Introducing Apple’s revolutionary iPad Smart Cover for iPad 2 (with video)

Apple’s revolutionary iPad Smart Cover was made for iPad 2. And vice versa.

iPad Smart Cover attaches magnetically and aligns perfectly to protect the iPad display. Open it and your iPad wakes instantly. Close it, and your iPad goes to sleep automatically.

And it folds into the perfect watching and typing stand. It’s one great idea on top of another:

  1. I’m torn. This new cover is definitely cool, but there is a trade off. I have an iPad 1 with Apple cover, which I love, works and fits great, feels great, doubles as a stand, and I don’t use the dock, so I don’t have to take it out. ON THE OTHER HAND, I like to take it out to show people how sleek and beautiful it is. But the case is tight and the iPad doesn’t just slip in and out easily, so I have to fiddle with it to get it out. But my iPad is protected and pristine.

This new design displays the beauty of the iPad 2, but the back is exposed. I think I would have a fit if I ever scratched it. I love the magnet idea, and the fold-it-up stand. If I upgrade, I’ll definitely get one of these covers… but I would have to get a Zagg shield or Ghost Armor for the back, or else I would go gray with worry…

    1. I’m a total believer in the original case. I never take mine out aside from occasionally cleaning it. That said, what I like about the original case as opposed to a lot of the aftermarket cases is that it’s such a minimalist affair. The magnetic case looks even more so, but I think it’ll come down to how it feels in the hand and how well the magnet setup works.

    2. Replaced the rusted 1998 F-250 rims back with original, I’m an “original” type guy, I like factory speced …. So I will probably get leather but will visit Apple Store to decide …..

The back not being protected is a concern, but, the iPad is a pass me down device, to grandkids, and the one I am using looks great …. If I get honest wear on the bottom, I’m ok with that ….. Should I need a bottom protector then in will have to shop aftermarket but me no worry about that bridge until I come to it …..

  2. Actually, I think the cover has such “wow” appeal that it will boost the Apple brand mindshare as to Apple’s overall design prowess, cleverness, and coolness. This simple thing, though relatively unimportant to the core utility of the device, will none-the-less increase sales of the iPad2, and other Apple gadgets EVEN if the customer opts not to buy the cover. And the thing that will drive the point home is this video. The video, and the timing of the music just so powerfully communicates the cleverness of the cover and Apple in general.

  3. It definitely scores high on the cool scale but…….
None of the videos show the thing laying flat against the back of the device.

In other words all the vids I have seen show a little triangle thingie hanging off the end. If you have a little triangle thingie hanging off the left side, how do you hold it one handed in the left hand (like I do my current iPad)?

If it won’t lay flat against the back then that means you have to remove it. If you remove it what do you do with it? If you take it off it is now something you will lose.

Also the vids show the iPad being propped in landscape (is landscape the right term for wide view?) What if you wanna prop the device up in portrait????

    1. If you look careful when if gets all folded up and they tilt it up near vertical, you can see that it will go flat on the back as well. I also saw a pic on a Mac|Life post that seems to have it flat to the back.

As to propping up the iPad in portrait, the Apple case for the iPad 1 isn’t very good at that either, so I guess the dock will be for that. Plus the new cover design will mean the dock will be accessible with no problem!!

      1. I missed that. Thx..

True, but it does do it. Actually to me this isn’t a big deal as you stated the iPad1 and case doesn’t do it very well, so I almost never do it.

        Thx again for the info.

      2. No, I think the photo on MacLife referenced by DMac depicts the case in its ‘triangle’ folded-back state; it’s just the dark colour of the case and the stark lighting in the photo mask it.
I love the new cover, but I would also echo G’s question about whether or not it folds back flat against the back of the iPad when fully opened. Looks like you’d have the metal hinge sticking out, at best. At worst, if it’s magnetic, it might keep coming away in that position. Hmmm. Will have to get my paws on one to try it out!

  4. I am immortal. You will all face me someday. Steve will just be hanging out with me a bit sooner- like in a few weeks. I’m sorry he won’t be able to reveal the iPhone 5 for you guys.

Thomas- watch your driving in the next few weeks. “Randian”- your parents say hello.

The poster is a narcissist of the extreme kind – classic schoolboy who didnt get laid.

A little less mirror time, a LOT less masturbation, and a steady job will help the problem.
