[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers “Joe J.” and “MacSmiley” for the heads up.]
@ Reality Check: please be aware that Jobs ran iBench *live* and *everyone* *saw* how fast pages were *rendered*, not just loaded or something.
So please do not fall into to the trap of regular FUD agents
Fixed all sorts of problems in my Dashboard, hooray!
MW = fine. Workin’ fine.
@Cheese
To update Safari for Windows run the Apple Software Update Utility in your start menu>all programs. This works. Happy browsing Cheese.
But display of bold type under Mac OS X is still completely bizarre-looking (go to talkingpointsmemo.com or JSTOR.org for examples).
It’s discouraging that they could introduce some completely arbitrary text-display issue in a new version of Safari, breaking something that had worked perfectly since the first release, and then go on to fail to fix it in the maintenance update.
My faith in Apple’s support for Mac OS X is faltering.
Is this maintenance update basically just for Windows, with a perfunctory Mac OS X co-release to keep the version numbering parallel? Because this malformed-bold-type issue in Mac OS X is a pretty significant issue, and it’s embarrassing that they’re unable to fix it.
Or uninterested?
@AWidgetIHaveNo
That’s what i’ve been doing since this morning and i’ve restarted the damn pc for about half as much. Everytime, Software Update tells me my softwares are up to date.
Safari, otoh, tells me otherwise with the version still at 3.0.1.
Btw, I’m typing this via SfW.
I think i’ll give it a rest and hopefully the updates appear tomorrow.
thanks.
Did you know: Safari 3.xx is currently in BETA??
Apple is obviously addressing core security and stability issues first. I doubt they would prioritize the appearance issue you mention prior to those. In any case, it’s more than a little unfair for you to complain until the app comes out of Beta status.
Trust Apple for it’s fast release of updates!
Good work guys!
If only Microsoft could be as efficient (NO CHANCE!!)
r: Incidentally, the marketing figures for how fast Safari is are completely bogus anyway, and another slight of hand by Apple’s superb marketing department. The benchmarks exploit a technicality in the order Safari loads page content and don’t represent an accurate measure of the rendering of a page. This article explains it all:

Never trust Apple marketing when it comes to claims of speed…

@Huck
I went to those 2 web pages you mentioned, with Safari 3.0.2 on XP Pro and on OSX. And so now I ask, what the heck are you talking about? Both of those pages look absolutely fine!
Then I went to the same sites using I.E. and Firefox, and what *I* see is a highly pixelated page of text, very difficult to read compared to Safari. I’ll take Safari’s view over XP’s “dot-matrix printer” view any day.
My XP is totally stock, no settings have been altered from its initial install. Is there something I have to fiddle with first to make it look OK in IE & FF?
I found the option to enable ClearType in XP, so I turned it on and saw no change at all. I even rebooted XP and tried again. Those pages still look pixelated. Can a Windows person tell me what to do to get XP’s browsers to give me smooth text?
Yes, Wingsy, buy a Mac!
Cubert – I have SEVEN Macs already! From a Mac Plus to a Quad G5 & MacBook. How many more do I need????

3.0.2 works great on my iMac G5, but on my PowerBook G4 it won’t let the Quicktime videos play. I have tried suggestions from apple.com support, no fixes there!
Well, I immediately downloaded it to my PeeCee and tried it out. It starts up slower than IE (pre-7.0), but once up, loads the pages much faster.
Unfortunately, I work for a PeeCee vendor and so we are a MS shop. As the edict came down years ago, if MS has a solution, it doesn’t matter how good it is, we use it. This means that I have to deal with Exchange, Sharepoint, etc. in my daily life. And, more unfortunately, at the present time, Safari doesn’t play nice with them. When using Exchange’s OWA (Outlook Web Access), Safari just hangs. When using (WSS) Sharepoint, Safari dies every time after authenticating. And then there is the ActivKey with my Class A certificate in it. Does not work at all with that. Still I update the BETA and am hoping that Apple will fix it by the initial 1.0 release.
And yes, I did submit the bug reports.
Regards,
Mike.
i’ve had trouble with safari crashing my entire computer on myspace. happened three times before i went to camino. tried the same exact thing and steps and had no issues. reported it to Apple.
“since when do simple installs in Mac OS require restarting? Does Safari 3.0.X make modifications to the kernel?”
No, but it does update system frameworks like WebKit.framework. Which is used by, among other things, Dashboard.
Not a good idea to overwrite files that are in use. So they do it on boot.
The joys of having an OS-integrated browser!
