In 1989 the Tien an Min protesters in China erected a “Liberty” statue modeled on our own Statue of Liberty. Imperfect though we are, we continue to inspire. Independence Day is an important reminder of what personal freedom is all about. It would do the mandarins in DC a lot of good to remember that if they persist in removing freedoms as they have done for the last decade then they will be in danger of another revolution for freedom from oppression. And this is so easily seen by those of us outside the USA and not part of your culture.

What are you basing that on? The population of the UK is one of the most watched and least free in Europe. Spying on it’s citizens by the government and even city councils is commonplace.
In Sweden, the government can, without a warrant, tap any cross border phone call or read any email or fax.
And just how many rights do you have in European Eastern Bloc countries?
I could go on. In the US you have a lot of people who value their freedom and object loudly at any interference with it. In Europe people are used to being ruled by tyrants, so just put up with things no American would.

What kind of men were the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence and who, by their signing, committed an act of treason against the crown?
These were men of substantial property. They had economic security as few men had in the 18th century. Each had more to lose from revolution than he had to gain by it.
The penalty for treason was death by hanging. And remember: the British fleet was already in New York Harbor. They were sober men. Raise up by the Lord to perform a sacred work. It was principle, not property, that had brought these men to Philadelphia.
Stephan Hopkins, from Rhode Island, was a man past 60. As he signed with a shaking pen, he declared: “My hand trembles, but my heart does not.”
Even before the list was published, the British marked down every member of Congress suspected of having put his name to treason. All of them became the objects of vicious manhunts.
– Francis Lewis, New York delegate saw his home plundered and his estates completely destroyed by British soldiers. Mrs. Lewis was captured and treated with great brutality. She died from the effects of her abuse.
– Philips Livingstone had all his great holdings in New York confiscated.
– Robert Morris, merchant prince of Philadelphia, delegate and signer, met Washington’s appeals and pleas for money year after year. He made and raised arms and provisions which made it possible for Washington to cross the Delaware at Trenton.
– William Ellery, Rhode Island delegate, saw his property and home burned to the ground.
– Thomas Nelson, signer of Virginia, was at the front in command of the Virginia military forces. With British General Charles Cornwallis in Yorktown, fire from 70 heavy American guns began to destroy Yorktown piece by piece. Lord Cornwallis and his staff moved their headquarters into Nelson’s home. While American cannonballs were making a shambles of the town, the house of Governor Nelson remained untouched. Nelson turned in rage to the American gunners and asked, “Why do you spare my home?” They replied, “Sir, out of respect to you.” Nelson cried, “Give me the cannon!” and fired on his magnificent home himself, smashing it to bits. But Nelson’s sacrifice was not quite over. He had raised $2 million for the Revolutionary cause by pledging his own estates. When the loans came due, a newer peacetime Congress refused to honor them, and Nelson’s property was forfeited. He was never reimbursed. He died, impoverished, a few years later at the age of 50.
Lives, fortunes, honor!!
Of those 56 who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, in each case with brutal treatment. Several lost wives, sons or entire families. One lost his 13 children. Two wives were brutally treated. All were part of manhunts and driven from their homes. Twelve signers had their homes completely burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one defected or went back on his pledged word.
— And, finally, there is the New Jersey Signer, Abraham Clark. He gave two sons to the officer corps in the Revolutionary Army. They were captured and sent to that infamous British prison ship afloat in New York Harbor known as the hell ship “Jersey,” where 11,000 American captives were to die. The younger Clarks were treated with a special brutality because of their father. One was put in solitary and given no food. With the end almost in sight with the war almost won, no one would have blamed Abraham Clark for acceding to the British request when they offered him his sons’ lives if he would recant and come out for the King and Parliament. The utter despair in this man’s heart, the anguish in his very soul, must reach out to each one of us down through these 220+ years with he answer: “No.”
The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence proved by their every deed that they made no idle boast when they composed the most beloved line in American history. “And for the support of this Declaration with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”
The declaration is one of the most noble and beautiful political documents in human history. The closest thing we have to Scripture written by man is: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness?”
They were forged by great sacrifice. These are living words that satisfy the deepest cries for liberty in the human spirit. “Sacred honor” isn’t a phrase we use much these days, but every American’s life is touched by the greatness of this, the Founders’ legacy. It is freedom, tested by blood, and watered with tears.

