Moved to Chrome a year ago. Much better than Safari, in my opinion.
Yikes… Chrome has been nothing but worse.
Yeah, it needs more polishing…
Never touch that abomination.
tried Chrome several times; gave up on it every time.
Well, good for you! I’m sure Google appreciates the fact that you’ve volunteered your browsing data to their global domination efforts. 😉
I downloaded Chrome once, tried it a bit before deleting it – later, I noticed a launchd thingy still lurking in my system, scraping who knows what information from my system and sending it to Google. Deleted *that*, and have no desire to ever touch Chrome again.
Safari and its extensions are quite excellent and work for my browsing needs.
I may be incorrect, but I am fairly certain “launchd” is the program responsible for brining up all the other “deamons” (unix programs that run in the background (ftpd, afpd(afp server), httpd(web server), screend(or whatever(starts the screensaver)))
but if your machine still boots then it was probably malware
Stephen’s right… launchd is a low-level system component provided by Apple.
launchd is a daemon that runs at startup and is responsible for configuring the OS.
The fact that your Mac didn’t require a system reinstall is quite amazing.
I’m with you JG. It’s hard for me to do without the unibar and the syncing features of chrome. Plus I love the frequent updates. I’ve found it to be very stable and I’m on the dev channel.
Chrome is a nightmare.
Amen… I use Safari whenever I want to see multicoloured circular objects, when I want to surf the web, Chrome.
By the way, I had drinks with an Apple Hardware engineer a couple nights ago.. and he was using Chrome too.
I’ve also had a very *GOOD* experience with Chrome. Safari is just annoyingly slow. Even coming to this website, Chrome blasts it out in a second and slows down on the ads. Safari seems to have more trouble with numerous open connections, i.e. content and ads from multiple sources, than other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. I tend to put up with Safari until I get suspicious something is wrong with my computer. Then I try Chrome and Firefox and see that everything is ok, then go back to wondering why, even after today’s update, Safari is so pokey.
Also, to this day, browsing on Windows is faster than browsing on a Mac. I have two MacBook Pros in front of me right now. One is the previous CORE I7 2.66 dual core. I have it running Windows 7. The one I’m typing on now is the new 2011 quad CORE I7, under OS X 10.6.6. Safari… SAFARI MIND YOU, displays faster on the Windows machine than it does on the OS X machine. When I shift to Chrome under Windows or Firefox under windows, no contest.
When I run speedtests under speakeasy.net, for instance, Safari can muster up 15, 16Mb/s (wireless) while Chrome give me the full 20Mb/s. Someday I really have to dig into why.
I like Safari. I just think it’s about time it kept up.
Chrome is crap.
Now if Apple could just fix Flash – it is the only thing that crashes Safari and slows it down..
I know you will say use Click2Flash but that is a pain too..
Ahhhh, that would be Adobe’s job.
I used Click2Flash for a while. Then I just deleted Flash altogether. Haven’t missed it.
After a recent attempt at using Safari again, I also ended up just deleting Flash. Safari still crashed like a dog. Couldn’t figure it out, so I’m back to OmniWeb sneaky peeks as my main browser and Chrome for Flash items. Chrome is remarkably stable on my system but too Google-y for everyday usage. OW has its own issues but the individual site pref’s feature is hard to give up. Maybe Safari will fix its memory leakage/instability problems someday… or not. Just doen’t work right for me, which is unfortunate as I like the Reader feature.
I won’t dispute what you say — I’ve had my share of problems with computers that no one else seemed to have.
But I keep my machine on (except for sleep) and Safari open 24/7 and haven’t had a Safari crash since I removed Flash (maybe 5 months ago.)
(OmniWeb was my browser of choice up until Safari came out. Glad to hear they’re still around.)
Flash!? What is Flash?
I disagree. Donkey Kong is the best video game ever.
Must be time for Black Hat.
Wonder if they got this update out in time for the Pwn2Own contest, which starts today.

They changed the rules. Instead of using a system with all current patches, they froze the configuration a month ago. Thereby, indicating even further that this is NOT a security display, it’s a place to get a lot of publicity (on the second day because NONE of the systems fail on the first day anymore… The day where the machine is configured most like your system at home).
Pwn2Own, that’s what I meant.
Without any other changes, Safari 5.04 loads same sites faster than 5.03. And it didn’t crash. Progress++.
I installed iTunes 10.2.1 last night and noticed that Sun Spider times in Safari dropped by 50%, nearly on par with Chrome 10. Today I installed Safari 5.0.4. UI responsiveness in Safari is noticably better, especially when opening and closing tabs.
Anyone else notice this?
My problem is that Safari uses tons of Memory and VMemory, over 1GB. Why? Doesn’t seem to have changed. Also mds is using 800MB of VM, and SIMBL Agent is using 300MB of VM. Anyone know why?
mds is “metadata search”, aka Spotlight. It always uses a lot of VM because it’s holding your search index in memory. That’s normal. It’s normal for Safari with quite a few tabs to take up a gig of VM too, that’s all the rendered page content, decompressed images etc. sitting in RAM.
Thanks. I figured it must be normal, but it seems to be more than in the old days.
Safari crashes….really, I haven’t noticed that….it must be pilot error. I do use ClicktoFlash and don’t miss Flash at all. I didn’t do it because of crashes I use it to see what all the hub-bub was about and as usual the anti Apple FUD is just smoke…
Updated. Now hopefully Safari won’t crash at least once a day, resetting to factory defaults each time. (And no, it is not overloaded with extensions. It has AdBlock, Click2Flash, Facebook Share, and Twitter for Safari, which isn’t even enabled.)
in reality (any situation), Safari is way slower. I can’t stand anymore. I deleted it 8 months ago. I never used this garbage. Chrome is all the way up. it’s the best browser you have ever experienced. I use developer version. chrome has web store, too. you can install web based apps mostly (90%) for free just like chrome OS. if you don’t know what I talk, then shut up. you don’t know how the worst safari is.
I love the smell of astroturf in the morning. That smell, that losing smell. It smells like…defeat.
“A fix for an issue that could cause a Screen Saver to appear while video is playing in Safari”
Gotta win the prize for most bizarre bug fix – EVAR!
I just amazed at the people who click on a post about safari only to read it and then comment that: “I use Chrome, it’s way better.” Good for you why don’t you find some Chrome posting on the net to place your comment. I would hope that Safari users would be the only ones chiming in about an improve or lack of improved performance of the update. I’m a Safari user and I was hoping to get feedback from the Safari users who visit MDN.
This is pretty usual. Q: I have a problem with xxxx. A: Buy/use yyyy… Can still remember C64/Sinclair Spectrum discussions like that. Irl or web no different.
This is about the only Apple thing left that still has PowerPC code in it.
My G5 tower is happy, so is my PowerBook.
Switched to Chrome this summer and haven’t looked back! I’ll even use FireFox 4 before returning to Safari. The only time I’ll use Safari is to watch the videos of Apple Keynotes that they hold everyone hostage and force you to use Safari.

Since 1 week, Safari 5.0.4 crashes like hell. Start it up, wait or browse for 60sec, it crashes.
F***ing application. Getting back to FireFox now. This one is runnign stable at least.
Installed 5.0.4, I want back on Safari 4 and I think I’ll just do that in the next minutes.
