Survey: average Windows PC is ‘sick’ more days per year than average human

“The average PC is ‘sick’ for more days annually because of virus infection and spam overload than the average human, according to Yahoo Mail. The average UK PC is rendered unusable for the equivalent of around nine working days every year because the owner is cleaning up spam or fighting viruses. This is two days a year more than the average UK worker takes off as sick leave, according to Yahoo,” Munir Kotadia reports for ZDNet UK.

“A survey of 2,500 UK email users found that 70 percent of users had been infected by a virus in the past year and 42 percent say they found it less stressful fighting their way through rush-hour traffic than finding legitimate emails among the spam in their inboxes,” Kotadia reports.

  1. I agree with Sputnik. In the real world, PC’s are doing far more work than macs. They need more maintenance because they are doing more work. Have fun with your toys.

  2. I have found a good and solid way to keep your peecee running smoothly: Don’t use it!

It is even pretty stable that way, with only minor reboots ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  3. Hmmm, you mac users are quite defensive it seems. Im not sure about Macs as the last one i had was a original mac black and white. Stills runs BTW .. But I look at macs everytime I go shopping in a store that carries them. They look great, and the eye candy appeal is there. But are they practical ?

For gamers likely not … I do not see a whole lot of selection to be had for the Mac software from regualr retailers, perhaps mac distributors carry a large asst of software, but that remains to be seen. Im a PC user, like it, but the reality is that they are subject to a outdated microsoft platform. Still supporting x86 and such.. For professionals I think the mac would be a winner, no muss no fuss. They have some viruses if I recall, but nothing like the PC. And Linux for the pc is a improvement in some regards, but you have to be educated in it to make it work the way you want after the install. I wonder if Max OSX is the same way, you need to be much more versed in commandline approach as opposed to GUI ?

Must say, the video play back on a mac is awsome. Crystal clear, and if you have that widescreen mac monitor what a beauty !

Well there is my thoughts to mull over.. Have a great day all .. Brian

  4. Jon E Wunnut “Have fun with your toys.”

Thanks Jon! But I always have tons more fun with my Mac than with my PC’s. Thank god for Apple or working with computers would be nothing but, well, booooriiiiing. Unless, of course, you happen to like it that way.

That’s the thought floating through your mind? The company that essentially pioneered the GUI that you ‘enjoy’ with WinXP has a new OS and since it looks nice you wonder if it is okay. Why not use it yourself!?

Some viruses for Mac? Nope. Never. The most you’ll ever hear are anti-virus companies spreading FUD to increase sales… I’ll let you know when I get my first virus, pop-up window, spyware etc.

  6. The PC a SICK copy of the Mac. A copy which is subjected to zillions of viruses created by thrill riding teenage hackers. Its also like buying that cheaper grocery store brand of maple syrup that really doesnt taste that good after you try it once. At least NASA and the US Army know what to use for serious computer work.

If you currently dream of trouble free computing, I urge you for the love of humanity itself to take a closer look at the Mac in an Apple store near you. If you buy one it may just change your life. Some of the greatest creative minds use a Mac not because they simply flipped a coin. They use them for the powerful simplicity of the operating system and hardware working together to let the user be the one in full control and free of technical distractions.

Mac OS X is as simple or as sophisticated under the hood as you want it to be. Virus free.

  7. brainb, do yourself a favour and get a Mac. I can assure you, you won’t regret it.

Macs are very practical. I have done more useful things with my Mac than I ever did on a PC.

NoMacForYou, by your reference to Quark and crashing, it sounds like the Macs you support are on OS 9. As far as I can see, Quark is the only reason why anyone would still want to run Mac OS 9. OS X pisses all over OS 9. Let’s face it Quark, has really fallen behind and the sooner everyone moves to OSX and Adobe InDesign the better. Hopefully that day will be soon now that Apple no longer sell dual-booting Power Macs.

Nah… we are just laughing at all this stupidity after PC users (granted not all of them) kept making ignorant, moronic comments. Look, computer is a tool, but it also a personal preference. If your software needs are PC-only or Mac-only, then you have no choice but to buy that particular system. Otherwise, you do have choices and it’s great to be able to choose. When you consider them, do so with open mind. There are lots of myth out there against Macs.

