Why Apple is building their chip dream team

“What does Steve Jobs want with all those chip guys? One goal of CEO Steve Jobs is pretty clear–developing powerful, energy-efficient microchips for its iPhone, iPod touch and other future devices. Postings by Apple’s recent hires on the Web site LinkedIn include plenty of people who previously worked at cellphone chip makers, such as Texas Instruments and Qualcomm. There are plenty of references to power reduction in Apple’s job postings–spanning both hardware and software technologies–on its Web site and those gathered by search site,” Yukari Iwatani Kane blogs for The Wall Street Journal.

“Another likely direction, based on recent hires, is combining low-power technology circuitry for managing graphics and video, which would give it advantages in smartphones and other products. People familiar with Apple’s plans say it is also developing new devices with bigger screens that will make it easier to play games, watch movies or read electronic books, and those products would also require a powerful chip with good battery life,” Kane reports.

“There are also postings that relate to designing and testing high-performance microprocessors in general–not necessarily low-power models for pocket-sized devices. One chip-industry veteran advises not to assume that Apple’s internal chips might not wind up in more conventional computers. ‘Apple is a master of misdirection,’ he says,” Kane reports.
