Apple Computer’s Xserve and Mac OS X make waves in supercomputing field

“Apple has carved out a niche on the desktop, and has a loyal following in graphics design, video editing, and other similar technical fields. More recently, it has stormed the world with the iPod. But few think of the company as a player in the supercomputing field. Yet that is exactly where its Xserve G5 line of servers is making waves,” Drew Robb writes for ServerWatch.

“Case in point: the Hypersonic Missile Technology (HMT) team at Huntsville, Alabama based COLSA Corp. has adopted a supercomputing platform consisting of 1,566 of the 64-bit, dual-processor Apple Xserve G5 servers for its MACH5 (Multiple Advanced Computers for Hypersonics) cluster. This gives the company 60 times more computational power than its current production machine. Result: It can now do calculations in one day that previously took two months,” Robb writes.

No, actually Apple’s Marketing hasn’t fooled me in any way (I could argue that they’re not really marketing the G5 much right now at all, but the point is moot). My opinion of the G5 comes from using one (try it sometime – helps to give you an informed opinion instead of proving your ignorance) and watching as a Dual 1.8ghz G5 smoked a Dell dual 3.2ghz Xeon encoding video with Avid Express DV.

Keep swimming in the sea of mediocrity. i won’t miss you a bit.

  2. “try it sometime – helps to give you an informed opinion instead of proving your ignorance”

I do use one, and it hasn’t made me “Switch”.

“Oh, and I might add, the dual 3.2ghz Xeon box cost TWICE as much as the dual 1.8ghz G5.”

Dont be like apple and compare a 32 bit peon box to an Mac…It Doesn’t work.

    Dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5
    2 GB SDDDR Mem
    v10.3.6

The problem is I do use Macs, I have to at my job..I just dont see what all the hype is about…Sure you dont get viruses etc.. But I havent had a Virus or anything resembling one since 95…

  3. I would rather be using my 400Mhz Cube than that FX anyday. Know Why? Ill tell you with a short story. Sitting here, working along, a friend of a co-working comes in and they start to chat. The friend start to tell my co-worker about the SPYWARE they got that cut their computer performance on all their office machines to nothing, As well as some machines getting turned into a SPAM zombies.

Do you get it yet? AMD, Intel are nothing without MS, The leading RECIEVER of that crud. Whereas I sit here without worrying about what e-mail I get, and knowing if something tries to install, I can “Just Say No”

And I sorry that the only thing you can brag about is the chip in the machine and your DOOM FPS, not the work you can get done with it.

  4. “Dont be like apple and compare a 32 bit peon box to an Mac…It Doesn’t work.”

At the time that was supposedly the fastest chip made on the PC side (although I know that the argument between AMD and Intel is as furious as the Mac vs PC argument – I can’t say for sure, I’ve never used a box with an AMD chip).

“Sure you dont get viruses etc.. But I havent had a Virus or anything resembling one since 95…”

OK, so you know enough to be able to keep your system free of viruses. How much time do you spend keeping it that way? How much money do you spend on anti-virus software?

“The problem is I do use Macs, I have to at my job..I just dont see what all the hype is about…”

What do you do for a living? I’m guessing it’s nothing in the creative field because no creative person could compare Mac OS X to any flavor of Windows and say “I don’t know what the fuss is all about.”

Buffy nailed it. You can go back and forth comparing any hardware configuration of a PC box to any hardware configuration of a Mac and nitpick about which is faster but it doesn’t matter because the bottom line is, the PC isn’t running Mac OS X.

  5. One thing I just noticed on the link NoMacForYou provided – the G5 was substantially slower than the Alienware on the Premiere 6.0 test. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only version of Premiere to run natively on OS X was 6.5, so that test was performed with Premiere running in Classic. Therefore, the results are meaningless for that test anyway.

  6. NoMacForYou,

Boy, are you a bozo. You pretend to bring up information that proves Macs aren’t as good or as fast. And yet, when you talk to people who know what they’re talking about out there – Virginia Tech, the US Army, Salk Insitute, etc. and they’ll tell you they buy Macs becuase they have a much greated bang-for-the-buck.

You’re the pathetic loser hanging out here trying to win an arugment that was a little more valid five years ago.

  7. NoMacForYou,

The guys at PC World obviously don’t know $hit from Shinola. First, they quoted the price of the single-processor 1.8GHz G5 as $2,999. It’s $1,499, so they’re off by a factor of two. Wonder if they’re as accurate with their tests. Second, they said Jaguar is the current OS and that Panther would be released later this year. Pathetic. This is your source for late-breaking Mac news? No wonder you’re so out of touch.

Oh, and the Aurora? – looks like a demented 12-year-old’s wet dream – tacky and grotesque.

  8. What is it with these Mac-haters who lurk on Mac sites? Do they seriously think they’re going to convince anyone here to switch to Wintel? Especially with lies and FUD? What exactly is the nature of their malfunction?

  9. Viridian- they are tired of fighting virii so they come here to try and rile us up! i mean after 12 hours of cleaning everyday with file defrag-, adware, spyware, AVG-free antivirus and e.t.c. I think we should give em a lil break. let them dream a wil’ bit and sing the praises of OS X & the Machintosh by wasting their time tryin to convince us. I mean they are almost as loyal to us as we are to Apple. what more could we ask for??

  10. I promise that I can skew any computer with any OS to make the results go my way. Panther has been out for how long now…why were they using Jaguar? Would PC World ever show results that show that the Mac is much better? Never. That is just like any IT person shooting themself and their job in the foot saying that any network they are working with needs a Mac. The business of fixing Win$in is equal to or greater than the business of selling Win$in. That is what keeps everything running full circle.

  11. I’ll pay attention to that PC Mag article when they perform the same tests with Tiger…

… that is, if it doesn’t take them 2 years to get around to it.

BTW, don’t forget that PC Mag rated the G5 iMac as 5 out of 5.
