Apple today announced a faster, more affordable line of eMac desktop computers for home and schools, including faster PowerPC G4 processors running at up to 1.25 GHz, 333 MHz DDR memory, faster ATI Radeon graphics and USB 2.0 connectivity to peripherals. Offering even more power and performance, Apple

Oh my god a computer.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….
however, why not dump the crt and make this a small form factor headless mac? I would buy one
This upgrade still isn’t enough for me to sell my current emac. I will sell my emac when they come out with a 17 inch ibook
It’s a nice performance bump though. Especially that you can get one with an 8x SuperDrive for less than $1,000.
you guys are insufferable… first it bitch bitch bitch, now that they actually update something, it whine whine whine. what will it take to please you guys?
Is SuperDrive in a computer (any brand) less than a grand a premiere?
please let there be more hardware announced today…..
eMac has always been a sweet deal and now the high-end eMac is only 999. That is really incredible. But, for most the 799 deal is more than enough computer. This should set the pricing pattern for the rest of the Mac’s as they are upgraded.
Y’know, the eMac is a cheap, useful little machine. Previous versions in benchmarks were faster than the iMac.
Maybe I’m smoking crack, but if Apple had put in gigabit ethernet instead of 100/10 they could have released one darned good little small company server.
How nice. My 1Ghz eMac (that I paid $1099 for) is not even a month old. Oh well.
Ho hum.
This is a nice machine, but not very inspiring. Maybe a 64 MB video card would have been better suited to the $999 model.
I agree with comments re: the headless Mac. For $999, can we get a headless (small form factor) G5 Mac, 1.8 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB HD, 64 MB Video, USB 2.0, and Firewire 800?
Is this too much to ask?
I’ve been waiting for this to happen for three weeks now. Just in time so I can buy one for my daughters birthday. It’s perfect for her (+ GarageBand).
8x superdrive is good
I guess people can never be pelased, no hardware for months, all the bitching now it’s all the crying they should have done this & that, or this upgrade sucks. I think is it u people that are sad not apple, there a company not Santa Claus, just because you are hoping for something doesn’t mean they are going to deliver. At least just be thankful something came out.
First, I think this is a great deal. Second, if you don’t feel that this is enough to make you upgrade, congratulations! You’re happy with your computer’s performance. Third, as far as the headless computers, yes these would be great and people would definitely buy them, but for Apple, they might loose money since they’d lose money on monitor sales. Also, they’d be offering a whole new class of computers which costs more money to support. I don’t think that their market share is big enough support this diversification. At any rate, there is some risk involved.
headless and 64mb vid card would go a long way and *gasp!* mildly upgradeable
now were talkin
have they fixed the fan noise in these new ones? I have an original emac 700mhz and it is the loudest damn thing in the world, much louder than my dual 1.4 g4
i’m depressed. My top of the line Powerbook has the same processor as Apple’s entry level consumer model. They really need to distinguish the lines to justify the prices of their high end products.
My 800mhz eMac is the quietest computer I’ve had (g3 233 desktop, performa, windoze flavors).
My vote goes for ditching the screen and making it a $599 – $799 headless system.
oh wow. not an iPod related news!!!
Sounds sweet and I am sure that from a technical standpoint it was easy to implement. This might be Apple figuring they have to release SOMETHING since they may be having delays with the G5 3 GHz (rumored to be so). That said, I agree that Apple has to get on the stick now and differentiate their top end models by getting the G5 into them (PowerBooks and iMacs) as soon as possible. Leave the high speed G4s for the iBooks and eMacs (and maybe a low end iMac). I am DYING to give Apple some money for a new G5 15″ Powerbook. I think from a sales standpoint, getting the G5 into Powerbooks is MUCH more important than getting the speed up to 3 GHz. Of course it is more technically challenging too I am sure.
