The critics are losing the Apple price argument

Apple Online Store“On this week’s episode of The Tech Night Owl LIVE, we talk with Laptop magazine’s Avram Piltch about Apple’s spanking new MacBook Air,” Gene Steinberg reports for Tech Night Owl. “Along with reports that the product may already be flying off the shelves, particularly the 11.6-inch version, the early reviews are nothing short of spectacular.”

“Piltch, who is certainly no ardent fan of Apple, has high praise for this revision of this sexy thin and light notebook, and it’s not just the performance factor,” Steinberg reports. “You see, compared to other notebooks that use solid state storage, the Air is actually priced competitively. It may even be cheaper than some of the generic PC alternatives, simply because Apple is able to get the best price on flash memory.”

Steinberg reports, “With a base price of $999, the entry-level MacBook Air may not be the cheapest notebook on the planet, but the designs that come closest cost even more.”

“Now take a look at the promised iPad killers that are slowly coming to market. Some companies are tying them in to two-year data plans with wireless carriers to make them seem less expensive, but soon as you add up the price of admission — particularly in the months where Wi-Fi access is sufficient for you — you’ll find that the iPad is a much better deal,” Steinberg reports.

  1. “At least the MBA can play video without stuttering… something your little Atom based processor cannot do consistently.”

Your experience must have been on Windows netbook running anti-virus in the background, my Ubuntu netbook plays Hulu Flash 380p 16:9 about 6 x 5″ image smoothly over cable over encrypted wireless network.

Remember, that’s streaming Flash, AND AES decryption, AND video. Not bad for a Atom with integrated graphics if you sit down and think about it. If I drop the encryption, I can watch full screen. No stuttering.

It’s a $290 netbook, not dual core $999 11″ MBA. Really if one is going to spend that kind of money and want to watch a lot of on line video, a decent 15″ anti-glare screen on a MacBook Pro with a 500 GB 7,200 RPM drive would be better expenditure of money.

10-11″ screen size computers are supposed to be inexpensive and nearly disposable or else why have them?

  3. “…I DO wish they were less expensive up front. But I wish that about everything I’ve ever bought.” —kneugent

Somebody finally speaks the simple truth: Everyone always wants everything to cost less. The difference is that some people will pay more to get a good product, and some people settle for crap in order to get a rock-bottom price. You get what you pay for, and you deserve what you get.

  5. you must have bought every extra possible to get a MBP up to $3000…or you just made up a big number.

I forgot how much I paid for it exactly, it was in that neighborhood by the time 7.5% tax and AppleCare was thrown in.

It’s been a very good machine, runs 6 other operating systems, but it’s a beast and a nice inexpensive, secure Ubuntu netbook has been pretty nice light weight alternative to firing up that 15″ MBP beast.

This is why I don’t understand the $999 11″ MBA concept, it’s a netbook size screen and keyboard, but a oh too powerful dual core and too hefty a price tag for netbook type uses.

I think Apple is just taking people for a ride because people want the 10-11″ screen. But $999? Jesus that’s a lot of money.

  7. Personally, I consider the MacBook Air more of an UltraLight Laptop, as opposed to a Netbook.

It is actually a very competitive price compared to other UltraLights.

    Apples and Oranges.

  9. @Mark Bizzarro;

If the Air shipped with a fuzzy matte screen, I wouldn’t buy one. I’ve got a 17 glossy, a 17 matte, a 13 MacBook glossy and an (last generation) Air. The only laptop I don’t use is the 17 matte and the only reason I don’t use it is because of its screen.

In other words? Your opinion sucks.

  11. Bizzaro is a plant to help MDN pay their electric bill.

    IGNORE

The MacBook Air is a notebook.
    The iPad is Apple’s “netbook”.

BTW: My 15″ MacBook Pro cost $2830, before AppleCare. Sales tax doesn’t count.
    Config: 2.66GHz i7, 8GB RAM, 500GB x 7200 rpm HD, hi-res anti-glare screen, Mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor

    No, YOUR opinion sucks. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue wink” style=”border:0;” />
SELL that MBP if you don’t like it!

Seriously, who cares enough about others’ preference in monitors to fling insults?

OK look, there is no hope in Hades that an intel N450 coupled with GMA 3150 graphics can REMOTELY compare to a C2D with a GeForce 320M, no matter the OS, no hope, DO NOT PASS GO, PERIOD. If that configuration works for you, well then you win, be sure to pat yourself on the back (have fun with that 3 cell battery too)
So you`re one of three people..

    1. You`re a kid who spent the summer mowing lawns and you bought yourself a netbook with your earnings, gratz.
    2. You are short bus seat warmer who thinks milk comes from cats and honestly think you`re getting the deal of a lifetime.
    3. You are a troll.

    I`m thinking its a combo of 2 and 3.
