Report: Apple to launch video iPod next week

“Apple Computer has begun production of a new version of its iPod digital music player that will be capable of playing videos… Reliable sources believe the iPod could be introduced as early as next week, possibly around the time Apple releases results from its fourth fiscal quarter of 2005,” Kasper Jade reports for Apple Insider. “…sources who claim to have seen the new iPod describe it as being similar to Apple’s 60GB iPod photo player, but several millimeters thinner [and features] a smaller click-wheel akin to that of the iPod nano’s, making way for a larger, higher-resolution color display that extends further down the face of the device.”

Jade reports, “The release of the iPod video is expected to be accompanied by a ‘major update’ to Apple’s iTunes music store that will include a significant number of music videos and other short video content.”

  1. The current iPod screen is already 2 inches, so if the new one has a smaller click wheel and larger screen, then it won’t be a 2 inch video screen then will it? My question is, are there enough people out there willing to pay $399+ for video capability on an iPod? I’m not so sure myself.

  2. The screen is still msaller than say,a PSP screen. That seems too small to me, but I just got a 20GB color iPod three weeks ago. This new iPod will probably cost $599US, like the Photo did when it debuted.

  3. My gut feeling is that this will make it very useful to videographers who want to pipe raw video into it as storage and then upload it to FCP to edit. i just hope it has a larger hardrive than what is current – DV eats up a lot of space.

And if it does HD, well, I’ll just have to kiss yo mama!

  4. “where are the new powerbooks? Is Apple all about iPod these days?”

Yeah, so much for any new Macs next week. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />

But then again, never dismiss a possible “one more thing” announcement.

  5. Took them long enough! I might actually purchase an iPod if it turns out it finally has video capability! Be nice if it records video too though. Been waiting a long time for his inevitability…in the meantime I have my highly useful Archos that plays video…and records too.

  6. el lamo if it’s just video iPods with music videos on iTMS. SJ has said that he’s not interested in introducing a device that plays video on a tiny screen. I don’t think a slightly smaller scrollwheel and a slightly larger screen on an iPod will change his mind. And he *certainly* won’t release a video iPod that’s aimed only at videographers.

He said in January that this is the year of HD. If he wants to really make good on that promise, then iTMS starts to sell HD-quality movies, using a subscription service. You download them to your computer via iTunes, then you stream them to you TV via Airport Express.

  7. Gwendoline: “where are the new powerbooks? Is Apple all about iPod these days?”

This is why Jon Rubenstein is the head of the iPod division. Consumer electronics is where the future is. iPod, iPod video, media set-top box, video enabled Airport Express…

Once the consumer electronics gets going, they will license OS X to PC hardware vendors and get out of the run of the mill hardware business. Of course, they will still make the “top of line” hardware for professional use (audio, graphics, video).

    MW: perhaps

  8. I am 12 and I use F.C.P. to edit my movies on. I have a 20GB iPod Photo and the iTunes phone. I want to get rid of my iPod, but now I see this video iPod. CRAP. I am broke. Spent it all on the phone. Hopefully get one for X-mas and I will also dump my shuffle. I NEED A G5. I have a powerbook and new eMac. The eMac is having some major problems!

  9. Nice link Spark. Exactly. IF there is going to be a video iPod, it would be useless to make it fit “old” NTSC standards, or to have a tiny screen. The thing would have to use a smaller wheel AND be used sideways, like the PSP.

  10. whatever it is, certainly it will not be good enough and people will whine like babies

The video may be able to be shown on the teenie tiny screen that it will include, but, the better use for it will be to hook it to a tv and play the video there.

  11. I wouldn’t think much of a video iPod, but the Sony PSP is getting excellent sales of UMD versions of movies for it. Newsweek reports that at least a couple of movies, not including Spiderman, have sold over 100K copies in 1-2 months. It took 9 months to sell 100K copies of a DVD movie (some Harrison Ford flick got the honors) when they debuted many years ago.

So there is some desire to watch on a small screen, if the device is small enough to carry like even a PSP. And the iPod will be smaller and its 40 or 80 GB hard drive will certainly be better than carrying UMDs.

  12. BFD,
I felt the samw way about the iPod. Was upset they hadn’t resurrected the Nweton like the rumors claimed. I swore I’d never own one, bought the first model the day they were released and have bought one for each of my kids. Lets see what happens first.

  13. “How about a little teeny tiny DLP projector that uses one of these superbright white LEDs. Project a 30-50 inch wide image. Make it not much bigger than the iPod.”

An LED projecting a 30-50inch wide image??? That’s idiotic! Even starlight would wash it out!

Where do these morons keep coming from, anyhow????

