Apple: Apple TV 3.0 users should update to version 3.0.1 immediately

Apple’s Apple TV Team has sent out an email advising Apple TV to upgrade immediately:

If you’ve installed the Apple TV 3.0 software update, you should immediately update to version 3.0.1. This prevents content from temporarily disappearing until it is resynced.

To update your Apple TV software:
1. Reboot your Apple TV (unplug the power cord and plug it back in)
2. Select Settings > General from the main menu
3. Select Update Software
4. Select Download and Install

Note: Your Apple TV will conduct a restart, which is followed by the Apple logo and a status bar.

Content disappearing would not have affected me though. I have my old Powerbook pulling iTunes server duties with a 500GB hard drive attached. So all music and movies are streamed to the Apple TV.

I just did the update. The only content that was left on my Apple TV was photos. All the movies, music and music videos were gone. I stream most of the time since I have the original 40 Gb model, anyway. iTunes is now re-syncing the music and music videos. I’m not bothering to sync the movies since it doesn’t hold enough. Streaming the movies is much more efficient. I wish I could connect a hard drive! Someday…

I did the update without any issues. It “seems” to resolve another issue that 3.0 was giving me where the screen graphics would get garbled up a bit when I scanned down my music list. Seems to be resolved in 3.01. Anyone else had this issue?

I’ve been having several issues since updating. I use the AppleTV everyday so I was very disappointed. I had actually been trying to figure out how to roll back to Version 2! Hope this fixes all of my issues!! Love the AppleTV!!

Will do this tomorrow. My unit has been acting buggy since updating to 3.0. It will not consistently stay connected via wireless to my iTunes. Just today I was wondering if there was an update. Hopefully this will fix the buggy performance I’ve been experiencing.

Since version 3.0, we’ve noticed some occasional video tearing at the bottom of the screen on some rented movies. Both HD and widescreen.

Hope 3.0.1 fixes this..

Other than that, we generally like the new direction of the interface.

Nice QA, Apple! A real bang-up job! The YouTube viewer was buggy and crashed the AppleTV repeatedly, and now all my content is completely gone. What is this, a Microsoft product?!??

Time to drag out the archive DVDs. Oh well, I guess there was nothing better I had to do for a couple of hours tomorrow. Grrrrrrrrr…

I wrote to soon. After I updated and rebooted, the content all seems to be there. But, the menu seems to hang inexplicably for 10-20 seconds.

Will updating to 3.01 allow me to:

1) hook up external hard drives directly to AppleTV and browse them?
2) view divx files without first transcoding them to mp4?
3) watch hulu from my AppleTV
4) let me use AppleTV to browse directories on my macs?
5) let me access network shared drives using Samba?

(You know, all the stuff Tiger could do without being specifically crippled by Apple?)

5) stop AppleTV from becoming unresponsive for five minutes every time I access a shared library?

If not, I guess AppleTV will just remain the least-used piece of Apple equipment I’ve every had…

I didn’t have problems with my content on 3.0. It may have to do with it though that I had to reset my Apple TV to factory settings. My Apple TV is hooked up to a projector and I had already turned off the projector when Apple TV asked me to update to the new version. Usually I turn off my Apple TV by holding down the MENU button for three seconds to go to the basic menu and then hold down the play/pause button for three seconds to have Apple TV go to standby. And then I unplug it so save power*.Well, if the update message is showing this doesn’t work and I accidentally pushed the power switch. My projector was already off and so I could not see what Apple TV tried to tell me. I think I must have started the update process already by accident and so I had to do a factory reset and upload all my content again. Maybe this is why I didn’t see any problems that were described since the content on my Apple TV was loaded with version 3.0 and not an earlier version.
*I measured one time the power consumption of the Apple TV. On (but I don’t remember if it was playing a movie) it consumed 22 W. On standby it still consumed 18 W which is huge. Modern devices usually use less than 1 W or really just like between 0.1 and 0.3 W. I suppose there will be a new Apple TV coming next year early in the year since the current Apple TV does not correspond to the European power consumption conformity that starts in 2010.

I’ve meen using it for ages. You just need a USB memory stick and you can put SSH, FTP, AFP, Perian for all your codec needs, Boxee, XBMC, even a Webkit based web browser.

I’ve been using it now for about a year. Makes mt AppleTV a far more useful piece of kit.

OpJ … we get your point. This is, essentially, a re-purposed Mac mini and it’s disappointing to have so many features – features that could <b>obviously/b> be useful to the owner of such a device – hidden from the user.
Every feature on your list would add a menu item and add to potential confusion. This device was not intended for use as a “computer”, was not marketed as having those features available, so Apple has not broken any promises to you over them. Disappointed your expectations? Fine. YOUR problem.

See dlmeyer, the problem is that unlike a lot of mdn fanboys I don’t live in Steve jobs rectum living on a steady diet of his shit pellets. There are things the appletv is perfectly capable of doing, that tiger is perfectly capable of doing, and that would greatly increase the utility and popularity of the device. These aren’t things that apple would have had to add to apple tv, these are things that apple had to take out. Moreover each software update by apple erases attempts by others to restore functionality native to tiger and the hardware the appletv is made from.

Fine, be happy sucking Steve’s dick, and enjoy his hobby. Personally, I think the apple suckups around here would deride any other company for the same behavior.
