Teenager convicted for killing over Apple iPod
Wednesday, June 21, 2006 - 10:07 PM EDT

"A teenager who was part of a gang that fatally stabbed a 15-year-old boy over an iPod was convicted Tuesday of murder," The Associated Press reports.

"Brooklyn prosecutor Charles Hynes said a jury deliberated for three hours before convicting Darren Samuel, 17, of robbery and second-degree murder in the July attack. He faces as many as 25 years in prison," AP reports.

"The victim, Christopher Rose, was stabbed in the chest when he and friends resisted a group that accosted them in the street and demanded they give up an iPod one of them was carrying," AP reports.

Sad, truly sad.

Jun 21, 06 - 10:37 pm Comment from: R

I once served on a jury for a teenage murder-- he was convicted. No matter if justice is served, there is nothing to smile about. Two lives wasted.

Meanwhile, 50 Cent and Eminem are inspired. They promise to to put the rap in crapstorm. Or the other way around. Keep on killin' my chillin'. What?

Depends on the build. My guess is 3.1

Jun 21, 06 - 11:33 pm Comment from: Static Mesh

I'll tell you the truth from personal experience, those young gangs who prey on others only learn empathy after something terribly horrible physically happens to them.

They all big in the group, but take a body part from each of them and see how bad ass they are after that.

Jun 21, 06 - 11:34 pm Comment from: do not resist

The death of the victim is a tragedy, of course. But others can learn from what may have been the victim's fatal mistake.

A human life is more important than an iPod! If it were me, I would have given the gang the iPod without resistance. The iPod and the songs on it could have been replaced. But now there is nobody to listen to them. :-(

Jun 21, 06 - 11:40 pm Comment from: Greg

This story has absolutely nothing to do with iPod. The bottom line is that if you give any device to a large enough percentage of the general population, the chances that one of those devices will center in a violent crime becomes statistically probable. In the early days of cell phones, there were probably a few people who were murdered for those as well. It's a shame, but it's nothing new, and it's got nothing to do with iPod, per se.

Jun 21, 06 - 11:44 pm Comment from: Sad

Earlier this year there were news about Myspace.com incidents, i think one of them was a murder. I guess anything popular ends up associating to everyday human life.

Apple and Nike are a good match. People have killed for both their products.

Greg... good points... it's like back in the day when kids were getting killed for Air Jordans.

Okay, someone has to say this,

Finally, the first and only true iPod killer.

I'm leaving now to wash my mouth out with soap.

Jun 22, 06 - 12:23 am Comment from: Static Mesh

Oh guys!!

Guess what I've found!

A early test of the Quad Core Conroe that will most likely make it's way into the next Mac Pro (PowerMac G5 replacement) here shortly.

I think it would be rather temptating of Apple to put two of these in a Mac Pro. (8 cores total!)

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1527913

Jun 22, 06 - 12:29 am Comment from: Static Mesh

What I suspect Apple will do is again provide three Mac Pro models,

two will be Quad Cores and the very high end will be 8 cores.

They have done this twice before

Single 1.6 and 1.8 Dual 2 (when PowerMac G5 first released)

Dual 2, Dual 2.3 and Quad. (like right now)

New line up

QuadTel, QuadTel and Dual QuadTel

Jun 22, 06 - 12:46 am Comment from: The Other Steve

They can call it the Mac Quadra! wink

(How did we get on this subject again?)

Jun 22, 06 - 01:00 am Comment from: MacBill

Only 25 years for killing another human being!? They should lock this guy away FOR LIFE!!

This guy got off EASY, and someone else is gonna get killed as a result.

First of all, he'll be living the good life in jail -- free meals & free cable TV & free basketball & free exercise equipment! And then when he gets the bonus of getting out scot-free when he's 43 years old, he'll go and kill another person.

Really great justice system we have here.

Jun 22, 06 - 01:08 am Comment from: Static Mesh

Ok this is what I've found out,

It's two dual core Conroes on one chip, making it a quad. It's called Kensfield

It will be released in volume by Intel in Jan 07, so it's possible this Expo will have a announcment. (Sony too, BlueRay) With hopefully new MacTel Pro's by the holidays.

Mac OS X 10.5 will be out before then, so they can get the bugs worked out.

Also listen to this!!!

It can be air cooled!!! So expect the single Quad cores to be air cooled and the dual Quad cores to be liquid cooled.

Temps of the Kensfield without a fan are around 95-100ºF

Cinebench 2003 -Multiple CPU render test (aka "Daylight" render) - 16 seconds!!!!

