Wall Street chatter: Microsoft to buy Electronic Arts?

“Shares of Electronic Arts Inc. jumped more than 4 percent to $19.36 on Wednesday on unsubstantiated talk that Microsoft Corp. might be interested in buying the video game publisher, traders said,” Ellis Mnyandu reports for Reuters.

“A London-based trader also cited similar talk as making rounds in Europe. Microsoft shares were up 0.9 percent at $26 on Nasdaq,” Mnyandu reports.

Apple needs to buy some game developers. With iPhone and iTouch in the minds of the populace as they currently are, the timing is perfect for Apple to get serious about gaming.

How does it make financial sense to buy a gaming powerhouse that makes games for every platform, and then immediately castrate it by restricting it to Microsoft platforms only? That would be the mother of all stupid decisions.

Remember, Bungie was still a small company when Microsoft bought them. Restricting them to XBox development didn’t mean cutting them off at the knees.

If this happens (and that’s a big “if”), the only change I’d see happening would be that EA would be forced to pursue Zune development.

This would be the killing of a leading industry innovator and the motive is probably to screw Apple by removing a big player from the field, but it will agitate others besides Apple too…

If you need to think twice about your AAPL because of this, you really don’t know or understand Apple, Steve Jobs or the sectors Apple is king in.

When We think in the Xbox immediately comes Bungie, Bungie is synonym of the Xbox and it was a Mac developer that Apple didn’t take seriously, now that Apple is pitching the iPod Touch as a mobile gaming platform is URGENTLY to have some Exclusive titles for the Touch and the only way to get them is buying a Games developer. There are a tons of good games developers out there, Sega, Atari, even Electronic Arts if not bought by MSFT or maybe licensed their technology and create a new Gaming Division inside Apple, but Apple needs to move a little FASTER in the game segment or will get burned by Microsoft money.

Apple – take a $B or two and spin off an applications/games division. Hire up all of the great talent that is either out of work or ready to jump ship from M$ and other developers. Let the division go to work on generating a core set of apps/games that cannot be threatened by anyone, especially M$.

Now that Bungie has escaped from the Dark Side of the Farce, perhaps they would be interested in some type of deal with Apple?
