Red-faced Microsoft pulls webpage of faked Mac to Windows XP switcher

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, er, ummmm, sorry, we’ll straighten up. This one’s a doozey. Here goes. As we reported earlier today, a page was recently posted on Microsoft.com that included the story of a young woman who switched from Macintosh to Windows XP. Sudden brain damage, you ask? Nope, it’s even better! Listen to this: a nice photo of her was there for all the world to see. Well, thanks to some Sherlock over at Slashdot, her picture turns out to be a stock photo from GettyImages.

And it seems now that Microsoft’s removed the page (google cache here), as soon as the truth about this fake hit Slashdot. Now if only the truth would come out that Windows is a poorly executed fake of the Mac OS, all would be right with the world. The Slashdot stuff is here. The actual Getty Images’ photo is here.

UPDATE Monday, October 14, 2002 10:31AM ET: “Turns out, strangely enough, that the woman in the ad works for a public relations company hired by (cough!) Microsoft. And, spookier still, the firm the woman works for was indeed the one that came up with the idea for the ad in the first place,” reports The Inquirer. Read it here.
