iPhone 4 Accessories “Apple has yet to find a fix for flaws with the iPhone 4’s proximity sensor, according to one of the company’s Australian spokespeople, Fiona Martin,” MacNN reports.

“Normally the sensor detects when an iPhone is next to a person’s face, and shuts off the touchscreen to prevent people from accidentally tapping onscreen buttons,” MacNN explains. “In some cases the sensor is failing, potentially leading to interrupted calls.”

MacNN reports, “Apple is currently working on iOS 4.1, which could be released as soon as this week to support new iPods.”

MacDailyNews Take: We’ve been using 4.1 beta since the first release and we see no proximity sensor issues on our iPhone 4 units. Of course, we didn’t see any proximity sensor issues before moving to 4.1 beta, so fat lot of good we are on this one. Are you having issues with your iPhone 4’s proximity sensor?

  1. Yes! I disabled facetime so it wouldn’t launch into it which changes to speakerphone. Now it will only accidentally mute.

I tend to use it in the left hand, and don’t remember it happening in the righ hand. I think it might be the way the sensor lines up with the ear canal on that side.

Also, I don’t understand why facetime isn’t disabled automatically when the phone doesn’t have a wifi connection. Why attempt to launch in the first place? (at least until it’s supported)

  2. I’ve had MAJOR ISSUES with my proximity sensor on my iPhone 4. In addition to all the issues being mentioned (e.g. “face-dialing”), I’ve even go so far as to add a new contact full of random numbers and letters in the name field. This is the only part of my phone that I don’t like. Looking forward to the 4.1 fix.

  3. @Macinfo,

“For those with a constant problem, stop whining, bring it back and get a replacement, slews of others are not having a problem..”

MDN’s question was, “Are you having issues with your iPhone 4’s proximity sensor?”

They asked, we answered. Stop being a self-righteous moron and move on to another post.

    Idiot.

  4. I’ve had proximity sensor issues with iOS4 and iOS4.1 beta.

Many of my friends are reporting proximity sensor issues as well.

Problems include hanging up while on a call, putting call on mute and speaker.

  5. Yes I have had a lot of issues. Some times it acts like I am touching one of the number keys when I hold it against my face, sometimes it just turns off like I hit the “end call” button.

  6. I have returned 2 iphone 4’s because of the sensor. And wouldn’t you know the third one is doing the same thing. In the past 2 months I have 1. dialed numbers, 2. muted the call, 3. requested facetime, 4. conferenced my aunt in on a call with my wife, 5. changed my ringtone, 6. put others on hold, 7. abruptly ended calls, 8. browsed the web, 9. changed my audio source.

ALL WITH MY FACE DURING A CALL.

This needs to be fixed. I love the phone, but have now decided to use speakerphone for my calls. It is great for everything else, but this has to change.

  7. The proximity issues have been a total nightmare for me and EVERY single one of my friends with an iPhone 4. You put the phone anywhere hear skin while on a call and it’s a non-stop tirade of either BEEP BEEP BEEP, muting you, ending the call etc.
    I can’t believe Steve let this out like this. It’s a disgrace! (But everything else is wonderful) ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> /me strokes my 32GB iPhone4

  8. I have had the same issues with my iPhone screen even after the screen repair. I am very upset that Apple has not completed it’s normal level of R&D on the iPhone 4. I went back to my 3GS because this screen problem was bothering me so much. Thank goodness I went to http://www.iphone3gscreenrepair to get my iPhone 3GS repaired, or else I would just have to live with my phone making calls and going to speaker phone at random times.
