@ Towertone!
Thats good news…
Happy 4th, all!
Thanks, Bluefin!
And Kris, I have often had that same dream. Not that it will ever happen, but it is still fun to imagine…..
I don’t see the United States as a bastion of Freedom and Liberty. I don’t see any country in this light, even my own. What I see is cynical, power hungry, vacuous leaders handing out platitudes and money while they do all they can to remove more of our rights and remove more of our natural heritage, while gaining greater power for themselves. And we divorce ourselves further and further from the democratic process. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. We, the public, have fallen asleep as the wheel or walked away from our task because they, the politicians, all seem like a waste of time and effort. Guess we got what we deserve.
Just remember though: patriotism is the last bastion of the tyrant.
“We, the public, have fallen asleep as the wheel or walked away from our task because they, the politicians, all seem like a waste of time and effort. Guess we got what we deserve.”
So get up off your fat lazy apathetic welfare state ass and run for political office.
I also say thank you to Jocko for that reminder about America’s Founding Fathers.
And I agree that we have lost and are continuing to lose many freedoms they sacrificed for and believed in. I suspect that some out there will not have learned from history and may not see the comparisons to certain stances of Stalinist Russia and pre-WWII Germany in the direction the U.S. has been heading. Children are being told to turn in parents. Police can whisk you away for telling jokes. A streaker at a high school football game is made to register for life as a sex offender. A teacher with an angel on her desk is called on the carpet for violating separation of church and state. Religious believers in general have been under attack for years with some wanting to abolish the national motto on U.S. currency and strip God from all public places. Enormous numbers find themselves in prison for violation of questionable laws or with severe punishments not fitting their crimes. Too many are innocent altogether. The. U.S. is an embarrassment internationally by unilaterally withdrawing from treaties or simply ignoring treaties already signed. Its word has been worthless not only in recent years, but for many, many years before that. Violation of agreements with native America groups is but one of many examples. The judicial system, including the Supreme Court, has been out of hand for years. Many times the courts have overturned legitimate votes by the people for one thing or another. The “right” to Privacy has no meaning at all, again in violation of the Constitution’s 9th and 10th amendments and many state constitutions. People are deprived of property and their own freedom at the whim of individuals, including TSA, with no due process at all. Although the Declaration of Independence says that “all” men are created equal, that apparently only applies to Americans as we can witness at Guantanamo and in many places throughout the world, and even within the U.S. itself.
Jocko was right to bring up the sacrifices of the Founding Fathers. What is happening today was not what they had intended.
For continued violations of their deeply held beliefs, the current U.S. president does rank among the worst in U.S. history. (I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I find all the candidates bad.) Under him, the Patriot Act stopped just short of setting up secret police. The banking act forces bank employees to turn you in as well as other employees for an off-handed comment or a plethora of other innocent actions. And you’d never know it.
As years go by, generations accept all this as normal and justify their loss of freedoms using the “justifications” of the government. They no longer remember what freedoms they had. Many in Nazi Germany also accepted the rationale they were told by their government. Fortunately many did not, though far too few to stop what was to come. Seemingly little things now portend far worse in the future.
The Founding Fathers correctly had a distrust of government and tried to build in protections against that government. Today, that government maintains that it is exempt from such “protections” but instead places some of those same controls on its own People. For many people who see a trend in what has been happening for years, even prior to the current president, they have become rightfully scared of what is to come and for threats to their own safety and security from their own government.
As imperfect as some today think they were, wrongly judging them by today’s standards, not theirs, we thank the Founding Fathers for their dreams and sacrifices. That is what is remembered on America’s Independence Day. That is what should be remembered.
@The Moron who wrote this:
‘So get up off your fat lazy apathetic welfare state ass and run for political office.’
Such a towering intellect you possess. Too cowardly to even attach your name on it. Then I can understand that, given the profundity of that remark. You’re of those whose simplistic, idiotic and xenophobic stupidity serves only the obfuscate reasoned comment because it’s seemingly beyond your intellect and minimal life experience to offer a truly constructive opinion. So, when you’ve got something of value to say, I’m sure we’d be happy to hear it. But this nonsense is an insult to all that read it.
However I do understand you right to make it. Shame you waste a precious thing like freedom of speech on spreading dross like this.
