“StarBrite is selling a pPod, a virtual iPod for Pocket PCs, that — given Apple’s past tolerance for knockoffs — may not be available for very long. On the market just two weeks, the product is a software iPod that runs on Pocket PCs, Microsoft’s Palm-like operating system for handhelds,” Leander Kahney reports for Wired News.

“The virtual iPod is, well, virtually identical to a real iPod. The application fills the Pocket PC’s entire screen with a faithful facsimile of the iPod, including the player’s distinctive scroll wheel and four buttons for playing, pausing and so on. Like the iPod, the pPod is controlled by its virtual scroll wheel. Most Pocket PCs have touch-sensitive screens, which allow users to navigate the pPod’s menus with their fingers — just like the iPod,” Kahney reports.
“Naturally, the pPod’s interface is also just like the iPod’s. Songs are arranged by a series of nested menus, which can be browsed by artist, album, genre, etc. ‘It works exactly the same way, except it’s software and it costs $20,” said a spokesman for the company, who wished to remain anonymous. The price is not the only difference between the real and virtual iPod,’ Kahney reports. “The pPod software plays only songs encoded as MP3 files. It does not support WMA, nor songs downloaded from Apple’s popular iTunes Music Store, which are encoded as copy-protected AAC files.”
“Brian Ferguson, an intellectual property lawyer with McDermott, Will & Emery in Washington, D.C., said he wasn’t familiar with Apple’s patent portfolio, but if the iPod is patent-protected — and it likely is — the software may well infringe on the patent,” Kahney reports. “‘I’m just speculating, but I’d be surprised if Apple didn’t patent-protect some of the ideas in the iPod,’ he said. ‘If it does infringe on the patents, end of story.'”

Here is the problem. I tried to put MP3’s on my PocketPC. How many songs did I get on a 128MB card, (with nothing else on the card)? 11. Oh, yeah, if you put WMA’s on there (instead of MP3’s), they sound tinny.
I’m getting a real iPod.
I believe that Compaq had the iPaq long before the iPod was available. HP acquired the iPaq when they gobbled up Compaq. Perhaps Apple should have to rename the iPod? I am one of those people that will listen to music on my PDA. Why? Because I paid enough for the thing that I don’t need to blow another wad on an mp3 player. I�ve got 2 albums and ~30 other songs on my CF Card, with room for important documents. Sure, the capacity is limited. I can run out and but a microdrive and bump it up (at the expense of battery life). I’ve listened to music on 4 hour flights and still had the juice to do what I needed before getting to a charger. I see a place for PDAs serving as MP3 players.
Admittedly, Starbright did not show any real innovation in this software. It is a knockoff and emulates the iPods controls. All they had to do was retain the same functionality and give it a different look and no one would have cared. I have no doubt that they are trying to sell their product on the success of the iPod, but to see Mac users whining and calling for Apple to sue away because God forbid someone from the outside encroaches on their clique, make me laugh. Like 1hunglo said above, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
I use an AXIM x5 and my pda battery lasts 6-10 hours playing mp3s it lasts 10 if i turn off the screen. Why the hell would u want a rip off program and why would u want an ipod which has a dodgy battery that has a life of a little over a year. ooh yer i have a 1024 mb CF card and 2x 256mb sd cards. And i can play, MP3, wma, ogg vorbis and movies MOVIES people!! eg southpark :p
