A handful of MacDailyNews readers have emailed us to let us know that they have already received their pre-ordered copies of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Tiger is due to be released on Friday, April 29th.
MDN reader “Michael” writes, “I received my copy of Tiger today! Pre-ordered from MacMall – Woohoo! God bless FedEx!”
MDN reader “Judge Bork” writes, “I’ve got Tiger in my sweaty hands! I’m stuck at work (had it shipped there), but I’ll be ‘feeling ill’ soon to rush home to my Power Mac. There’s no way I’ll make it to the end of the day, fighting this junky Dell and Windows XP while staring at this Tiger box!”
MDN reader “Ed” writes, “Uh, somebody made a mistake and my copy of Tiger arrived today a whole week early! Is it legal for me to install it before the 29th?”
Are you one of the lucky ones who have received your copy of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger? Please let us know and how your install went in our “Reader Feedback” below, thanks.
I was wondering if it would allow you to install any updates yet even though it’s not ‘out’ yet. Someone on an above site mentioned that they couldn’t get any updates. I’m hesitent.
I’ll be getting my copy, according to the exact words on my Order Status on Apple.com – “On or before April 28”.

Chris, there aren’t any updates for Tiger yet
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> I’m not sure if they meant updates for existing applications like iLife and the Pro applications or just referring to OS updates (like the recent Java and Security updates). Most likely the recent system updates either don’t apply to Tiger or are already included. In any case, even if Apple has disabled Software Update for Tiger users until the 29th, that’s only a week away, I think you could wait a week to get your updates if you are in a real hurry to get Tiger installed.
All actual deliveriesseems done only through PC Mall, MacMall and ClubMac, those are all the same organization. Someone there has screwed Steve bigtime…
Got mine today here in germany. The shopman told me not talk about. So, apple must have sent the packages to some shops last week I think.
I got my copy today — installed and now i’m writing to all in tiger. It’s perfect! … BUT… I’m really disapointed!
Heres why:
Spotlight:
Spotlight isn’t that fast if you compare it to Quicksilver. The one plus spotlight has it searching your whole computer, but for an application launcher it sucks!
Dashboard:
Limited, a rip off of konfabulator and Panics Stattoo. (Seems that apple really likes what panic does *remember audion “http://www.panic.com/extras/audionstory/”)In fact the UI resembles Stattoo so much its almost scary and disappointing.
These are the two must talked about features in my opinion so if you buy all the marketing hype (which we all will) tiger is worth it. If you’re skeptical and or short on cash stick with panther and install Quicksilver and Stattoo and you won’t feel that left out.
The plus side of panther:
I have noticed a speed increase after installing on my 17″ laptop. (which is a plus) and the minor updates on apps like mail, ical, safari are a major plus. Safari is defiantly faster but lacks the features, power and flexibility firefox offers but on the note of speed firefox seems to be effect positively from the system speed increase. Spot light is great when your looking for that barred text file or email message so I’m giving a thumbs to spotlight on that fact.
Ether way we’re all caught in the “Must have what apple sales trap” so cough up the bucks and enjoy.
Been using Tiger for 3 days now .. love it ..
“Spotlight isn’t that fast if you compare it to Quicksilver. “
Ive found it takes 2 days of use before the indexing becomes instant
Everything else is awesome
Why do I never get this lucky?
Oh well, I guess I will just have to wait…
Seems like Apple needs to come out with a definitive statement about the indexing in Spotlight on the 29th. Otherwise, there’s gonna be this huge wave of disapointment. Then you’ll have all the usual Apple trolls coming out of the woodwork. Better to come out before and explain a bit better, than have first impressions kill.
‘Tiger’ 10.4! I’m working on ‘Pussy’ 10.5!! It’s tasty!!
NO TIGER GM FOR DEVELOPERS YET!
It is interesting to see that Tiger is being shipped already to the general public and will be available to them on April 29th, but ADC Select and Premium Members have to wait several days (a week or more if you are overseas as I am) even after the release on April 29th before we will get our Tiger GM copy! We are stuck with Build 8A425!
Something stinks here!

Tiger installs well, has data transfer build in, can not update. iLife
installs (not included) and IS able to update.
iSync works with the newer phones (SE V800 and Moto V620 tested and works)
Update works, clean install works too.
Office 2004 works, updates too
iApps work (Mail 2 will not import mail 1, mmm)
Graphic converter 5.5 and 5.6 work
Toast 6.0.7 works
Acquisition works
PDFPEN 2.1 works
MS RDC works
Apple rd does not work! Shame!
All new things works (but he)
Spotlight works like charm and will become the way to search
Frinday 29 the updates will be available and needed.
Finder is repaired, unresponsiveness can now be overcome. If Finder hangs
on a file’s properties, it now is able to leave it and does not hang.
Looks have changed a tiny bit, not as much as Jag->Panther
Are there any significant updates to Sherlock? Why is sherlock always overlooked?
Also, what about Safari RSS? What about Dashboard?
Safari RSS seems faster on almost all page loading… javascript is *FAR* faster, thank god. I dig the RSS capabilities, but I’ll have to play with it for a while before I can really judge.
Mail 2.0 is TOTALLY grown up from 1.3.x – this is much more polished looking. I’ll reserve judgement until Monday when I get to the office to see if it supports proxies yet – using Entourage v.X makes me sad.
No water ripple effect using Dashboard on my 12″ PB 867… so I guess I officially need a new computer, according to Apple. *sigh*
More to come…
Tiger rocks! It’s extremely faster on the same machine over Panther. Everything and I mean everything is faster. What’s even more amazing is that my favorite download manager, Speed Download 3.0.6 RIPS through Tiger, freakin awesome speed!!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you !
Received my order of Tiger last Thursday. Got a call from MacMall on Friday asking me to send it back at their expense. This version is not necessarily “complete.” Will re-ship it on the 29th and to make up for the inconvenience they are sending a free copy of iLife.
Anyone else have this experience?
I had Tiger installed a week ago – don’t ask how.
All seemed great except for the following:
I have a license for QT 6 Pro, but when Tiger installs it wipes it out and installs QT 7 – and effectively wipes out Pro funcitonality. And no, you can’t just enter you old registration info.
So i got a hold of the .app from another machine an successfuly launched QT 6.5. But as far as the Safari pulgin-i can’t seem to be able to raplace it too. I managed to take out the plug-in. but if you download QT6 from apple, the installer won’t allow to proceed because it detects a “newer” version of QT. So now i need to lean how to remove QT7 altogether. Frankly i don’t care how much better a new app may be. I don’t think they have the right to remove a paid-for upgrade and set you back with their shiny new one.
I ve had Tiger two days and most applications work ok. But if you use bit torrernt find something else, it wont work with Tiger. Same thing goes for ShapeShifter, Candybar, QT 6 Pro. Also my copy of Graphic Converted needs to be re-registered.
In my opinion too much hassle for seemingly minor improvents and major hype.
