Tech writer Fasoldt: Apple’s Mac mini includes ‘outstanding, superb’ software

Al Fasoldt is back from his battle with cancer of the prostate [Great news: Al reports that two tests since the surgery showed no signs of recurring cancer] and takes a look at Apple’s new Mac mini.

“The Mac mini is a full Macintosh G4 computer – sold without a monitor, keyboard or mouse – despite being the size of a stack of three CD boxes. The entire computer is 6.6 inches square and 2 inches high. Everything a normal G4 Macintosh has is in the Mac mini also,” Fasoldt writes for The Syracuse Post-Standard.

“The mini comes with OS X (pronounced ten – it’s a Roman numeral) as its operating system, just as all other Macintosh models do. It’s more advanced than the current version of Windows, and, as OS X users know well, is unaffected by Windows viruses and spyware. So far, it doesn’t even have any viruses or spyware of its own,” Fasoldt writes.

“Apple’s superb iLife suite of photo, audio and video programs comes with the Mac mini. The best software in the suite surely must be iPhoto and iTunes; each of them qualifies as the best example of good program design in its own category. You also get iMovie, which makes video editing painless and fun while keeping it as professional as possible; and iDVD, which works with iMovie to give you a way to make DVDs of your videos without opening a manual or looking in a help menu… You also get GarageBand, an outstanding audio-recording and editing program. If GarageBand were sold on its own by a company other than Apple, it probably would cost $299 – more than half the cost of the entire Mac mini with all the software included,” Fasoldt writes.

Fasoldt writes, “Apple figures most people buying a Mac mini will have a Windows PC around the house and probably won’t want to use the Windows computer after they’ve tried the mini. (I agree.)”

    LMFAO…

I had Windows (Virtual PC) on my Mac for about a week.. I wanted to play around with it.. thought maybe I would need it..

God.. using Windows as your main PC.. it just feels like it was put together by amateurs.. I know I know.. I use Windows often.. but I’d never had it as my main computer.. organizing my own files etc.

There really is no sane reason why anyone would do that to themselves.. I was very very unimpressed and, frankly, found no use for it.

Video Games? Uh, okay, I’ll get back to you on that one…

I realize playing video games is very important to a lot of people, young and old, … but even that… is it really worth enduring such a cheap OS (there, I said it)?

  2. Hey The Sub standard is read by hundreds of thousands since it’s the primary paper for the North Country as well.

I call it the Sub Standard as you can find simple spelling and editorial mistakes on 1/4 of the pages.

North Country = Basically everything north of Syracuse. Different editions are put out for that area.

  3. Johnny,

I live 15 mile noth of Manhattan. Everyone in manhattan or Long Island refers to where I am as “upstate NY”.

I guess where you are is “Far North Country”?

  4. Duncan,

What kind of bozo are you? Of couse OS X is more advance than the current version of Windows. And it’s more than a year old! Just wait utnil Tiger. What this writer was thinking is: “When Tiger is released, I’ll write “more advanced than the NEXT version of Windows. 😀

  5. For those who probably never truly experienced and had windows in their home honestly can’t judge it.Mac OS X is definitley more advanced than windows, but not too much.I think what he said in that little part that the first post had to bring in was right.I honestly think the Mac is amazing, but windows holds its own too.

  6. Anyone who has come to Mac OS from the Windows world needs to buy themselves a book on the Mac OS and READ IT – otherwise they’re not getting the whole experience.

Windows – it’s like sticking your head in a bucket of water.

  7. I know I’m not apart of any “world”, and like I said, windows is not horrible. If it was, everyone would have gotten a mac,and apple wouldn’t care about diehard fans because they have to keep up with demand for new customers. What you guys get from the PC “world” is totally different in my head.My pc hardly ever crashes,I usually keep it on all the time, and I don’t need to go to certain stores to get the spyware I want.I actually never have had any viruses.I definitely want a mac because of what I do and want to do,like theming, terragen, and work with all of iLife.I also want to know that I have something that I will make people wonder why they still have a windows computer, because I think I would make peoples mouth drop when they see what a mac can do.
