“Apple Support has locked a discussion thread about newly purchased iMacs exhibiting symptoms of problematic displays in what Tom’s Hardware is calling an act of censorship,” MacNN reports.
“The topic, titled ‘Bought new iMac 20″ Faded Screen,’ began on August 7th — the first day the new iMacs went on sale — and quickly became the primary place for new iMac owners to discuss their troubles of 20-inch and some 24-inch iMacs,” MacNN reports. “The discussion saw a slew of traffic in its early stages, which later soared to an average of 429 hits per day until Apple locked the topic to prevent further posts, according to the report.”
“From August 7th to November 18th the thread accrued more than 15,000 hits for an average of roughly 158 hits per day. That number rocketed up to 9,000 hits in just 21 days before Apple closed the thread,” MacNN reports. “What’s more, new posts about the gradient color issue in new iMacs are disappearing, with error messages taking their place in the forums. Apple has yet to reply to any of the posts regarding the issue in its Intel-based iMac Display support forum, and has not acknowledged the existence of any issue.”

This kind of censorship has been common practice in the discussion forums for awhile now.
I thought that with the lastest patch for the Intel Macs, they fixed the problem with the displays…

The new monitors Apple are using are terrible. The last time I went to an Apple store I could see the gradient issue on every 20″ in the store. Embarrassing for Apple to say it mildly.

Okay, I am a Apple Fanboy from the beginning. I love the company and all it has done. But I am really concerned that they are over reaching themselves in an attempt to constantly be new and better.
I have had a slew of problems with Leopard, I’ve had to do a clean install and reinstall all my standard apps (nothing weird or esoteric), and still there are problems. Apple TV seemed to have been pushed out of the gate before it was ready. .Mac has been crapping out. Now this discussion forum being shut down by Apple! I mean, common practice at other sites is no excuse for this behavior at Apple. We’re the good guys, right? The ones who listen and aren’t afraid and who write back?
Apple needs to take a deep breath.
The Apple Computer we once knew is history. It’s being replaced by Dell technology, practices, methods, customer care, etc… just about everything except for lower prices.
Yet the arrogance is growing.

There are 2 problems.
1. The video cards were locking up the UI. This was fixed with a firmware update. Mine had it bad, some were worse.
2. Some say the display appears darker at the top or bottom or it fades from top to bottom. I don’t beleive a software update can fix this….

That’s funny – I have both sold several new iMacs as well as purchased one for an xmas present that I have been using while I got it setup. I have not seen the problems reported on the three units that I have personally touched!

Apple, if your listening:
1: Go back to a quality LCD
2: Use museum glass (if you must) as it’s less reflective.
3: Offer a total matte option for the over 80% that want matte.
I DID NOT buy two iMac’s this holiday season because of the LCD issues and the glossy issues.
I told the Apple folks exactly why and they said they don’t blame me.
Because they were so nice and said they would refer this up to the mothership, I bought a couple of iPod Classics.
I actually thing SJ needs a swift kick in the ass actually.
Fact: The 20″ model uses a cheaper LCD panel than the 24″ model.
The panel in the 20″ is junk – the viewing angle in nowhere even close to the advertised 160 degrees. Is it coincidence that our local Apple store has ZERO 20″ models on the floor? I doubt it. I’m willing to bet there will be a class-action on this real soon.
Bottom-Line: Does anyone remember how stunned everyone was at the pricing of the 20″ when it was intro’d? I guess we should have known.

Apple as been experiencing an increase in quality issues regarding software and hardware. I also have two friends who had to reorder their macbooks 5+ times because the Apple online store continuously kept canceling their orders!
I really think that Apple is experiencing growing pains as their sales are taking off in just about every area. In time they will sort all of these things out before its too late.
Apple is doing an amazing job with so few employees compared to so of the larger vendors out there.
I still love OSX but not Apple hardware so much any more. My 20″ iMAC screen is usable but not the high quality I expected. So my next MAC will be a mini or a MacBook to save a few bucks. Or maybe a Pro if I can swing it. The middle ground products are beginning to suck.

Seems like a backlighting consistency problem. Seems like it does not affect most iMacs out there, just a higher than acceptable number. Seems like the new iMacs get great reviews. Seems like it has nothing to do with glossy versus matte (and 80% do NOT want a fuzz filter on their high pixel density displays). And seems like there will be a lot of 20″ iMacs to be sold on the Apple Store refurb page in the coming months.
I’ve got the 24 inch iMac and I haven’t seen any of the issues being thrown around.