“Too cowardly to even attach your name on it.”
So your parents called you PT? Sad.
So get up off your fat lazy apathetic HYPOCRITICAL welfare state ass and run for political office.
“Under him, the Patriot Act stopped just short of setting up secret police. “
You are aware that Congress not the President passed the patriot act? Right?
Comparisons with Nazi Germany and Russia show a complete ignorance of life in either. Perhaps you should go live in Mexico or any other 3rd world country of your choice for a year or two and then come back and tell us how terribly persecuted you are in America.
“You are aware that Congress not the President passed the patriot act? Right? “
A careful parsing of words is evidently all some need to absolve the President of the responsibility for what was done with the “Patriot Act” in his administration.
I guess that allows you to think he’s still doing a heck of a job. The lapdogs of fear that we still have as a congress is still no excuse for what our “Decider” does.
Somehow with this guy the buck never actually stops at his desk.
But I agree, telling him to go try life in some third world country is a good idea. If he moved to a modern state, he might like it…
I bet you don’t realize the irony in the idea that you had to bring up 3rd world countries? If you and the boy just above you have to use straw men to make your point look good, then you are in big trouble and that is not helping our country.
Oh yeah and God Bless Macintosh!

Unbelievable. I’m amazed at the sheer volume of utter tripe posted under what amounts to a greeting card from the MDN folks. The constant mindless repetition of talking-points, the juvenile insults, the lack of any evidence of thought is disheartening.
Mercutio: “A plague o’ both your houses!”
Prince: “See, what a scourge is laid upon your hate,
… all are punish’d.”
@Hm…
Luckily I don’t ever meet anyone in the meat world that talks like this, Its just silly fun.
If anyone believes that opinions are changed by what is said here, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell them.
In my life my work is good, my kids are good, my friends are good, but it sounds like a Civil/uncivil War on MDN. So guess which has the most weight in my world?
I play on MDN and when I stop, my world is still good. Sparring is a sport and nothing more. Now I’m going to watch a movie, mow the lawn and then I’ll be back next week.
And GOD Bless Macintosh, Steve Jobs, and especially Ballsmer for the job he’s doing at Microsoft.
And since it looks like this thread is slowing down… the President is a poopie head.
“A careful parsing of words is evidently all some need to absolve the President of the responsibility for what was done with the “Patriot Act” in his administration.”
No, a basic understanding of the Constitution and the separation of powers so wisely put in place by the founding fathers should be necessary before blaming “The President” (whoever they may be) for all bad in the country. It’s particularly ignorant to blame “The President” for the passage of any law. In the end “The President” they can only choose to rubber stamp Congress’s law, or to send the law back to have Congress override their veto or re-write it. He can’t in any way write or change or modify the the law. The Supreme Court (yes the 3rd branch of government which keeps things in balance with the other two) slapped Bill Clinton on the wrist when he started trying to do exactly that.
Republicans, Democrats, the vast majority of the members of Congress voted for the Patriot Act. Why? Because their polling showed them it is what the people wanted after 9/11. Their polling showed that the people wanted their government to go kick some towelhead butt in retaliation. They know at the time it would be a popular move with the people who elected them. Hence they almost all supported war in Afghanistan and Iraq. So what you have now is government Of the People, By the People, For the People.
If you don’t like it, stop complaining, get actively involved in changing it. That’s what the founding fathers wanted you to do.
“If he moved to a modern state, he might like it…”
For whatever imperfections it has, if freedom is your thing, America is still the best option out there. What is your proposed utopian 3rd world alternative? Pick an actual country for him.
@Towertone
Wow. Am glad about your son and pray there is no long lasting consequences. The thought of my son being seriously ill scares me to death.
@ all posters who crap on other peoples countries, there is good and bad parts to every country and constitution. Work on your own country to make it the best it can be and respect others. I thought that was one of the ideals that came out of the signing of your constitution as well as the Canadian one…..tolerance. I am sure that is the same in most countries. Sadly that is one of the things we seem to forget…especially when we see postings like FU Martin.
Well, America needs a good military to defend against our many, many enemies as evidenced by these posts made to an American website that links news and stories about an American company, Apple, Inc. You can see the same kinds of posts on other American websites like YouTube.
