First of all, I am saddened by the loss of people in the attack and am angry at the cold-blooded, brainwashed killers. I am not going to pretend to know what it’s like to go through something like that, though I think I can imagine it. I applaud the Spaniards for not letting the fear take over their lives and I can appreciate your view about the election.
However, try to see it from the other side. If you were a terrorist recruiter, were you going to say you were lost and Spanish people and democracy won? Of course not, you say you win and the proof is the “regim change” as predicted by the terrorists’ plan. You have your truth, and they have their truth. In their case, your truth is not important. As long as they see themselves as winning and their tactics working, they will keep on attacking. There is no easy way out since changes in policy can be construed as apeasement and surrender. The new PM must make sure to announce that any policy change is not due to terror (your example does not work since there is no change in the policy, so the terror doesn’t accomplish anything).
It is a mistake to think that you can deal with terrorists, especially those who cloak themselves in religion. It is also a mistake to apply your own moral values when you think about them. They don’t want you to die because of government policy or any other disputes. They just want you dead. Period. Being an infidel is good enough a reason to be killed.