To have 15,000 hits a day for this topic seems rather excessive a month into the launch of the new iMacs.
Could it be Dell employees posting to discourage people from buying the iMac?
To repeat I actually own a new 24″ iMac and I have not had any problems since the beginning of October.
It is always prudent to wait a couple of months after a major Mac OS software update, and let Apple work out the bugs. In fact, this always has been true for both Mac OS or Windows, and it remains true today.
Apple does seem to be stepping in some doo with cheaper hardware components, poor quality control, and sub-par, India-based tech support. My greatest fear about Apple’s resurgence is that the company would lose control of quality as sales increased and price became more of an issue…Clearly this happening. We can only hope Apple will stem what could be a rising tide of problems.

All the same… i’d like to commend MDN for reporting this. Reporting should be balanced…. criticisms and praise.
Typically when Apple does this they seem to be ironically saying that “Yeah, something is wrong here.” I believe they do it to curtail disinformation while they sort out what the truth actually is. They’ve done it several times in the past and in each case an official response to the reported problems didn’t take long to follow.
BTW. Recently installed 25 20″ iMacs and 10 24″ in a law firm. Have yet to see any of these problems. In addition to those 25, I’ve installed several singular systems. I’m not saying that nothing is wrong, just that I haven’t seen these problems and I’ve worked with numerous iMacs.

I wonder who the supplier is for these LCDs. Could it be a problem getting decent quality monitors or just trying to maximize the profit margin? That is, if this really is as big an issue as it’s being made out to be. I know if I were having this problem I sure wouldn’t be happy. I agree that Apple needs to jump on these things as fast as possible to show they give a darn. At least acknowledge it.

I have a 24″ and my dad has a 20″ neither exhibit any problems as stated in this discussion. I think Apple was right in closing the thread because it just creates fear in making a purchase of an excellent computer. If you have a hardware problem call apple support! Don’t moan about it on the forums.
As for the glassy displays….I love them and they are a huge improvement over the DELL style dull matte displays of the past. I do believe all this whining over glossy displays is over blown. I hope they never go back to the dull faded colors of matte finish LCDs. Most of your new LCD and Plasma TV’s are glossy yet I dont here the same whining about them even though they are 2x -4x the size of an iMac. I guess these people are fine with the glare and eyestrain watching TV but have to complain to no end about a little computer monitor! Apple was right in switching to glass. I hope they continue this across their whole line of displays just like the LCD TV’s.
I am using a Core Duo 20″ Mac and have not noticed any problem. Actually, I am quite pleased with the quality of the screen. It’s the model prior to the glossy one that some seem to hate.

24″ glossy iMac for the holidays, it’s got issues with the LCD and the glossy screen totally sucks. I can’t see half the screen sometimes and can’t do anything because my apartment is small.
It’s going back for a Mini and a mid size Apple monitor. Apple’s matte screens are great compared to Dells or anyones. So comparing the two is dumb, especially a crappy matte vs a glossy.
My TV store has all matte screens, Sony has all matte TV screens in their stores. The Bravia is matte.
I have cheap tube like tv with glass, it sucks to watch because of the reflections.
Reflections suck, it hurts the eyes. but makes nice eye candy for idiots.
One important fact is that these Macs have at the very least 6 more months of warranty. So what is the big deal. If you have the problem, have Apple fix it. I have had to send a couple of Mac items back for service under warranty, every time I have gotten back a good working item. Every time, sometimes fixing it, others replacing it.

Same here. I bought my 24″ iMac about the same time you did (around October). When I first turned it on I had spots covering about a third of the screen which looked to me like condensation behind the glass. I left it on to dry it out and the spots quickly went away never to return again. This is one of the best Macs I have ever owned (I also have a Mac Pro, a MacBook Pro, and a Titanium PowerBook and have had about eight previous Macs dating way back). When I bought the iMac I wasn’t sure whether I would like the glossy screen but I love it now, better than all the other Macs and it’s much easier on my eyes. I work in a reasonable well-lit room and have had no problem with glare. It also presents a much sharper image. I’m a very happy Apple customer.

Any true fanboy knows that we must continue to pretend that all new Apple hardware doesn’t have serious problems for the first six months or so until Apple sorts them out. Maybe I’m just not allowing for the extra screen size but everything looks kind of squished and stretched on my new 20 inch 2.4Ghz iMac. I’ve set the the computer on the highest screen setting and it doesn’t make any difference.
I phoned Apple tech support and the tech. guy I spoke to said the the geometry may be out.
The spinning ball is a kind of longer and less rounder. Jpegs are stretched to varying degrees. Any ideas? I can’t find any information on this issue. My old 17 inch G5 iMac displayed images perfectly but not this iMac. I’m really dissatisfied. For the record I saw the same problem with my sister’s G4 emac.

I have a 24″ iMac. Screen resolution/brightness is superb. However, on occasion the machine freezes even after applying Apple’s fix.
I haven’t followed up with Apple Care (yet) as I’m not ready to go down that rabbit-hole. Waiting for SuperDuper to release its Leopard version. My plan is to bu via SuperDuper, then erase/install Leopard. If the freeze continues, then I’ll call Apple Care.