Static, that's because this isn't a chat forum. Its just a mac news site that allows for reader feedback in regards to the article at hand. There are many Mac/Apple chat forums and message boards available though, and since your good at finding things on the internet, I suggest you check one of them out.

"It's a shame, but it's nothing new, and it's got nothing to do with iPod, per se."

Now if it were a Windows Media device, clearly that WOULD be Bill Gate's fault.

Jun 22, 06 - 06:53 am Comment from: Cubert

Do Not Resist,
Just giving up your wallet or your iPod or whatever the mugger is asking for doesn't always work. Here in Philadelphia, I am friends with one of the highest ranking police officers on the force. According to him, nearly 50% of the time the person who was shot or stabbed in a robbery complied with the mugger. They don't want to be ID'ed in a line-up!

This is a sad story, but exactly how is this Mac (as in MacDailyNews) news??

Jun 22, 06 - 09:14 am Comment from: Mac Realist

It is obvious that there are iPods running around with no useful playing purpose. These devices are extremely dangerous and should be removed from the market immediately. In addition, Apple should be held responsible for producing such a dangerous product. When will the government finally take charge against Apple for killing people? We must unite to protect the children!

Jun 22, 06 - 09:26 am Comment from: radiomoscow

a few ppl have been killed by ipods because they cant hear the cars about to run them over

sheesh ...mdn word blood

Jun 22, 06 - 09:30 am Comment from: Christopher

Really backs up the story I heard several months ago where people in the news were having their ipods ripped off on NYC subways and either the police, transit authority or the news media were telling people to wear headphones of any color other than the trademark iPod white.

It was only a matter of time...

Jun 22, 06 - 10:22 am Comment from: Moog The Magnificent

Shouldn't this headline contain the standard "More blood on iPod's click wheel?"

Jun 22, 06 - 10:25 am Comment from: Sick People

What is wrong with some of you people? How sick and sadistic do you have to be to make fun of a fellow human being for being killed - especially a child? No one has the right to pass judgment on this situation unless you were involved in the situation. You represent Apple fans in the worst way possible. I am ashamed.

this kid should be stabbed just like he stabbed his victim. no questions, no appeals and no pleas from his parents. just stab him with a dull, rusty knife.

MacBill:

You're a fucking idiot. You and the rest of your ilk. try getting locked up for a while, just a measly six month stint for a misdomener. Then come back and tell me how easy it was. You fucking twit.

Jun 22, 06 - 02:09 pm Comment from: Jerry T

BeenThere,

So what you're saying is prison is tough? So we ought to feel bad for the killers and make it easier on them? Because you big tough guys can't take it (said in a sarcastic baby’s voice)

I get sick of hearing how hard prison is. Yeah, it’s hard. It’s PRISON dumb ass. It’s for people who are unable or unwilling to live like most of the rest of us. People who put me or my family in danger, so forgive me if I care a sh*t less how hard life has become for a g*ddamn killer.

You got 6 months? Well f*ck you. Don't commit the crime if you can't do the time, assh*le. Now do I believe that someone who didn’t pay a traffic fine deserves the same treatment as a killer? Well, if you think that I do you’re an idiot.

Jun 22, 06 - 08:01 pm Comment from: BeenThere

Jerry T:

Yeah, prison is tough, motherfucker! And I didn't ask anybody for a goddam thing. I didn't ask for easy this or that or anything else you piece of shit son of a bitch, and it wasn't six months fuck head it was 15 years. I did my time, and I took it like a man. And when they offered me parole, I told them to shove it up their momma's ass, and I did every fucking day of my time. I did it without cable TV or any other luxuries you panty-waist bastards seem to think people get in there. And when I got out I was completely free, debt paid. So you and the rest of you goody two shoe motherfuckers can take your whimpering about how easy time is to do and crawl back up your momma's ass where you belong.

When this iPod killer punk gets to prison, he'll be there for about a week, and he'll be counting the dead kid as the lucky one. The suicide rate for young boys is kind of high. Unless they like being bitches. Like you, punk.

Jun 22, 06 - 11:43 pm Comment from: jd

first of all, i'm not good enough to comment on retribution or justice cos i've done wrongs too...but to kill someone is just not the right thing to . Money, a desperation method to get hold of life?.....and to some posters encouraging tastless "jokes" about this murder should be shamed of urselfs....cos the bible says that forgive one who is a victim to atrocious things and if the victim is seriously willing to change with tears in his eyes, do forgive him too.....