  14. Just rethought all this:

They will launch a video iPod (for music videos) because together with the nano, the entire market segment is redone. Video capability (and iTunes-available videos) with the mosst stylish, teeny-tiny player with iTunes. That means that Apple has the lead for a LONG time as the rest play catch up on multiple fronts.

    Wow…

  15. what if it is a video iPod that the nano can plug into like a pc card? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

    Anyway, I want a nanobook.

MW year as in Year of HD

  16. I’m not sure there’s any significant market for handheld video players. Music players in your pocket is one thing – you can get on and do stuff (exercise, cycle, drive, work, etc, etc) whilst listening to your music. But video demands 100% attention. If I’m going to sit down and watch a movie, I want more than a 2″ screen. Otherwise, I’d rather read a book and listen to some music…

  17. If you would like to rip DVD’s, the software name is “handbreak.” Handbreak is free, but not that good. You can not pick when to start and stop. DVDxDV is not free, but much better. Jhym is a program where you can strip the righs off an iTunes music download so that you can transfer your music to more then 5 users. Just a fun fact. All illegal though. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
    MW: amount

  18. I predict…

The iPod Video will have major battery life issues on some models just like the nano had with the screen. Also, the screen will freeze on occasion for all users and for some the screen may fail to start up commpleatly… (spelled that wrong)… I know this will happen for a fact.

Like i said.. once more podcasts get video content, you’ll be able to sift through a wide variety of news reports and sports highlights on your ipod.. and it’s free.. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

    (for now)

  20. Paul, I would like to agree with you, but if the device is as small as the regular iPod, I’d be willing to watch on a 3.5″ screen while waiting in an airport or other station, or in an airplane, bus, train, subway, or car (passenger of course). Note that several UMD movies are selling pretty well for the PSP – a development that has taken me by surprise.

And if Apple releases an SDK for apps and especially games, well, the iPod with its hi-res color screen begins to become a GameBoy/PSP competitor but no cartridges; everything sold via Internet download and stored on the device. I say this only because Apple was hiring SDK and game development engineers for the iPod several months ago.

  21. A video iPod introduction does not merit a special event in my opinion. This is something much bigger.

The addition of video to the iPod is a small evolution of the iPod photo’s capability and would only achieve parity with other devices already out there. Hopefully the red curtains suggest home theater, but not a movie store. Even the best bandwidth today is much too small for downloadable HD movies.

  22. This event will likely have nothing to do with any new iPod device. Instead, I get the feeling it will be mainly about a new way of purchasing movies and videos. Everyone knows that the real downside, even with H.264’s amazing ability to shrink file sizes (while maintaining great quality), is the file size for a full-length movie. It would take forever for the average Joe to download.

So, what I think is going on here is a new way to share and distribute snippets of movies, video segments, etc. I’m also willing to bet that most new iPods and the new iPod nano will already be able to play this new motion content.

The best examples I can come up with would be Disney/Pixar short animations, sports highlights and obviously music videos. These would all be available at very reasonable download sizes. And can you imagine the explosion in video content if people were able to play videos of their friends, loved ones, etc. that could be transferred from their computers to their iPods to watch at their leisure. These types of activities all represent small downloadable files – which is the only way video will ever work on an iPod.

  23. A SD movie would take 2hrs. to download using H.264 and 6hrs. to download a HD movie. Frank Casanova (Apple Senior Director of Product Marketing for QuickTime) said at 6 Mb/s the same rate as todays DVDs, you can create a HD image using H.264. I wonder why Frank would say that? Frank also said: “This (H.264) changes EVERYTHING.” Everything? You mean the way people buy and/or rent video?

Whatever Apple is going to intro it is going to be HUGE. Will this announcement confirm Steve’s pronouncement of 2005 as the “Year of HD?” and will it be awesome enough to take the wind out of MSs XBOX360 introduction in Nov. ? Certainly not a regular iPod announcement I hope!

  24. This theater will host the event because there will be a “performance” of some kind. My guess is that Steve will reach into his pocket again, but this time he will pull out a remote control… push a button and the screen will open up as the lights go down. Get ready folks!!!

  25. I think video from ITMS combined with Airport Express A/V makes more sense at this time … to get the infrastructure in place for people to download video content to their computer which they can easily route to their TV’s. A video iPod only would work if you could hook it to your TV as well.

This makes more sense to me than a ‘media centre’ that many have speculated on … it would be cheaper and not replicate the computer you already have. I also think an ITMS video/Airport Express A/V combination would be a pre-emptive strike against M$ for living room control (which they are trying to make happen with the Xbox 360).

  26. whatever it is apples gonna release it will be something that we never thought of in a form facotr that we previously thought was impossible (just look at the mac mini or ipod nano)…if there is an ipod video i bet that it will not look anything like what people are thinking it will look like so theres no use in speculating…we’ll just have to wait