Pete is not fully accurate in his assessment of Windows’ 99.9% monopoly of law practices. More than 5300 law offices subscribe to Randy Singer’s The MacAttorney Newsletter. Singer co-authored The Mac Bible, and he also wrote The Macintosh Software Guide for the Law Office.
Apple estimates that 25% of Law businesses use Macs as their computer of choice.
So if theloniousMac says he installed 35 Macs in one law firm, it’s completely feasible… i.e., probably true.
My experience with forums of any kind (motorcycle, computer, music, etc) is that if ONE single person has a problem, then many other people start claiming to have problems. Like sympathetic pregnancy. Like with the current bike I have. Two guys had their bikes fall over off the kick stand in the parking lot and cause damage to the fairings, etc. All of a sudden, Kawasaki has a defective kickstand design, stop the presses! We need to petition for a recall! Kawasaki should pay for all damages, etc. In reality, you have two bozo’s that don’t know how to park a bike properly, and don’t want to take responsibility for being stupid or careless.
All that being said, I have never seen an iMac with a screen related issue. Does this mean the problem does not exist? No, I am sure there are a few folks out there with problems. But I would like to see them before I believe it’s the huge deal everyone is making it out to be.
Perhaps the admins are locking the posts down because it’s a bunch of windows fools posting… Like they come on here and post, just as easily.
I have an Imac 24″ the new one. No screen issues here. The computer runs flawless. Great PC, great software. Its up stairs. I have a macbook running beside my XP SP2 machine, a DELL
The macbook rarely needs to be rebooted. I do agree, that it is bugger now that i have leopard, Tiger was more stable, but Tiger was a deep version. My Dell with Xp SP2 needs to be reset all the time. web pages tend to lock the machine up. PDF files give it major issues and so does the Microsoft office suite.
Well crap, I thought Super Duper was Leopard compatible already! Can’t believe I missed this. I was going to install 10.5 over the holidays. Guess I will have to wait also. No way am I going without Super Duper.

I have a 20″ core duo and a core 2 duo macBook. No screen problems at all. The graphics on the imac developed a weird lock up issue, but apple sent a tech to my house and just in case, he pretty much replaced everything except the drives. New main board, video card, power supply and ram. Damn, that’s good service. No other problems now.

NO PROBLEMS at all. NIL.
Also – may I point out… then DEMOS at Yorkdale in the APPLE STORE… AND the Demo’s at Best Buy – all are still shiny and FLAWLESS in the stores.
I have not noticed ONE issue.
I imagine the screens are cheaper… but because of the glass the need for material in the older regular mat LCD to deepen the black WAS a cost factor.

I have an intel core duo imac, as well as a core 2 duo macbook … both have very clear coloration, and levels, but BOTH have a multitude of fingerprints on them.

You have absofuckinlutely no clue as to what you speak of. The only difference is that they put a glass “covering” over the screen instead of an anti-glare coating. Environmental impact savings = NIL.

Look, if you like the new glass screens on the iMacs, fine — I have no problem with that, but they call matte finish screens *anti-glare* for a reason. Turn on all the lights in your bedroom at night and try to look out the window — not too easy (without getting up close and cupping your hands around your eyes). Now turn off all the lights — much easier. *Glass has reflective properties*. There is no argument in the world that can refute that fact. It is *inherent* to glass itself. You cannot magically remove it. Like I said, if you enjoy the new glass screens, great — but they do make matte screens for a reason.
I bought a 24″ iMac a week ago. Haven’t noticed the colours being deeper, but it’s a great screen and I really like it. If I had had the choice, I’d have gone for matte, but for me it doesn’t matter too much, fortunately.

Yes, the 20″ iMac screens are low-quality junk. Every time you see 20″ and 24″ models standing next to each other you can see how dramatic the difference is the 24-incher’s screen is wonderful). The white iMacs did not have this issue.
And although I like glossy, matte should definitely be an option.

If Apple is selling more than a million of the iMac per quarter, it’s not surprising that some are coming through less than perfect. It’s also not surprising, given that it’s not Apple making these, but some low cost offshore manufacturer. But these are still under warranty, so they should be repaired or replaced under warranty.
But – and you knew this must be coming – this is another reason Apple should offer the pro-sumer “headless” Mac.
Everyone I know who has seen those glossy screens on the iMacs go WOW initially..
But then they realise that if you spend all day working looking at that glossy screen you are gonna have eye-sight problems.
Even in a dull lighted room you get reflections all over the place on those screens.
Why on earth Apple didn’t make a matte screen version is beyond me.
I’m a freelance designer and I sit in front of my macs for countless hours a day and the only thing stopping me from getting one of those imacs is the impractical glossy screen.
If I had bought one of those imacs to use all day I would be as blind as a bat by now.
Kinda funny, but outside of the desktop publishing/music/video businesses, my guess is that law firms are the heaviest users of Macs. I know mine does, and has for many many years. We have PCs to run some of those odd printout files that we get on occasion, but otherwise, no one uses or wants to use them.
All of our billing, time keeping, and case management software is custom written on FileMaker Pro and we use MS Office. Although if Pages and Numbers grows up just a bit more, we may see some defections to it. I just recently gave up using Word Perfect in Classic Mode (OS 9) as that was the last word processor written exclusively for attorneys on the Mac.
Oh yeah, almost forgot: 20″ aluminum Core 2 Duo Intel iMacs and no problems.
Clearly there is a problem. Before we resort to name-calling, conpiracy-claiming or anything else…
let’s just see how Apple deals with it. Companies mess up. It seems like Apple did this time. If they fix the problem and take care of their customers, then no biggie.

