“For the past seven months we have been told how the Apple Watch is the most personal device Apple has ever created,” Neil Cybart writes for Above Avalon. “This past Friday, the general public had its first chance to find out what Apple meant as Apple Watch try-on appointments were rolled out. I selected one of the first time slots at my local Apple store as in many ways I was more interested in the way Apple had set up these try-on appointments than actually trying out the device.”
“While I have some constructive criticism and suggestions, I found the entire try-on process enjoyable,” Cybart writes. “Despite following the Apple Watch beat for the past seven months, I still found there to be surprises. I can only imagine how someone not familiar with Apple Watch would likely feel overwhelmed by this new gadget for the wrist.”
“Going into the try-on I thought the Apple Watch Sport will be the most popular model, possibly by a pretty wide margin, and the black and white sports bands will be the most popular bands by a significant number,” Cybart writes. “That view was only reinforced after trying on all of the different options.”

MacDailyNews Take: If you get a chance, watch a few of these Apple Watch try-ons at an Apple Store. Most of the people in these first days, of course, are very interested and understand basically how the Watch works, but every single one of them learns new things during their try-on. Imagine how later customers, those who are not so up on the Watch, but now want one because they see their friends, family, and co-workers Watches, will react. The Watch UI requires a bit of a ramp up; more than the iPhone. It’ll be interesting to see how the, uh… “less technically inclined” deal with Apple Watch. Mom and dad can figure out enough about iPhones and iPads to use them well enough, but Apple Watch? Hmm.
Suffice to say, Apple Retail staff’s hand-holding is going to be crucial for Apple Watch’s success beyond early adopters.
Even better, watch the faces of the people trying on the watch. The joy on their faces is amazing. Priceless!
aside from…
– don’t need to take iPhone out of pocket as much
– health and fitness
… I don’t really “get” the apple watch.
so far, not really all that interested.
This is obviously the first article on Apple Watch that you’ve “read”. How about hailing a cab with the watch, how about all the other possibilities from third party apps? Even the standard apps were enough for me to want to have it. The exciting possibilities from endless third party apps should be enough reason for everyone else.
You don’t have a clue about “everybody else”. You don’t know what “should” and “shouldn’t” be motivating. I don’t lay down cold hard cash for “possibilities”. Wake me when they actually get here, ok?
squiggles is typically more interested in BUN plots and EGG graphs!
Seriously, squiggles, it is not a crime to have little interest in the Apple Watch. If it does not add value to your computing/phone experience, then I support you. Don’t worry about the down votes. You do not have to go with the crowd.
thanks KingMel.
Like everyone else, when I am not pouring over my various BUN plots and EGG graphs, I too am a shameless fanboy.
I am therefore inclined to want to buy and wear the watch.
However, from what I know so far (including looking at the watch firsthand), I just don’t see myself actually using it.
I will, of course, keep an open mind.
Yeah, me neither. As it doesn’t replace anything but merely adds to the number of gadgets I have to have on me or around me, blah. I love people saying how revolutionary it is though, while not reminding us that they still have that iPhone in their pocket or purse or somewhere nearby…
What an idiot. If you don’t like technology and don’t want it around you, why the uck are you reading about technology and commenting on it? Gtfo
Clearly Apple Watch is a different category of product. The iPhone competes with an empty pocket. Having an iPhone is a huge step up from not having one. The watch is an accessory to the iPhone. For busy people it makes using the iPhone easier and less intrusive. Many people won’t have a need for the Apple Watch.
I suspect it will take six months for things to settle down and a bunch of apps to be produced before we see how Apple Watch really fits into our lives.
Early adopters also are a “forgiving” audience as Apple staff sharpen their skills at a new way of selling. My experience was great. I was able to get a try on appointment as a walk in even though the store’s site said all appointments were taken. The next appointment was listed three days in the future..
My wife and I have gone to two Apple stores to view and try on the Watch. Each time we were surprised how much better it looks in person. The design truly grows on you.
I waited 10 minutes to try on the watch I preordered. The Apple Watch truly looks better in person, it was comfortable and surprisingly light. The wait time wasn’t wasted as I got to play at the ⌚️ display.
I ordered at midnight Friday (June delivery…) but had not seen the watch. I was surprised at how beautiful they are. I was very pleasantly surprised at the lightness and the feel of the sport band. I cannot wait to retire my Pebble!
The aesthetics of Apple products is something I take for granted. Seeing the AppleWatch reminded me.
Also, the MacBook 12 inch is amazingly beautiful.
Has anyone found out how the band fits to the watch? Is it a slide off friction fit or a button release?
Button release.
There is a small button that releases the band lock for both end of the band.
Ok, thank you!
I was at the Brea Apple Store this weekend (MacBook Pro Early 2011 graphics card thing) and I was able to try on a watch without an appointment, just a 5 minute wait.
In the front of the store they had a line of watches you could play with, (but not put on) with friendly (not pushy) Apple helpers suggesting things I didn’t know as I played with the working face. The table we’ve all seen in photos with watches behind a glass case was at another part of the store.
Very cool, and no appointment!
I walked into a UK Apple Store 2 days after launch and got an immediate try on appointment. I wasn’t disappointed. The steel version was heavier than I’d expected, but the black Sport model with black strap was just stunning and much lighter. The store staff were well trained and answered every question without hesitation. Hope my June shipping date is brought forward!
I went to the Apple Store today to try on the watch. I arrived full of enthusiasm and expectations, had a very friendly and professional demonstration etc but at the end of the day, I was sadly, not convinced in the least. The watch didn’t feel particularly comfortable on my wrist (sport model), it was much too fiddley and quite honestly more complicated than I expected. Just taking my iphone out of my pocket is a lot easier and efficient. I really don’t see the point of the watch. It doesn’t offer anything special or unique and I don’t think it’s something that facilitates my life; it’s not waterproof and it needs to be charged at the end of every day. My iPhone 6 Plus is absolutely fantastic, the best device I’ve ever owner and does everything I need. I have never owned anything but Apple products since 1986 but at the end of the day my Swatch is what I want on my wrist. I’m really sorry but these are my honest feelings.
