“In a research note released to clients on Wednesday, Merrill Lynch analyst, Steve Milunovich, said his firm expects Apple to ship 1 million shuffles and about 3 million iPods this quarter, for a total of 4 million units,” AppleInsider reports.
“Updating the iPod mini should help iPod units decline only 35% sequentially from 4.6 million to 3 million,” the analyst said. According to AppleInsider’s report, “Milunovich also voiced his belief that the 60GB iPod photo price was slashed by 25%, due to less than spectacular demand since its October debut.”

Well, duh.
Who would have thunk it? A $600 iPod not selling well. The new 30GB price point is pretty sweet if you ask me, but I still see no compelling reason to upgrade from my 3rd gen 15GB iPod – especially now that I have an iPod shuffle, too.
BSOD – I’m in the same position as you – except that I’ve run out of space on my 15 gigger. Maybe I’ll upgrade within the year – those color screens are sweet to look at plus the click wheel is easier to use.
I’m thinking Apple are going to sell up to 2 million ipod shuffles. They must have had plenty of those in stock before they released the product. I think the reason for a short supply is that they sold them all and cannot keep up with the continued demand.
So I’m think 5-6 million ipods all told. That’s about 1.2 billion in revenue assuming $ 200 per unit. Maybe $150 buck per unit makes more sense?
Thurrott whinees that the iPOd mini color screen never happened..
I don’t want photos on my mini, or a battery-life killing color screen.
why? because I put in on random and stick it in my pocket, that’s why.. but I didn’t get the shuffle cuz i like having all my favorite songs, and I like changing playlists dep. on my mood.
just because iriver or whatever has a photo feature on the 5 gig model, doesn’t mean it’s the status quo.. it’s not the status quo until apple does something (when it comes to digital music)..
huh.. kinda like the way that sounds
