Apple: iTunes Allowances to end May 25, 2016

Apple has announced that iTunes Allowances will end on May 25, 2016.

After April 13, 2016, you will no longer be able to create a new iTunes Allowance. All existing allowances will cancel May 25, 2016.

After May 25, any unused allowance credit will remain in the recipient’s account until it’s used.

To manage iTunes purchases made by your family, use Family Sharing. To send gifts to family and friends, use iTunes Gifts.

    1. iTunes Allowances are like an allowance from your parents. As a teen, I found out about iTunes Allowance and told my mom about it, and she’d give me $15 a month to buy music for my iPod. Good times.

  1. They can keep it and allow the user to continue using it for self use. Some what like a piggy bank where you save over a period of time to purchase something big. It might not make sense in developed nations but in developing nations like India it would make a whole lot of sense with the right amount of marketing.

  2. No, it makes great sense in developing nations. If it was not heavily used in USA it is because it was not marketed well.
I was using this feature, and my kids and I loved it.
The only two options left are Family sharing and sending Itunes gifts to ones own child.
Gifting ones own child every month for years….what a pain!
And parents will not want to share their kids music collection. Managing their iPod/iPhone will become hell.
The other option, I understand, is that the child can click to buy and parent will get email requesting approval. Sounds like a hackers dream!

This is a poor decision on Apples part. What exactly did they gain by implementing it? What was the reason for the decision? Apple is mum on this.
