Apple iOS 7 adoption hits 90%, while Google Android 4.4 Kit Kat remains a paltry 8%

“Mobile analytics firm Mixpanel has iOS 7 adoption covering the vast majority of Apple mobile devices, with its real-time adoption stat tracker showing between 88 and 90 percent of devices on the latest major revision of iOS based on hourly browsing data,” Darrell Etherington reports for TechCrunch.

“According to its Android device information, only around 8 percent of those using Google’s mobile OS are using Kit Kat (4.4) or higher,” Etherington reports. ” Apple’s advantage when it comes to fragmentation issues mean less money spent on making sure software works across a range of different OS versions, and it’s something Android still lags considerably with, which is apparent from the current Kit Kat uptake.”

  1. If they changed the kindergarten inspired look of iOS 7 back to an adult looking iOS 6, the adoption rate would shoot up to 100%. iOS 7 just doesn’t cut the mustard in terms of UI design, and my productivity on my iPhone & iPad has actually suffered after transitioning to iOS 7.

It has to be admitted that the bald Brit Jony Ive has not the first idea how to design software. As for Ive being put in charge of defining Human Interface Guidelines, he might as well be put in charge of a classroom full of pre-schoolers for all the good it is doing.

    1. You sound like the morons who bashed the Mac thirty years ago, and called it a “toy”. Making personal attacks against Jony Ive does not do much to make your opinion about iOS 7 worthy of being heard. Go get yourself an Android phone if you don’t like iOS 7 and stop being an ass!

    2. Your mommy is at the top of the stairs yelling. Your Tator Tots were ready 10 minutes ago. Now get off your big fat ass and go eat. I know those stairs are hard for a 400 lb. bachelor loser like you, but one must do what one has to. What’s Samsung paying losers trolls like you to spew nonsense. You should try to get out in the sun dude. Breathing that musty basement apartment air is warping your mind. Take you mommy with you, she loves her 400 lb. Teddy Bear.

    3. Tired of Trolls.

When 90% of your product’s customers are following you and updating closely, you have an absolute roaring hit on your hand and “you’re in the money.”

Tell J.K. Shin your tactic needs to be toned down to be realistic on social media.

  2. This suggests only 8% of Android devices are used by true geeks willing-and-able to figure out how to upgrade their software. The remaining 92% of Android device users are most likely only on an Android device because it is cheaper than an iPhone — or, at least, they think it is. Or they are uninformed consumers.

I would like to see someone do a complete cost-benefit analysis of various smartphones, which includes consideration of: (1) the purchase cost of the phone itself, (2) monthly telecom service fees, and (3) product/service quality differences (ie, manufacturing quality, total life-cycle costs, security and privacy protection, and regarding software upgrade-ability). For those customers who are cost-sensitive, I would be surprised if some iPhone and service combinations were not available that could beat Android phones at almost every price point.

    1. There are probably a lot more factors involved with Android users not upgrading to KitKat. Additionally off the top of my head 1) Carrier has not provided the update 2) Update found to be ‘heavier’ on device and user reverted to prior version 3) Device not compatible with new OS version but still be counted since it accesses the Google Play store 4) Device does not access Google Play for one or more reasons and thus not counted.

Not sure how Apple counts their devices. For all we know they could simply not be including devices still accessing iTunes but considered ‘retired’ thus creating a bias. But that is simply supposition on my part.. Anyone know how Apple determines the number of devices that use each version of iOS?

  3. IOS 7.1 ROCKS. I looked at the last version of 6.x the other day and it looked DATED, albeit still wonderful.
One platform to develop against and still hit 90%?
    Priceless.

    1. Yea I agree, I used iOS 7 and the first few days during beta and I hated it and said Apple was making a mistake. After a those few days and looking at iOS 6, it was hard to go back. iOS6 does look outdated now and is getting better with small enhancements here and there like with iOS 7.1.

    2. Yeah, I gotta agree. I was undecided about the new phone interface until I saw it in action. Now I love it. Slide the green phone icon to answer, at which point it rotates, changes color, and becomes the “hang up” icon. That’s really easy to understand and looks cool too.

  4. If I could I’d go back to iOS 6 but Apple won’t let me.
    I’m not into Hello Kitty.
The replies the first poster got to his perfectly reasonable objection to the enforced ‘update’ is par for the course. In other words, those who like iOS 7 are mostly cretins who respond to others’ opinions with contempt and puerile idiocy.
Give this comment 1 star if you agree that iOS 7 sucks.

    1. People responded to the first post the way they did because those of us who frequent this site are tired of the same twaddle day in and day out from this person. Even if I DIDN’T like iOS 7, I wouldn’t want to read the same whining on every single iOS7-related article. A second reason is that this same person clearly does not understand the difference between fact and opinion, which he/she should have learned in 7th grade or thereabouts, and it’s painful watching this person exhibit ignorance on a daily basis.

    2. I think people are objecting the the puerile idiocy of going on and on and on and on…. and on about how terrible iOS 7 is.

We’re not going to get back the faux leather and green felt.

The first response by DustyMac was not contemptuous:
“Things keep changing. accept it and move on.”
Pretty much says it all, right there.

      Neither was the next response:
      “More like 9999 out of a 10000 aren’t bothered”

macxperts, on the other hand, came across like a nasty little 14-year-old. Unnecessary, and lacking in actual points. But the point is made. We’re tired of hearing the boring refrain.

        1. Wrong.
20 yr Apple user with 14 devices in one house.
iOS 7 appeals to wankers like you that think like a f-ing drone. Not everyone that hates the new look is a ‘shill’ you dumb twat.

        2. Judging from your puerile language, I doubt you’re old enough to be a 20-year Apple user.
If you really are, I’d suggest you grow up and get away from the schoolyard swearing. It adds nothing to your point and merely discredits anything you say.

  5. 7 is immature looking and confusing to young and old alike. Namely my retired mother and young niece. No one was confused by version 6 and it remains the gold standard in usability with thicker lines and fonts aiding legibility. The design pinnacle of SJ’s career headed toward the trash can. Silly and stupid move.

    1. You do realize that about a hundred million people don’t agree with you.
      – There is NOTHING happening remotely like the storm that sank Vista and sent Microscum scrabbling to fix that pile of broke rubbish. THERE – IS – NO general public outcry.
      – There is nothing happening like the thundering indifference that greeted Zune.
      – There is nothing like the exodus that is in process of sinking Blackberry.

You clearly represent a minority view.

      1. Maybe or maybe not, John Smith.

I have not seen stories or polls to suggest that 100 million people absolutely LOVE 7 over 6.

Adoption rate is a forced metric offering no choice of visual skins for the KING of “Think Different” companies.

And judging by all the consistent comments admitting the tepid acceptance, of the visually starved iOS7 initially, now after time passed I’m used to it. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

I’ll bet the farm if a poll was taken and the question of visual design leading to clear OS understanding 6 would win handily.

So, I will continue to enjoy tanned faux leather, solid oak bookshelves, beautiful emerald green felt and other magnificent designs from Steve until Apple renders me obsolete.

        And you sir, enjoy 7.
