RUMOR: Apple already prepping Power Mac G6?

“Wednesday, IBM will be holding its POWER/PowerPC processor event — and if these rumors prove true — we could hear from Apple shortly thereafter,” MacOS Rumors reports.

“If so, the news might be PowerMacs that will adopt the POWER5-based PowerPC 975 processor as Apple’s ‘G6,’ fulfilling Steve’s 3GHz promise and paving the way for G5 (970FX)-based Powerbooks/iMacs,” MOSR reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Rumor. However juicy, this is a rumor. Oh, but if it were true…

  1. I think this site is just really one guy doing it all with a multiple split personalities, especially since the new G6 fantasy myth popped up. Now
I believe with the new smaller size G5’s there will be a Powerbook G5 and definitely be a dual 3ghz and expect Apple to suprise and raise the bar to a new level with a quad 2.5ghz G5. This will work right alongside Intel’s “no more megahertz measurents” plan.

  2. If the new PowerMacs use the same processors as what the G5 XServes use then they could be called G5+

G6 should be reserved to those dual core CPUs that IBM will make for Apple in the future.

  3. The problem Apple currently has is far too compressed a product line due to Motorola freezing processor development in amber for two years.

There is no problem except that apple’s brand is at odds w their hope for market share growth…

too compressed? go check sony’s laptop line.. apple’s ‘compressed’ line is clear and easy understand (except for the low end imac who’s gonna buy that?)… i very much appreciate apple’s well structed lines…

    cheapo/edu, home-mid range, power users.

that’s it. pretty easy to understand I love it…

again.. don’t ask for powerful ibooks when you have powerbooks.. etc.

  4. STUNNING NEWS!

In related news, Apple will release it’s long anticipated “Anniversary” Mac – code named “GerbIL”. Unnamed sources (and anonymously submitted “spy” napkin drawings found in a Cupertino trash can) reveal that the new Quad processor will be a retro throwback! Consisting of 4 complete aluminum mac G5’s harnessed together, the new Mac’s will have neon Tunnel’s connecting one to the other. According to our sources, the tubes will enable gerbils to run between each Mac, disipating much of the heat problems without the use of fans! Happy Day!

  5. Mike: learn to read. Yeah, Apple has different product lines, but I was pointing out that the divisions Apple wants to keep don’t work now because all except the Powermacs are running the same chip–the G4:

    iMac–G4.
eMac–G4, and at times outperforming the iMac!
    iBook–G4.
    Powerbook-G4.

Apple arbitrarily keeps the Superdrive out of the iBook. Why? Because if the iBook had a Superdrive the 12″ iBook would gut 12″ Powerbook sales. Macaddict does a review of the eMac and deterimines that, inexplicably, the cheapo educational/kids machine is faster than the 1 GHz iMacs. Across the portable product line there’s a huge price range, and an extremely compressed performance range.

  6. I have to say I agree with Opinionated Jerk on this one. If I was not waiting for a G5 powerbook and buying right now, I would have a hard time justifying the cost of the G4 Powerbook over the G4 ibook. I hope this rumor is correct and the new chips come out soon.

  7. OJ, what you say is sound. A clear division based on the G#, rather then on the offering would benefit many and guide people to the right product for them.

    G4 ibooks and emacs
    G5 powerbooks and imacs
    G6 powermacs

Not bad. One could argue that it was that way with the G3 (old iBooks) but the G3 was a too old underperforming chip while the G4 easily satisfies a large spectrum of applications/users.

With IBM leading the chip path Apple has undeniably a better future ahead.

  8. Enough already: you said, “not counting the iPod mini and the so call iMac 20′ update it has been since last May since we have had a hardware update.”

I gotta ask… what planet are you posting from? Yes, the eMacs got bumped from 800MHz to 1GHz last May, so you’re correct to note that there were hardware updates in May.

But the very next month, Apple announced the Power Mac G5’s – remember those? And announced the final OS9-supporting Power Mac G4 model. The G5’s started showing up around August-September, and Apple speed-bumped the 15″ and 17″ iMacs and *all* the PowerBook models in September, switched the iBook from G3 to G4 in October, added the 1.8 GHz dual-processor model to the G5 lineup in November (the same day they introduced the 20″ iMac, which you *did* notice), and of course announced the Xserve G5’s (which have now begun to ship) the same day as the iPod Mini.

So… you noticed 2 product announcements, missed 2 other product announcements that were made on the same days as those two, and by my count, totally overlooked _10_ product introductions/upgrades that took place during the timeframe you’re talking about.

    Pay attention!

  9. The way I see it is there’s not necessarily a need for low-end machines. It depends on the manufacturing costs. If it’s significantly cheaper to make an iBook than a Powerbook, then it makes sense. But if the costs is just there to satify the marketplace, then it’s likely that the powerbook buyers are subsidising the iBook buyers for very small performance gains.

What I’d do is scrap the 14″ iBook and scrap the 12″ powerbook, but put its guts into the 12″ iBook and allow the superdrive/BT/AE as BTO. I don’t believe that the 12″PB really costs any more to manufacture than the 12″ iBook.

Artificially manipulating the product line means that the consumer machines don’t appear to compete as well with their windows counterparts.

  10. You MOSR haters are complete idiots. If you cannot distinguish Rumors from News, then we should send you back to school. Rumors are:
    1. Fun.
    2. Good food for thought.
    3. Fun.

If you hate gossip and rumors then avoid threads with RUMOR in the title.

  11. Apple sells slow old computers
Apple users own slow old computers

The amount of G5’s that have been sold is far short of what IBM was planning for. They IBM are going to move away from Apple and focus on marketing their chips to the BladServer market they control.

I hate to say it but Apple is once again stuck in a dead chip waiting for a company to develop a new chip for only a few sales to a dying platform.

IBM is not going to invest in new Apple chips when their return on investment is so very small….

It is a sad day for Apple users… the upcoming IBM event will not even talk about the Apple/IBM chips.

The G5 chip is dead for the Apple users.

  12. Again, I have nothing against rumors or MOSR. (I do prefer MacRumors, as their accuracy has consistently been on top.)

I have something against people taking something from MOSR et all and making too much of it. THAT happens all the time. Then people (a micro-minority, but annoying and vocal) whine that Apple has betrayed them.

  13. hywel – it’s about marketing. iBook and powerbook target different consumers. by having product differentiation you can sell to more customers than you would by just having one product.

  14. Never ceases to amaze me that folks can get their undies into such a twist over rumors. Lighten up people, speculation is fun, and nothing more. Of far greater importance, IMHO, is IBM’s announcement that they’re considering opening the POWER architecture. If companies engage in a collaborative process with IBM to develop future iterations of the POWER series, there is a distinct possibility that the development cycle may shorten, features undreamt of may find their way into the chips, and more importantly, Intel would shit razor blades.

  15. How rumors start: Joe works at Apple, his boss muses that the 975 would be a good candidate for a G6. Joe tells his buddy Fred that the 975 could be called a G6. Fred immediately emails MOSR that “my friend Joe in Apple product development says the 975 will be a G6.”

There is a grain of truth to that rumor, but since no decision has been made, we don’t know whether it’ll be true. All that is accurate is that the possibility has been mooted.

All you people who whine about MOSR just need to lighten up. Stuff like this is fun. If you want facts and the truth read news sites, if you want idle speculation and wild guesses read a rumors site.