Every time we ask Government to do something for us, or help us, of give us something, we give up our Independence. Whether it be health care, or college loans, or protection from “hate speech”, when we turn from ourselves to solve these, and look instead to Washington D.C. or Sacramento, or any other location of Government, we give up a little piece of our Independence. On this day of Independence, let us celebrate the freedoms given to us, and give thanks to the generations before us who handed them down, sometimes at the expense of their own lives. Read the Declaration of Independence to your children; it is a stunningly beautiful and stirring document. And when next you vote – for President of the U.S. or for a local mayor – listen closely to what they promise you. If it is lots of “free” stuff, be prepared to give up a little more of your freedom if you pull the lever for that person. So, it’s okay to complain about Bush… God Bless It… you’re free to do that! But the fact is that it is not the President that takes your freedoms away, it’s you. Every time you ask, or allow, the Government to step in to “solve” a problem. Stay Independent, vote for less Government, not more. And enjoy your glorious freedoms today.
PS– My freedoms have been far more impacted by the law against using my cellphone in the car than by the Patriot Act.

Give up the liberal and conservative rants. Neither party is the defender of the people and both have massively increased government spending and taxation (fees) over the years. Both have shown a tendency to flaunt the law when it suits them. Both have made poor decisions, either through a lack of judgment or overzealous self-righteousness. Both parties have gradually evolved the federal government to be too dominating and interested in legislating for the ‘good of the people.’
Most recently, the party currently in charge has shredded what little dignity remained to this country by torturing prisoners and sending them to other countries to be tortured. What ever happened to ‘Give me liberty, or give me death?’ It was sacrificed on the altar of fear and a cry for safety at any cost. The cost was the loss of the fundamental ideals that fired the will of our ancestors. We have become weak, decadent. Home of the fried and land of the violent. Short sighted and easily gulled into ill-conceived actions. No longer willing or able to accept personal responsibility. Ruled by greed, envy and resentment. Fueled by entitlement and hatred borne of injustices long past.
The basis of this country is great. But the reality is not quite so rosy, is it? This country can become great, can approach the ideals upon which it was founded if we stop thinking ‘me’ and start thinking ‘we.’
Amen, Still hopeful. If we can give up the us vs them ideological sparring the country will be better off. But when we have people actually trying to use a religious test for true patriotism, there is a lot of education that’s going to be necessary before we can hope to have a successful dialectic.

Actually – You’re not that far off. The root word in hebrew and greek could be translated as “favor.” And many greek scholars would agree that the phrase “god bless you.” could be translated “especially favored by God.”

Have you travelled at all? The French seem to annoy everybody. Hate of the French seems to be universal. Firstly they were bad colonial masters. More recently they are pompous, overly self important assholes who still think they have some importance in world affairs. Their permanent Security Council seat should be taken off them just to underscore how unimportant they’ve become.
And Saddam was an idiot. He could have defused the whole invasion by just saying: “I have no WMD. Come look anywhere you like.” Instead by not cooperating, he gave Bush and friends the excuse they needed. However if he’d allowed full inspections that he’d lose the neighborhood bully image he was trying to create and probably have Iranian troops on his doorstep the next day. After years where the US had been all talk and no action, he bet that the US didn’t have the stomach for war, and lost.

