Duke University to give Apple iPods to all incoming freshman

“Apple said that this fall Duke University will give iPods to all incoming freshman. Duke will hand out approximately 1,800 iPods that will be pre-loaded with Duke-related content and will allow students to download supplementary university material in addition to being able to play music,” Rex Crum reports for CBS MarketWatch.

    And the same files can be accessed from iTunes on an iBook, right? Plus, with the iBook, one can do email, research on the Net, do report/homework, do simulations, etc..

  2. I don’t think iPods can add anything to someone’s education. For files it would be cheaper and simpler to give the students 256 MB USB Memory discs and a good rebate on any computer they purchase. iPods can very easily become a distraction because they are designed for entertainment.

  3. TMO has more details. Use voice recorder … listen to Spanish (language class) … poetry … music class.

    Students will have a Web site that is modeled after Apple’s iTunes software from which to interface with available materials….

    The iPods will become property of the students at the end of the year, and upper classmen who take classes utilizing an iPod in the curriculum will be able to get loaner iPods for the duration of the course.

    The program is a “work in progress” and an experiment — they’re looking for more ideas on how to use the iPod for education. I’ve got one: build in a dictionary and thesaurus — definately good for edegycation.

  4. Duke has been a college of winners! Not losers. iPod is a great investment in the new freshman student body. Apple stock is also winner even beating out Microsoft on Wall Street!