Some of the OS X stuff are amazing, just as PC has its own strenghts. As far as viruses go, there is none (read: zero, nada, zilch) on Mac OS X. Your memory tricked you there. OS X may not have the abundance of PC game titles, but most blockbuster games are ported over. Most games on PC are crap anyway. CLI is not necessary, but if you want to be a power user, command line is your friend. If you want to know more about Macs, got to Apple Store or forums like this one. As long as you are not trolling, Mac users are happy to help you. Mac users have the best community out there.

One advice though… don’t look at price as the sole comparison. Apple does not make the cheapest PC simply because their entry level stands higher than the entry level on the PC side. Personally, the extra cost is worth it.

  9. “I have found a good and solid way to keep your peecee running smoothly: Don’t use it!”

That’s just the problem though, I have to use it, just like everyone else. The problem is it’s happening too much. The running and the smoothly, oy vey! I’d like my peecees to be a bit more solid; perhaps fiber? What do you think?

  10. JJ: Your Mac experience differs so much from others, so I think you need to fire your Mac IT personnel. They have no idea what they are doing if they allow so many problems to occur.

Out of curiosity: How do your people generate a kernel panic? I have been using OS X on two computers (a 1998 Power Mac G3 and a 2001 Powerbook G4) for over two years each and have yet to generate a kernel panic. I’ve had no viruses, no infections, no trojan horses, no IT-demanded disconnects from a corporate network. And that’s even with trying out all sorts of shareware and freeware. So what crap are your people running and why do you allow them to do that? What sort of crappy IT policy does your company have?

Probably using crappy cheap RAM. Also as someone else pointed out, still running OS 9. If that’s the case, lets compare with Win 98 machines, they came out about the same time.

The problem is that you can use the peecee with it’s standard software where it works okay. But nobody can do that, you need more software, and Microsoft have never been able to simplify the complexity it takes for all the software to work properly together.

I (have to) work with peecee’s at work with alot of different software, and we have all kinds of problems. The network suddenly – out of the blue – just wont connect with other computers, and the performance stalls, and so on. So we re-install XP about every 5-6 months.

This is un-acceptable, but this is the world we live in and people have a very hard time looking for other solutions. Why it is like this, I and some of my friends have been talking about many times. It’s strange because people do want quality lifes.

We look for the “right” (read quality) car, the best looking cloth, the correct food and so on (well, most of the time, when we have the time to consider it). But when it comes to computers, people tend to close their eyes, and buys without really considering what they need and prays that it works.

Very strange behavior. But perhaps the Microsoft monopole have been in effect for so long, that people accepts that you have to reboot every other day, and have to upgrade and reinstall Windows software every now and then.

Think for a second if this happened when you bought a car! Nobody would accept a to buy a car where the dealer couldn’t repair it. Where you would need to go to another repair shoop to fix your car (read: 3rd party software to fix registry).

For you question ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> – I can’t help you, any other than: Start using software which can be run on other platforms than Windows, and then change your platform when the time comes, like: Opera, Vim, Gimp, Apache, OpenOffice, iTunes, QuickTime, Rebol, Python, CVS/Subversion and so on.

My 3 cents and sorry for the long mail…

Great advice. Helps those with fears of going broke buying all new software WHEN they switch. Assure them that there’s lots of FREE sw that’s cross-plarform.

  14. “Bush is unpopular in Turkey, where the overwhelming majority of the public opposed the Iraq war.

As the president arrived in Turkey Saturday, supporters of Jordanian-born militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi said they kidnapped three Turkish workers in Iraq, Arab TV station al-Jazeera reported.

The group has threatened to behead the hostages, an al-Jazeera employee told The Associated Press.

The protest in the Kadikoy district, on the Asian side of Istanbul, attracted more than 40,000 people, mostly members of leftist groups, police said.”

you can see with your own eyes here
    http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/06/27/turkey.protest.ap/index.html

They try to make unfair subtle associations between 40000 anti-bush protesters in turkey and the hediondous al-Zarqawi group. Do i have to say more about how news are given in the USA freedom of press way… very oportune the introduction of both phrases between a new that has nothing to do with al-Zarqawi. Sweet!!!