Here’s the thing about the constitution. Under it, the President can’t change a single American law. Not one. It’s Congress that does that. He is Commander in Chief, but he can’t declare war. That’s Congress too. It’s all part of the separation of powers that is built into the constitution.
So there are some subtleties, police actions and executive orders, and actions to immediately defend the US. But any independent presidential military action is emergency action only and requires congressional approval for troops to stay there. Laws like the Patriot Act have been passed by Congress not the President. He signs all laws and can veto ones he doesn’t like. But Congress can override his veto. He can only propose and lobby for passage of laws he wants, not actually pass any himself.
If Bush were not respecting the Constitution, there’s numerous actions which could be taken by Congress or the Judiciary and even by ordinary citizens (thought the judiciary) to remedy that.
That separation and balance of powers between the branches of US government is one of the Constitution’s strongest features.
As recently as 2004 the population were sufficiently behind Bush to re-elect him. That’s the great thing about American democracy, if you make what you believe to be a mistake in choosing your President or members of Congress, you can always correct that next election.
Before dumping on France, you might consider that France gave us the Statue of Liberty, but it took our country forever to collect the money to build the base for it.
Furthermore, France aided the Colonies/U.S. in the Revolutionary War. Admittedly they had some motives of self-interest, including engaging England in a war with the Colonies to drain their treasury and split their military forces. But France’s aid benefited our country, as well.
More recently, France (along with most of the rest of the world) chose not to join the U.S. in Bush’s drive to attack Iraq. That is their right and was clearly the correct choice in hindsight. I might also add that hindsight was not required for anyone with a brain to come to the same conclusion. The Bush/Cheney adminstration was clearly seeking an excuse to attack Iraq, and fabrication of that justification was simply a means to an end. That is why the adminstration purged everyone with a dissenting opinion who had the guts to express themselves.
All of the recent flag waving and ‘you are either with us or against us’ mentality is terrifying. There is an air of McCarthyism surrounding the so-called Patriot Act Of course you don’t have anything to fear if you aren’t doing anything wrong, do you comrade? Privacy is overrated and there isn’t any explicit ‘right to privacy’ in the Constitution.
The current administration decries ‘legislation from the bench.’ And yet legislation from the Oval Office (the Administrative Branch of government) is rampant via Presidential Signing Statements. Bush has the gall to sign legislation into law and then exclude himself from having to follow those laws at his discretion.
We have now decided that “All men (people) are created equal’ only applies to U.S. citizens, and only then if they don’t have some ‘taint of terrorism’ about them. Do not be too quick to give up the rights of the next person, should you be next. That form of thinking is a cancer that eats away at the ideals on which this country was based. Although never fully realized, these ideals should be respected and nurtured even at the risk of personal injury or loss.
This country has sunk quite low, and those who fail to recognize these unfortunate trends are doomed to repeat the mistakes (and consequences) of history.
I guess this thread is an illustration of what America has come to, but it is certainly not what it can be at its best.

Signing statements have no force of law. If anything they give Congress a very clear warning to go back and clarify exactly what they meant if there is any ambiguity in the law for the President to exploit. We should pull out of Iraq. Saddam is dead, mission accomplished. We should pull out of Afghanistan. That country is hopeless. With our troops at home, we will have the manpower to build a strong border defense against Canada and Mexico and in the process declare our independence from illegal immigration. With the trillions we save, America can pay off its debts and exploit our vast internal resources, declaring independence from our oil-peddling enemies. Europe can go back to having a major war every 20 years while the U.S. with our great economy, piles and piles of nuclear-tipped ICBMs, and massive, undefeatable Navy, would be safe forever more from a world filled with despots and tyrants.
America, it is time for us to once again declare our independence, before it is too late.

And we divorce ourselves further and further from the democratic process. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. We, the public, have fallen asleep as the wheel or walked away from our task because they, the politicians, all seem like a waste of time and effort. Guess we got what we deserve.

