Animate your Mac OS X Desktop with Screen Effects

You can run a Screen Effect module on the desktop in Jaguar! Very cool and shows off Mac OS X’s mighty Quartz capabilities nicely. How to do it:

1. Run the Terminal application (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. At the prompt, type the command exactly as below into the Terminal WITHOUT the line break:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &

The screensaver you’ve chosen in the Screen Effects pane of System Preferences will become your desktop background, under your windows and icons! To switch to a differnet Screen Effect, choose one in System Preferences’ Screen Effects pane and run the command again in the terminal. This feature is Jaguar only.

To kill this effect, run the Process Viewer (in Applications/Utilities) and highlight ScreenSaverEngine and Quit Process from the Processes menu.
