Faster Apple Power Mac Quad G5s coming? IBM posts information on dual 64-bit core PowerPC970MP

“IBM has posted an application note in direct reference to a dual 64-bit core PowerPC970MP and how to use thermal diodes in the chip. This is the first known reference to a dual-core chip to be made by IBM in regards to the PowerPC 970 (otherwise known as Apple’s G5 Processor). The article and reference gives credence to the recent rumors of UI changes to the Apple CHUD Developer tools, and MONster.app showing support for 4 processors,” Mudbug writes for MacRumors.com.

Full article with link to the IBM document here.

Last week, a MacRumors Page 2 article reported that the most recent Apple CHUD Developer tools had made minor UI changes allowing for the possibility of upcoming Quad processor Macs. More evidence pointing specifically to Quad processor support was also noted in the MONster.app that showed checkboxes for 4 CPUs and internal references to a processor called the PPC 970MP. See related articles below for more information and links.

Everything Apple has screenshots of Apple’s newest CHUD 4.1.0 toolset that includes the latest MONster.app. This updated version includes clues for a new Apple Quad G5 Power Mac, which would utilize two dual-core 970MP chips.

  1. can you IMAGINE how disgustingly fast 4 G5’s running at 2.5 -3 Ghz would be???

monster video editing is coming to the masses soon. And by that I meanshit happening instantly in front of you. Sweet!

  2. And with them, I hope they utterly smoke any Wintel box known to man.
I’d love to see an Oracle or IBM database take some TPC crowns on Apple hardware.

    Not for business, my ass.

  3. Scha-WING!!!

I will be oh-so-in-line for one of these beasts . . . if it ever materializes! My only fear would be that the price point would end up being set too high, as is customary for Apple on the high-end Powermacs.

But, SUPER SCHWING! I’ll still have to have one.

  4. Based on what went down at the Intel Developer Forum I would guess that the dual core chips wouuld be clocked lower than the current G5s, probably at 2Ghz. This would still give plenty of power especially in multithreaded applications.

  5. IBM talks big….but where is the product???
Sure these guys plan and dream of things (like the 3Ghz Power Mac that was supposed to be here 2 years ago), but do they ever get to fruition?

When it is ready to buy then I will believe it.

Chalk this news report up to blue sky dreaming and rumors dept.

  6. I just knew it, I just knew it! dual-dual-core ina PowerBook. I just knew it! Or maybe not. What about the dual-core G4? That’s what’ll be in the PowerBook.

    And what about CELL?

I think we should be told.

  7. And the Wintel crowd will STILL see Macs as having “just” a 2.5 Ghz CPU, and as a result they’ll continue to buy the bug-filled, virus-prone, hotter-than-your-toaster, Dell.

P.S. Congrats to the wisdom of California judges!

Actually, the 3 GHz Power Mac was supposed to be here nine months ago. The G5 wasn’t even official two years ago. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”rolleyes” style=”border:0;” />

If this chip comes out soon (and if they can can clock it higher than 3 GHz) I think this will mostly make up for the delay. If it beats Intel and AMD to the Dual-Core market, well that’s just gravy.

    Cross your fingers for NAB.

  9. Steve doesn’t like looking foolish(3ghz announcement), so what better way to more than make up for it than to announce a quad processor 3ghz??? Yes, maybe I’m dreaming, but Daystar Digital right up the road here had quads in their clone and had a 9500 quad upgrade(whether the OS truly supported it or not) about the time Steve re-arrived.

BTW, these MDN Magic Word’s are getting longer and longer.

Don´t own a Dell, but my XP peecees run fine – just like my Macs.

    Ignorance is bliss.

I look forward to buying this dual quad Mac…which means I have to wait even longer for the next PowerMac.

Oh, that makes it better. And still not in sight. Not a peep or rumor, nothing.

  11. Why is it so common for Apple fans to despise everything and everyone non-Apple? Or is it that the more closed-minded of Mac fans are more vocal?

    Thanks!

I, too, own and use a mix of Apple products and XP boxes. They both work fine for me as well.

    >I look forward to buying this dual quad Mac…which means I have to wait even longer for the next PowerMac.

    Same here.

The latest releases have been pretty much so-so. For me, nothing exciting enough to make me buy again.

A PM-MP/C G5 will excite the market in a big way.

I hope Apple prices it nicely and keeps the distribution channels flowing. And I hope it goes on sale very soon.

  13. I’m an only PC user (until I can save enough/powerbooks get their next upgrade), and my experiences have been pathetic. Constant malware problems and a taxing operating system that’s absolutely moronic. I’m writing on my 450mhz PC (Win98) because my 3ghz (XP) is actually slower at basic tasks due to the operating system.

With intensive care and the constant purchase of new machines the Wintel experience might equal Apple’s, but I’ve got 3 year old iMacs that run circles around PC’s on OSX.

Jesus, my laptop can’t come soon enough!

  15. All,

If Apple releases such a machine, they’ll lose market share in Video, Audio, Graphics and Scientific circles. They will run slower than Commodore 64s and will give you herpes.

The world will end if Steve Jobs doesn’t lose both Apple and Pixar in the next five years.

I predice Carly Fiorina will take over Apple, form an alliance with Dell to sell their jukeboxes and incorporate WMP and Napster into their product line.

They’ll close down all PowerPC production and start selling PCs running Longshot, er Longhorn on Cell processors.

And Frank Zappa and Pat Robertson will write a series of books on how the world will end. The title will be “Left My Behind.”

  16. >I’m an only PC user (until I can save enough/powerbooks get their next upgrade), and my experiences have been pathetic.

Sorry to hear that. My experiences have been exactly the opposite. I’ve used Windows since 3.1/3.11. I’ve used Apple since the ][e.

Both get the job done for me, although both have their problems.

Anyway, I’m in the same boat… saving up for a nice new Mac.