And I agree that we have lost and are continuing to lose many freedoms they sacrificed for and believed in. I suspect that some out there will not have learned from history and may not see the comparisons to certain stances of Stalinist Russia and pre-WWII Germany in the direction the U.S. has been heading. Children are being told to turn in parents. Police can whisk you away for telling jokes. A streaker at a high school football game is made to register for life as a sex offender. A teacher with an angel on her desk is called on the carpet for violating separation of church and state. Religious believers in general have been under attack for years with some wanting to abolish the national motto on U.S. currency and strip God from all public places. Enormous numbers find themselves in prison for violation of questionable laws or with severe punishments not fitting their crimes. Too many are innocent altogether. The. U.S. is an embarrassment internationally by unilaterally withdrawing from treaties or simply ignoring treaties already signed. Its word has been worthless not only in recent years, but for many, many years before that. Violation of agreements with native America groups is but one of many examples. The judicial system, including the Supreme Court, has been out of hand for years. Many times the courts have overturned legitimate votes by the people for one thing or another. The “right” to Privacy has no meaning at all, again in violation of the Constitution’s 9th and 10th amendments and many state constitutions. People are deprived of property and their own freedom at the whim of individuals, including TSA, with no due process at all. Although the Declaration of Independence says that “all” men are created equal, that apparently only applies to Americans as we can witness at Guantanamo and in many places throughout the world, and even within the U.S. itself.
Jocko was right to bring up the sacrifices of the Founding Fathers. What is happening today was not what they had intended.
For continued violations of their deeply held beliefs, the current U.S. president does rank among the worst in U.S. history. (I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I find all the candidates bad.) Under him, the Patriot Act stopped just short of setting up secret police. The banking act forces bank employees to turn you in as well as other employees for an off-handed comment or a plethora of other innocent actions. And you’d never know it.
As years go by, generations accept all this as normal and justify their loss of freedoms using the “justifications” of the government. They no longer remember what freedoms they had. Many in Nazi Germany also accepted the rationale they were told by their government. Fortunately many did not, though far too few to stop what was to come. Seemingly little things now portend far worse in the future.
The Founding Fathers correctly had a distrust of government and tried to build in protections against that government. Today, that government maintains that it is exempt from such “protections” but instead places some of those same controls on its own People. For many people who see a trend in what has been happening for years, even prior to the current president, they have become rightfully scared of what is to come and for threats to their own safety and security from their own government.
As imperfect as some today think they were, wrongly judging them by today’s standards, not theirs, we thank the Founding Fathers for their dreams and sacrifices. That is what is remembered on America’s Independence Day. That is what should be remembered.

No, a basic understanding of the Constitution and the separation of powers so wisely put in place by the founding fathers should be necessary before blaming “The President” (whoever they may be) for all bad in the country. It’s particularly ignorant to blame “The President” for the passage of any law. In the end “The President” they can only choose to rubber stamp Congress’s law, or to send the law back to have Congress override their veto or re-write it. He can’t in any way write or change or modify the the law. The Supreme Court (yes the 3rd branch of government which keeps things in balance with the other two) slapped Bill Clinton on the wrist when he started trying to do exactly that.
Republicans, Democrats, the vast majority of the members of Congress voted for the Patriot Act. Why? Because their polling showed them it is what the people wanted after 9/11. Their polling showed that the people wanted their government to go kick some towelhead butt in retaliation. They know at the time it would be a popular move with the people who elected them. Hence they almost all supported war in Afghanistan and Iraq. So what you have now is government Of the People, By the People, For the People.
If you don’t like it, stop complaining, get actively involved in changing it. That’s what the founding fathers wanted you to do.

Well, America needs a good military to defend against our many, many enemies as evidenced by these posts made to an American website that links news and stories about an American company, Apple, Inc. You can see the same kinds of posts on other American websites like YouTube.

You’re right, you do seem pretty ignorant as to even the most basic facts as to how your government works.
To all those saying ‘shut up’ about the people here expressing their opinions, you’re guilty of being as ‘intolerant’ as the people you supposedly dislike by attempting to suppress any kind of discussion under the holier-than-thou guise of humility and compromise.
