Awaiting debut of Apple’s Canadian iTunes Music Store

“Apple Computer Inc.’s hugely successful iTunes music downloading system is about to launch in Canada, establishing a powerful competitor to the Internet-based music services already in place in this country,” Richard Blackwell reports for The Globe and Mail. “Apple’s iTunes on-line music store, already up and running for customers in the United States and Europe, is expected to be open for Canadian audiophiles in the next few days. In October, Apple said it would launch in Canada in November, and a company spokesman said [last] week the company intends to meet that deadline.”

MacDailyNews Take: Today was originally our best guess, since the Friday after Thanksgiving wouldn’t have given Apple much U.S. media bang for the non-buck. As we explained, media coverage in the U.S. is important, as even the news of iTMS for Canada would generate much U.S. press – helping iTMS and iPod sales there, too. Anticipation for the debut happening tomorrow grows with each minute that passes with silence from Apple’s PR machine. Tomorrow is a distinct possibility since it’s the last day of November and could coincide with New Music Tuesdays.

  1. “Guys, when Americans pick on Canadian musicians, just mention:
    Britney Spears
    Christina Aguilera
    Justin Timberlake
    That usually shuts them up.”

That reminds me of what I say to Torontonians when they claim to be the ‘cultural’ capital of Canada. I point out that the first time SkyDome was filled to capacity was for “Wrestlemania”. That shuts them up in a split second.

  2. the first thing im going to buy is exclusive tracks recorded at aol. I hope they have a wide variety of indie music from canada. The audiobooks will be great to, that way i wont have to read!

  3. Hey hoser, what ever happened to Daniel Lanois? He produced alot of that preppy-rock stuff, but he is amazing at it. His own stuff is slit-wrist depressing, but it’s great for when I drink myself into that wallowing self-pity party, and think about good times gone. Everybody needs one of those artists, so we can can get shit-faced alone in a candle-lit room and remember friends we left behind, and dreams we will probably abandon.

    Whoa.

  4. Gee what’s with all the insecure comments from the USA part of North America … afraid that Canada actually has a live culture rather than the pasteurised version in the ewe-ess-awf-ehhh?

  5. Sloan utterly rock. Between the Bridges, Navy Blues and Pretty Together are fantastic albums and are a must for anyone who likes good songwriting in a rock/power pop stylee.

  6. My first itunes purchase will be the enitire Nathan album Jimson Weed. Nathan is a super cool Canadian band from Winnipeg. Don’t lie in bed listless at night wondering what ever happened to good music. Fantastic music is alive and well in Canada!

  7. It’s all very well that the tax on blank media here in Canada is supposed to help recording artists, but the last I heard, the artists hadn’t received a single dollar. In effect, it’s just another tax, and it goes right where all our other taxes go . . . right down the big oubliette labelled OTTAWA.

Meanwhile, those of us who burn CDs to back up OUR OWN data, stuff that we either legally bought and paid for or MADE OURSELVES, get screwed by paying a fine for other people’s crimes. (Remember, p2p copying isn’t necessarily legal here — the law was written by lawyers who knew nothing about how it works, and nobody has ever figured out just how it applies in practice. The recording industry still claims that it’s illegal.)

Can this make any less sense? Sure it can. Scuttlebutt saith that one reason for the looooong delay in iTMS Canada was that until recently, it was illegal for a foreign-owned corporation to operate that kind of service in Canada. In theory, foreigners aren’t allowed to own TV stations, radio stations, cable companies, newspapers, bookshops, or movie distributors in Canada. (In practice, of course, there are workarounds . . . if you have good lawyers and know who to bribe.) MTV Canada was granted a broadcasting licence on the condition that their programming format not be based on music videos. Could Apple have got a licence for iTMS that requires them not to sell music downloads?

  8. “My, our Canadian friends do get their noses out of joint when we pick on them…”

What the hell did you expect?

Mentioning B-list artists like the Barenaked Ladies and Rita McNeil is a joke.. were it not for the distinct possibility that someone, somewhere, south, thinks that is what Canadians listen to.

You can’t even use Britney as an example of crude American culture.. CANADIANS LISTEN TO THAT CRAP TOO! We all watch the same TV shows and listen to the same music..

I’m not saying that’s ALL Canadians listen to… but there are 11 year old girls all over the world who will listen to Britney, rest assured..

  9. Onjce again the comments of a few ignorant, arrogant YANKS gives the rest of the country a bad name. It helps explain why so many people outside the USA (unjustifiably) loathe the entire country.

  10. Well, it’s already 3 PM Eastern on Tuesday, November 30 and no announcement yet about iTMS for Canada or anywhere else. MOSR reported a few days ago that a problem with the music rights licensing organisation in Canada was holding things up again. MOSR said, not until January 1.

  11. “Onjce again the comments of a few ignorant, arrogant YANKS gives the rest of the country a bad name. It helps explain why so many people outside the USA (unjustifiably) loathe the entire country.”

Oh yeah, sure…and nobody outside of the U.S. ever makes any ignorant and/or arrogant statements about Americans though right? LOL Give me a break.

  12. Well, its December 1 and still no itunes for Canada. I really can’t wait any more. Today I went on to itunes usa and started to listen to songs and put them in a playlist of songs I want to buy. Although because they are dragging the butts again, I am downloading a few of them off Aquisition just to make myself feel a little better.

I realized the reasons why I really want iTunes store up and going. It is a lot easier, more reliable, etc. I am so sick of choosing a song I want and then I can’t find it on Aquisition.

This next comment goes to the record companies. In the past 10 years I have spent very little on buying music. Can’t stand to buy a whole album when all I want is one or two songs. I can now see myself buying at least 200 songs a year. So which scenario is better for them. Why have they waited so long. Any answers to this by anyone?
