“The soon-to-be-announced, re-designed iMac will be available in two 17-inch models with a 1.6GHz G5 processor and two 20-inch models with a 1.8GHz G5 processor, reliable sources have told Think Secret. In addition, the new models will be housed in an all-in-one body with the motherboard and components attached to the back of the display,” Think Secret reports. “Sources told Think Secret that the new iMac design is ‘impressive” and ‘an eye catcher.’ The new unit will not have a display with adjustable neck as found on the current iMacs, but will feature an all-in-one design with the logic board, optical drive and other components housed on the back of the flat-panel display.”

“new iMac design is ‘impressive” and ‘an eye catcher.”
Shocking news…
I really hope these rumors are wrong. Why on Earth would Apple take a major step *backwards* in design and remove the adjustable monitor from the iMac line? Unless they’ve got some new innovation up their sleeve, this just sounds like a bad idea.
the only way to get a 1.8ghz processor is with a 20″ screen? that blows, and the vid card blows along with it
apple is so hard headed sometimes….one button mouse anyone? headless iMac anyone?
I don’t think it entirely adds up. Why would they have 2 separate 20-inch models that spec out exactly the same with the exception of a larger HDD? That could easily be an option when ordering, it doesn’t justify the presence of a entirely different model designation.
And it starts all over again.
I find one thing odd with these specifications: the low-end education model is supposed to us an IDE hard drive while the other iMacs use Serial ATA. I do not think this will happen because the motherboards would have to be different.
this is think secret and the rumors are true. Please keep your whining to a minimum until you see the damn things.
OOOH, I smell bacon!
Do you smell bacon?
I sure hope the new imac doesn’t look like the Sony Vaio. That thing looks clunky as hell. I agree the tilt/swivel arm of the current iMac is just about the best ergonomic design possible. If I need to move the display out of the way to increase desk space, I just gently swivel the iMac screen to one side. With the Vaio setup, I have to move the whole damn thing with wires dangling out the back.
Very disappointing if true.
Think Secret is generally reliable when they state things as strongly as they are doing here. But, I also agree that removing an arm for an adjustable monitor sounds terrible. I only hope that there is some other built-in adjuster for it.
while waiting for the new imac – my wife and my neighbor talked me into a G5 with a 20″ monitor…which is what I’m typing on. Of course, I’m now 4 large in the hole as opposed to 2…but the other 2 was well worth it.
If – big IF – the iMac is a 20″ that resembles the new flat panels in anyway – even with the hardware attached to the back of the monitor, I can say all the doubters will rejoice – it really is a piece of work.
The prices sound a bit on the high side and the video cards on the weak side, but I’ll reserve judgment until we actually see them and get the real prices…
I agree we should wait and see if the rumors are true, but if they are:
Why can’t Apple get a clue that if they are going to lock you into an expensive LCD display, then you better bring along the best “guts” possible. Cutting edge video card, fast processor, ample RAM, and at least a wee bit of expandability options.
The current design of the iMac did not hold back sales. It was a beautiful LCD display locked into yesterday’s technology at a less than dazzling price. Just not competitive for a prosumer model. Let the eMac be the consumer machine. An iMac needs to get the gamers at least a little interested, or it will be a failure.
I wouldn’t be surprised if TS have got this wrong. I thought Jobs had rubbished the idea of this form factor anyway. It smacks of this:

I’ve got to buy one. Even if eat looks like a tortilla. Which it might. The idea doesn’t blow me away, though I hope Jonathan has come up with the goods.
“Why on Earth would Apple take a major step *backwards* in design and remove the adjustable monitor from the iMac line?”
I thought much the same thing when that great tilt and swivel Performa design was replaced by the non-adjustable Bondi iMac. And it had no floppy, the mouse was round, the keyboard was small… A real step backwards.
Thanks for the link jackson. LOL.
The price point seems kind of high… The only thing I think might be cool is if the iMac screen unclipped from the base and became a tablet you would carry around the house — watching streaming movies, audio, etc. Web browsing would need a touch-screen… I could see this happening, given the rumors over the past couple years.
And of course, Apple should buy Tivo, incorporate the software, and bring that company into its new consumer product arsenal, right?
Hasn’t anyone noticed that each subsequent iMac redesign is getting more and more expensive?
Them there’s nice healthy profit margins.
And what’s this 256Mb crapola? C’mon Apple – stick 512Mb in! Sheesh, we’re paying top dollar for the thing anyway.
I hope the memory situation is a rumour which is untrue.
yeah those speeds sound about right.. its NOT a power mac ..
i want a headless imac that’s compatible with all screens (dvi) like samsung or toshiba
with the emac at 800.. these things should be around 1100 US
Why would they have 2 separate 20-inch models that spec out exactly the same with the exception of a larger HDD?
Yeah, that doesn’t make sense. A larger hard drive would be a BTO upgrade, not the only differentiator between models.
A new case design – great! A new G5 processor – wonderful! A new price point? – no!
IF these specs are right (which I hope they all aren’t), I’m hardly surprised. The lack of flexibility in the new line up is exactly why Apple are getting creamed in the consumer space with desktops.
I can’t believe that everyone is treating this as true. There is simply no reason to believe it.
Maybe you’re new around here, jackson? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
The “rumors as truth” reactions are tediously predictable.
