Sales of Apple’s iPod mini ‘through the roof’

“iPod has exploded. Sales of a miniversion of the popular digital music player by Apple Computer Inc. are through the roof, local retailers say. Staff at Best Buy in Saginaw Township [Michigan] say they’re out of the iPod mini that just went on sale a couple of weeks ago,’ Paul Wyche reports for The Saginaw News.

“‘We have people coming in everyday asking for it,’ said a worker at the electronics store, 4460 Bay. ‘It’s in demand.’ Workers at Circuit City, 2970 Tittabawassee, in Kochville Township say they still are awaiting a shipment of the fast-selling gadget by the Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple. Steve Mullen, spokesman for the electronics outlet, said supplies of the iPod are available in limited supply on the store’s Web site. Shipping is free,” Wyche reports. “‘It’s definitely a popular product, that’s for sure.'”

  1. Who said this would be a flop?? HA!!
I think the price is just right compared to other flash based players.
Hell iRiver just came out with a 4 GB MP3 player that is bigger than the iPod mini and has less features and costs $400 dollars!!!
    Go Apple!!!

  2. Go Apple. But don’t forget you promised us 3.0GHz G5 by this summer when you introduced the G5 last year. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  3. James Bond is the Man with the Golden Gun
Steve Jobs is the Mam with the Golden Gut
His sense of what the market is ready for is very, very keen. Just imagine where Apple would be now if he hadn’t left after Sculley came on board.

  4. Yeah, but the iRiver has a built-in voice recorder that you can use to record your suicide note after finding out you could’ve had an iPod. There’s even a neckstrap to help you finish the job.

  5. “Yeah, but the iRiver has a built-in voice recorder that you can use to record your suicide note after finding out you could’ve had an iPod. There’s even a neckstrap to help you finish the job.”

You missed your calling as a comedy writer. I’m still laughing! Brilliant!

  6. The only cloud on the horizon I see is that if there’s demand for a million players a month (just pulled that out of my ass) and Apple can only supply 100 thousand a month, 900 thousand people may settle for something else.

This has happened to Apple before – and has been a real disaster too.

  7. Ahhh….wouldnt it be nice if we heard the words “Sales of Apple’s COMPUTERS ‘through the roof'”….

BTW – One of the main purposes of iPod was to get Windows users to buy Apple computers, wonder what the statistics on that are.

  8. It’s interesting to note that the biggest ad I’ve seen so far for the iPod Mini is not in MacWord, not in Wired, not in any tech magazine. It’s in the new edition of Vanity Fair, a special tip-in, double-page ad with tipped in, full size replicas of the Mini in its different colors. The Mini also gets prime real estate in the new Bloomingdales catalog. The point is this: the Mini is targeted particularly at upscale urban women particularly and urban professional men secondarily, not geeks. It’s a point completely missed by the geeks and Slashdot message board railbirds who slammed its design at the outset. Many of the women buying the Mini could care less about Gigabytes or how it compares to the iRiver or Creative players. What matters to them is whether the color of their Mini will go with their Jaguar convertable or Prada handbag.

That’s something Windows geeks simply will never understand. But Apple does. They have done it again, by finding a target market and hitting it spot-on. For the rest of us, there’s the other iPods in larger sizes (for those of you who constantly worry about how big yours is).

To sum up: men worry about size. Women worry about style. So get over it already.

  9. Creative MuVo2 is 4gb….usb 2.0 and is $200 (and to transfer files, you drag and drop, not use any software)

Not as cool as ipod mini….but as long as you’re putting the iRiver in here, you might as well put something that’s got the same parts as the iPod.

Sure, it’s not as stylish, but sounds just as good.

But I guess it’s style over substance, isn’t it?

  10. “Yeah, but the iRiver has a built-in voice recorder that you can use to record your suicide note after finding out you could’ve had an iPod. There’s even a neckstrap to help you finish the job.”

    Funnnnnneeeeee! ;-]

  11. “With the iPod and iPod Mini we get both – style AND substance.”

Yeah, that’s witty, but what does it mean? You’re paying 50 dollars more so you can have it in pink….style to me. They’re the same size. They sound the same. Same battery life.

Apple has the scroll wheel. oooh!
You have to risk destroying your ipod if you want to replace the battery. Again…oooh!
iPod works with iTunes…..I “steal” my music, anyway.

To review: the only thing iPod mini has over the Muvo2 is the interface, and the name. I’m sure that’s substance to some. Not like 50 bucks is significant anyway.

Anyway, I’ll let you go back to your apple circle jerk.

  12. “Who said this would be a flop?? HA!!”

    HA is right! ;o)

No wonder most of these armchair CEOs and economists are actually Wal-Mart clerks and managers of Taco Bell. ;o) Thats about all they actually have skill enugh to manage in REAL LIFE.

  13. No, R.V. …apple has a brand recognition and a certain “je ne sais quoi” about the products they produce, and economists are mathmeticians. It’s style vs. Math and probability; you wouldn’t trust Tod Oldham to teach you about advanced calculus. Trust me, these guys are no slouches, and they could run mathmatical cirles around your graphic design ‘creative’ mind.

  14. ipod over muvo is more than style its the features and how easy it us to use. so the interface is just a little thing? good to know ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> i guess you don’t need all those other ipod features either. i got all my friends phone numbers in mine and its great.

    hmmmm…..wonder there the name “stupid” came from ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

and most people care about colors of what they buy, so i like my pink too!

    enjoy your fabulous muvo.

  15. Muvo 2 yeah its all right if you arn’t fussy but I wouldn’t pay $50 dollars less for it. Isn’t it great when you can just feeeeel the hatred building in some people lol. Stupid innit.

  16. Did Stupid read Mr. Incredible’s post? It came right before his?! Incredible made the friggin’ point spot-on. The Mini is NOT targeted at geeks like us, it’s aimed at consumers who prefer style and ease of use. A name is more than a name, I suppose.

  17. If the iPod Mini is doing so well now I can see it doing even better when the capacity reaches 20 GB. Right now it is more of a novelty item, like all flash memory players, but once a whole music library can fit in something that small it will become much more useful.

As for the 1.8″ hard-drives used in the bigger iPods, perhaps they would be better utilised in hand-held Mini Macs. That or the rumoured Home On iPod feature will become a part of OS X and the next full-size iPods will be used as back-up hard-drives.