We do need to pull out of all parts of the world and let them all go back to killing each other while we stay safe at home behind our nuclear shield.
@My moronic colleague who insists that I quote, is all its glorious profundity: “So get up off your fat lazy apathetic HYPOCRITICAL welfare state ass and run for political office.”
Stupid fool. I am neither fat, lazy, hypocritical nor a resident of a welfare state. Hence your comment is not even wrong and really lazy; highly suggestive of its utterer/poster wouldn’t you say?
PT are my initials. Man you are REALLY, REALLY, REALLY dense. Must be that fabulous education you were provided. Stand proud and continue to affirm the stereotype of the boorish, under-brained American (apologies to the intelligent americans who certainly do not conform to this stereotype). Anyway, you’re not even interesting so I suggest you, in your vernacular: “take your fat, stupid, inane, simplistic, lazy ass to college and get yourself an education.”
And no, I’m not going to read any more of the excrement you post here moron… its beneath all of us…
“PT are my initials.”
How non anonymous of you to use your initials.
So get up off your fat lazy apathetic hypocritical ANONYMOUS IGNORANT welfare state ass and run for political office.
Wow. All this from “Happy Independence Day”
Guess the Mac world is just as bad as the PC world. Poor people.
Hope everyone had a good weekend!
Dearest “wet”
Wow, I’m humbled to be given a Jr. High civics lecture by someone with such lousy reading comprehension.
First you quoted me: “A careful parsing of words is evidently all some need to absolve the President of the responsibility for what was done with the “Patriot Act” in his administration.”
Read this part again… “responsibility for what was done with the “Patriot Act” NOT who passed it, but what was done with it… But you went on to say…
“It’s particularly ignorant to blame “The President” for the passage of any law.” –Boy you really told off that straw man you are arguing with.
For added emphasis read this slowly:
“The lapdogs of fear that we still have as a congress is still no excuse for what our “Decider” does.”
And then the only other time you tried to respond to another line from me you laughably GOT THAT WRONG TOO:
“If he moved to a modern state, he might like it…”
And you replied:
“For whatever imperfections it has, if freedom is your thing, America is still the best option out there. What is your proposed utopian 3rd world alternative?”
Hey Silly Willy, I said modern state, NOT 3rd World State… You know what? there are other modern countries out in the big world, everything outside the US isn’t 3rd rate. You see I have been around enough to know that there are cool people doing good things all over the world.
Our “discussion” is finished because you have shown yourself to be too stupid to comprehend English. I try not to make personal assessments of people posting here. I think there are plenty of smart ways to disagree responsibly without divisive trash talk. But you have earned my disdain. You make a lot of ASSumptions of the people you lecture but I can tell you are a fool just by reading your own words.
Easy.
And thanks for the civic lecture. As a librul, America hating Godless Muslim lover, I had no idea the way this great nation actually works!
Let get this thread to four pages b4 it peters out.
God Bless Steve “Reality Distortion” Jobs!
Richie, Thanks for the blanket well wishes. My weekend was great, did you have a nice one?
Hey Towertone, God bless you and your son. Take care buddy.
Actually, yes I did thank you. BBQ with my in-laws, and a 800 mile round trip to drop off my kids and wife at her sisters for 2 weeks. Overall, yes, a good weekend.
“Hey Silly Willy, I said modern state, NOT 3rd World State…”
Yes, but my initial comment was that he should move to a 3rd world country so as to understand the differences between America and most other places on earth. But pick a modern country for him if you like. While you’re at it, move there yourself. Make it more fun, pick a random country and see if you end up better or worse off. For you my random country generator has chosen Belarus.
“And thanks for the civic lecture. As a librul, America hating Godless Muslim lover, I had no idea the way this great nation actually works!”
You’re right, you do seem pretty ignorant as to even the most basic facts as to how your government works.
To all those saying ‘shut up’ about the people here expressing their opinions, you’re guilty of being as ‘intolerant’ as the people you supposedly dislike by attempting to suppress any kind of discussion under the holier-than-thou guise of humility and compromise.
Life is so much better when you actually have some kind of conviction behind your actions or thoughts. Debate, no matter how heated, makes for a richer experience. You might get riled up, sad, agreeable or plain bored! Great fun, isn’t it?
Now that’s the value of what America means.
