“Shares of Apple Computer Inc. rose 4.9 percent on Monday after some analysts said they expected the company to introduce a smaller, cheaper iPod digital music player in January that would boost profits… Some analysts and Apple rumor sites expect the company in January to expand into the lower end of the digital music market with iPods that hold songs on flash memory microchips rather than roomier but more expensive hard drives,” Reuters reports. “Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff expected the new players to cost $150 to $200, compared with $249 for the iPod mini, currently the cheapest model.”
“An Apple spokesman said the company does not comment on rumors and speculation. Chief Executive Steve Jobs often introduces new products during the company’s MacWorld convention, the next of which is in January… Apple rose $3.10, or 4.95 percent, to close at $65.78 on Nasdaq. The stock has more than tripled in value this year, largely on the success of the iPod,” Reuters reports. “Apple sold more than 2 million iPods in its fiscal fourth quarter ended in September. For the March quarter, Neff expects total iPod sales of 3.9 million units and flash-based iPod sales of 1.5 million units.”

These analysts are simply repeating speculation that has been published by OTHER analysts in the past few weeks. They have no inside information and are really just stealing this info from others. Duh.
I hate when these analysts speculate on what Apple may or may not do because they’re usually a clueless bunch, but they really can affect the market. If Apple doesn’t come out with a Flash based iPod is the stock going to take a dive? I was planning to buy some but I may wait until after MacWorld now.
