Apple has released QuickTime 7.0.1 which includes several important bug fixes, a security enhancement, and improved compatibility with Final Cut Studio.
This update is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users and can be downloaded and installed using Software Update or from Apple Downloads.
More info here.
I just updated my Imac 17″ G5 and all is well. Pro version I might ad. Now and then you hear nightmare stories of people installing upgrades (system or application) and all hell braking loose after. I don’t know about the rest of my fellow MDNers but I never have any problems. I always quit all running apps, Do the MacJanitor (or cron scripts), download and install the updates, restart (I know, it’s a mac and we don’t usualy have to restart bu I do. Out of old habbits?). I think the problems come from people running cracks and hacks. My two cents.
MagicWord “account”, I didn’t see it untill after. Fitting though.
Opps. I can’t believe I got the iMac caps wrong. Please forgive.
I wish QT had many more codecs built natively into it without having to download them and bring them in, or to use different players such as MPlayer.
MPlayer is a great player, but why can’t quicktime have that ability to play formats that QT cannot?
QT is a great player, don’t get me wrong, it should just be able to play other codecs.
The quicktime codecs are good, the player is crap though. Iven the pro version lacks basic codec support, and is a user interface disaster. (option-f finally makes quicktime go fullscreen! hurray.)
I wont use quicktime until it supports many more formats than it does. The ability skip forward/backward using the keyboard (arrow keys, a-la MPlayer/VLC) are absolutely necessary. Until then its just taking up space.
I agree, skipping functionality is a must !
And I’d like to set some kind of markers in the timeline to easily find scenes… can’t be that difficult to implement… that would be great…
Magic Word: “friends” like in “Friends don’t let friends use Windows”
So far, so good.
Again, QuickTime gives developers the ability to create their own codecs for use in QuickTime.
Perhaps the better question is not “Why doesn’t QuickTime have more codecs” but is, instead, “Why do developers insist on writing their own players instead of writing QuickTime codecs?”
In case no one caught on, THIS is funny.
—but why can’t quicktime have that ability to play formats that QT cannot?
And why can’t my Mac run programs that my Mac can’t? And why can’t my Rio play music that my Rio can’t???
QuickTime supports recognized standards. If you’re trying to play .MOV files or STANDARD .MP4 files, let me know. If you’re trying to play some kludged version of .AVI, .WMV or anything else… Well, you should either convert it to a standard format or use a PC.
I suspect the missing formats in question are of the DivX variety. Just guessing.
DiVX you say? Ohhh, the “illegal file trading” format. Yeah, I can see why having DVD type controls in a Player app would be great for this kind of thing. If you want a player that can play StarWars.avi and control it like a DVD, you probably won’t ever find those features in QuickTime. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Already been done, it’s called Chapters.

Thanks for the Chapters link !
Looks like the kind of software I was looking for…
no avi’s for you…
you actually can do that… i have a XviD of Thirteen that has chapter controls.
Funny, I can play DIVx movies in QuickTime Player. Hmm, maybe because that’s because I went to the DIVx website and downloaded the software.
MDN Magic Word: “since” as in, since when do people think before they bitch?
I use my scroll wheel to go forward or backward frame by frame with QT 7.
Works better than arrow keys.
Great update to the QuickTime software. It fixed the problem of not being able to export using the QuickTime Player 7.0 version. Now I am very impressed with the ability to export video while playing it at the same time. Wow. In all previous versions of QT exporting hogged the application until it was done.
As for format support in QuickTime, you can very easily download and install new codecs like DiVX etc. The default codecs are much more comprehensive than Windows Media Player and Real 10 offer. Markers have been a part of QT for a long time.
I installed it and my cow died!
