Windows XP SP 2 firewall flags Apple’s iTunes

After “upgrading” to Windows XP Service Pack 2, USA Today’s Edward C. Baig reports, “The Windows firewall flagged Apple’s iTunes the first time I tried to use the program. I was informed some iTunes features would be blocked. Because I trust Apple’s program, I was able to click on an unblock button, and I haven’t received the warning again.”

MacDailyNews Take: It’s good news that XP SP 2 doesn’t seem to block iTunes, if users click the unblock button, that is.

1. Sometimes a “Mac zealot” or maybe even an ordinary Joe will actually SEND a story to MDN to post And they have responded pretty quickly it appears in the past to some stories that haven’t appears anywhere else. Their tagline, is, after all “Where Mac News Comes First.” Don’t like it? Aw, shucks. TBFY.

2. And I’m glad that M$ has finally deigned to provid some actual security to its bloated OS. ‘Bout time. There’s probably something NOT being said here, like how many other programs (possibly even some M$ programs) that will now have to have permission given to it to access a port or two because xp2… and you can probably bet we’ll see something akin to Little Snitch in Tiger. Just a guess…

3. The interesting question is, do you get
this warning the first time you use network
features of Windows Media Player? If the
firewall trusts a Microsoft product but does
not trust a non-Microsoft product that
competes with it, there’s a problem here.

4. Here is my take:

Why doesn’t M$ just offer Windows XP2? I am tired of all the hotfixes, patches, service pack and driver updates. If I have to wipe/re-install a system, it would be easier with a “complete” XP2 than XP, SP1, 80+ fixes/patches, and now SP2.

From what I read, many companies that handle inhouse upgrades/updates, are being allowed a “timed” program that will eventually expire. It will allow them to disable the auto-update to SP2. This will save headaches for the IT staff (short term).

But, if they know it will be a problem, why release it at all?

And anyone try the WinXP64beta? is it worth it?

5. Woowoo

Actually I downloaded it myself last might, all 266MB of it (thanks Comcast). Now my Windows XP Professional is no longer called by that appellation anymore, it now called XP – hmmm, I wonder how come?

Anyhow, my Yahoo Messenger was flagged too. Obviously it flags any site that requests too much personal info from your computer, which is EXACTLY what some sites do.

If you don’t like it, then don’t visit those sites, but don’t blame the firewall for protecting your PC. That’s the whole point of them in the first place, isn’t it???

6. Why you guys worried with something that is apparently nothing?

For me, Apple or Windows are both PC (Personal Computer)

Why so many Patches or updates on Apple and Windows? because only with patches and updates you can get something new and better, based on user input in real life (Its would be stupid if you create something perfectly… what you going to sell afterward?)

The fact that Windows is used by many people. The Hacker/Cracker/virus writer (or whatever they called them self) are not interesting to work on Apple.. yet.

Next few years both systems (maybe all) will merge.. doesn’t matter which OS you use, it will be no different.

So I don’t give a damn if you like Apple or Windows.. (I like to eat apple while sitting on windows) for me it just a disposable tools… if I feel uncomfortable using it, just buy a new one… exactly like an underware.
