  1. I’m assuming that maybe some people are having problems with Safari.

I had AcidSearch and Pith Helmet installed (thanks MDN) and it caused some problems.

Here’s my solution: Delete the following folder: Library>Application Support>SIMBL

That worked for me. Good luck.

  2. The update went well. The only thing I noticed was that it made pithhelmet stop working (though it was kind enough to inform me of this). Hope pith gets updated soon, I’m not used to these ads.

  3. “Here’s my solution: Delete the following folder: Library>Application Support>SIMBL”

Thanks gary. I was wondering what my problem was. I resorted to grabbing a copy of Safari from an unupdated machine.

With your suggestion I was able to put the new Safari back and it works fine now.

    thx…

  4. I’m running it. No problems so far. iMac 17″ 1.6 G5, 512 Meg Ram, Combo Drive, External DVD RW DL. Gota love being a mac user. Can’t wait for tiger. PS I was running this before the post.

  5. “Safari 1.3 has no “download linked file as” option in the contextual menu! WTF!!! I got so used to using that!”

twdldee, if you press and hold the option key, “Download Linked File” becomes “Download Linked File As…” in the Safari context menu.

    Hope that helps.

  6. I can confirm that Safari 1.3 does indeed seem to block the annoying MacDailyNews pop-under ads (that no other site I visit seem to employ). Thank you Apple!

I guess MDN will have to put a couple more banner ads on their web site to recover the lost revenues from popunders that Mac users won’t be seeing anymore, thankfully.

  7. Andy C,

Thanks for that contextual menu tip. I keep forgetting that pressing the option key can do some interesting things.

But anyway, it’s nice to not have the pop-unders anymore. Pages I visit that rendered horribly seem to render better now.

So far, so good on the update. None of my tweaks seem to be broken.

  8. “Also finally got a downloading speed teller thingee…thing (tells you how fast you are downloading the file) in the download manager!”

It’s been there all the time. In the download window, alt click on the “download speed”, and it changes to “time remaining”, and vice versa.

  9. Although I use Firefox, I’ve never gotten pop unders on my Mac from this site or any other but I’ve read that others do. About the only setting I’d have different is I have cookies off. Anyone else experience that?

  10. Safari Fastest Browser on Java

This browser java speed test site: http://www.24fun.com/downloadcenter/benchjs/benchjs.html

tests your browser’s performance with java. When I tested Safari 1.2 I got a disappointing 70 seconds to run through all tests. With 1.3, that time dropped to 9.8 seconds. That’s one heck of an improvement. And listed below are the top 10 speed demons on this test. Note the presence of Safari, starting at #1.

  13. My normal routine for all OS X upgrades is…

    – Disconnect all external hard drives. <– STRONGLY advised by Apple
    – Repair Permissions (Disk Utility) to insure updater as full access to all files.
    – Download and run COMBO updater from Apple OS X download site.
    – Reconnect external hard drives.
    – Repair Permissions again (on all drives) to align files with new permission settings.

Perhaps it’s overkill, but at least I know that my system is as healthy as it can be.