The Apple Cinema Displays use S-IPS technology (I believe the panels themselves are actually made my LG Phillips) and have for a few years now. You take a little hit on response time and contrast ratio/brightness, but the color fidelity is much MUCH better. Specs such as contrast ratio/brightness can be misleading as some manufacturers like to pump up their numbers (like not giving a true ANSI reading, or using dynamic contrast ratio numbers). AFAIK S-IPS and S-PVA displays are the best in terms of true color fidelity.
I have heard that the 24″ iMac uses an S-IPS display, but I can’t confirm that. Someone would have to disassemble one and get the part number off the the panel itself.
Apple has a weird hang up regarding Hardware issues. As I’ve said here and on the Apple site (and have been censored at both places) they have a BIG issue with the Mac Mini Optical drives.
It’s fixable (most people believe it’s a frimware issue) but it’s been two years and they still haven’t done anything about it.
It’s strange, I’ve been a Mac user since the mid 80s and really…this is the first time I’ve seen Apple ignore such a big issue for so long.

Actually if the interior of the glasses are glossy it can cause reflections into the eye if light can get in from the sides. But this is minor.
Staring into a 24″ mirror wouldn’t be a problem, because it reflects all the light, giving the eyes one clear image.
Staring into a 24″ glossy iMac causes eyestrain because there are two or more images, the screen image and the slightly out of focus reflections…
Now you know why it’s a major health concern.

I can understand peoples concern if a glossy monitor is used in an environment where any reflections cannot be eliminated, possibly such as a company setting with the ceiling covered in fluorescent tubes. In that case a non-reflective type would of course be preferable since even CRTs can be hard to use.
But not all circumstances fit that description. I have a 19″ glossy LCD that is used in a typical home setting that only has any visible reflections when it is turned off. When used it creates no more eyestrain than my matte screened LCD.
That being said, I do believe that we should have a choice, but it seems most manufacturers want glossy widescreens. I think if Apple had gone with all matte on the MacBook there would a lot less dissent than with the all glossy.
I can’t help but think that they have a different motive for covering the iMac screen with a glass pane. They probably could have used a shiny coating more cheaply than glass. Is it just to protect the screen from a four year old with a crayon?
Or is it a way to prepare for a touch screen? It doesn’t seem like it would be that hard for them to do. I don’t know why it would be needed or wanted, but Apple is pretty forward thinking. I guess we will see.
Of course, with Macs being sold at other retailers such as Best Buy alongside other brands, it could possibly be at a visual disadvantage having a matte screen compared to a glossy. At least from the aspect of more vivid colors; it would depend on the setting. Kind of like how the TV makers have the brightness cranked up and the colors skewed to stand out.
Anyway, I think Apple and all others should make their products with safety, comfort and usability first and foremost. It just makes sense.
Another thought is:
What if Apple made the iMac so you could use it like a Wacom tablet to draw on. It would have to be able to orient in a comfortable position to use; possibly a removable screen section. Could they make that part wireless? Along with touch functions, that could be fun to use. Just a thought. I sure wish I was privy to the ideas floating around Apple’s think tank.

I was recently called to check out a 24″ iMac aluminium which the owner said had “water” inside the screen. Of course it was just that condensation issue some of the brand-new 24″ iMacs have been having when first used out of the box. Lots of people have been writing about it on the Apple forums. So what? Just turn the machine on, set it to playing Chess with itself on advanced setting, let it get hot and get the fans going, whatever, the condensation will be gone before the day is done, never to return.
I am not saying this screen quality brouhaha over on the forums is baseless, but as others above have said, if it’s a problem, send the machine in on AppleCare; they’ve all got one year of AC.
Whenever I buy 1st gen Macs from Apple, I also always get the extended AC at the end of the first year, just to be safe. These 20″ owners should do the same.
Seven years and counting to replace my venerable iMac. Unless Apple can solve its current spate of hardware and software problems, I’m sticking to with my ancient iMac and 10.4.
