and listen to podcasts.

  7. Does anyone with a functioning brain ever post a comment on here?

“pointless first posters”, “trolls”, “general idiocy”

MDN would be 100% better if comments were disallowed altogether.

  8. Impartial Observer…

no, we’re all mouth breathing idiots. we share a brain. not a mouthful of teeth in the room.

if i were you, i’d probably go somewhere else. some of your usual spots… mensa groups… how to be a pompous ass (i assume it’s a site you set up personally)… places like that.

while we are honored that someone of your obvious mental prowess would deem us worthy of your pearls of wisdom, you’re probably just wasting your time.

    thanks

  9. also… not that you need to be told, but the use of “on” in your intro sentence is incorrect.

i hope you saved the receipt on your “functioning brain”.

    groove on

  10. iTunes = Radio on demand…

Last night I spent a long – long time doing a clean re-install … ugg!

After everthing was sad and done … WOW DID I GOT A SUPRISE!

I RELODED MY ITUNES AND WHAT DID I FIND …A “RADIO” TAB!

I open iTunes and found that real live “RADIO” was alive and well.

I’m able to pick radio stations from across the country and hear them through iTunes on Mac …Its like having a big radio station built right into your Mac – and the stations sound much better than on one of the “players” > no names needed!

So here I am down here in Texas …the land of bush (forgive us but if he was your governor – you would send him somewhere else too) and home of right wing nets. So what am I doing …I got KGO AM, the ABC outlet in San Francisco …turned on and the talk is real …WOW!

  11. Apple’s competitors will certainly want to “get in” on this” I think they are talking more about ways to find, sort, and listen to podcasts.

    —–

Yeah, they might want to call it something else.. I’m sure no one likes competing against Kleenex or Bandaid either..

    “Oh, you mean Podcast support”

“Er.. we like to call it ZenStreaming..”

  12. one more thing

…we are talking about stations such as Paficia Radio, NPR outlets and o’yes real done home comerical media stations …now if we can just get the sf giants to podcast …life would be really good!

  13. Screw podcasts, fix the half-a**ed “Radio” first.

The real money maker.. congrats on zeroing in on Apple’s ultimate goal, the Holy Grail of Digital Music.. giving away streaming internet radio..

    Duh Duh DUHH!

“We really think iTunes 4.9 is going to be the straw that breaks the camels back in terms of getting our Internet Radio feature to iTunes users everywhere…While this doesn’t help us sell iPods in any way shape or form, we’ve really been working overtime to give you free radio stations that you can listen to … at your computer.. once again, apple leads the.. digital music.. evolution.. er.. “

That is not ahead of schedule. It’s exactly within the time they said it would be released.
