The voyage begins. Apple has added Star Trek: The Original Series to their iTunes Store.
The year is 2264, 201 years after man first traveled faster than the speed of light, and 113 years after the first voyage of the Enterprise NX-01, Captain James T. Kirk and his crew set forth in the constitution-class USS Enterprise.
So far, only season one’s 29 episodes are available. Each episode is priced at iTunes Store’s standard $1.99 per episode.
The entire season one is available for $56.99 (you’ll save 72-cents there, buddy!)
Find Star Trek: The Original Series via iTunes Store here.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Adam W.” for the heads up.]
This is great news! Oh wait carn`t buy them as l`m not in the US… When are they going to release TV shows and movies in itunes Australia… Please
I understand that only the versions that have already been digitally enhanced have replaced the “older original versions” on iTunes. The episodes from the first season that have not yet been digitally enhanced are on iTunes also, but just are not the digitally enhanced versions.
Also I understand that all versions up on iTunes are the full, uncut versions (not the syndicated shortened, commercial break versions). Enjoy.
Hey It’s supposed to be 101 years after the first man went light speed not 201. 2264-2163=101
Get your sience fiction facts right!
PLEASE, Give us movies and Tv shows here downunder

As a bonus, every buyer of the entire season will also get the complete “Show Me the Money” starring William “Shat-tastic” Shatner! It will be downloaded automatically. You will NOT be able to interrupt it. It will reside in your hard drive for all eternity. It will play at every login. We KNEW you’d enjoy it!
There is no way we’re going to have faster than light travel in 57 years. What a ridiculous concept. I predict this TV show will be cancelled in less than five years.
“Season one’s 29 episodes.”
Ahhh, the good old days. Here it is January and nearly all the TV shows are already in re-runs. My TiVo is bored.
The remastered episodes are VERY well done. Without adding ANYTHING excessive to the original shows, the effects just look better, cleaner and are properly detailed. Of course, the picture is much cleaner (but some of the 60’s lighting effects come out a bit more sharply than one might be used to).
Even the music has been re-recorded in stereo. The original music for TOS was for the most part prerecorded and then edited for each show as a tape library of music. I have checked out a few of the remastered ones and I believe that they have been using a copyist for each episode, taking the scores of the original cues (all entered into a computer using Sebelius or Finale), sequencing them in the same order as each show’s edit of the original library tapes, orchestrating smoother transitions and then printing out the scores and parts and doing an ORIGINAL recording of the entire episode score that complies with the original edit of the pre-recorded tracks. The reason I say this is because the transitions between library edits on the remastered shows are perfectly seamless, with string decays etc. blending over from one “edit” of the library to the next “edit” of the library. I know edited music when I hear it (even well edited music), and I am sure that they’re rerecording every episode’s score

Hence, the fact that they’re mixing re-mastered and original print shows together at the iTMS is TOTALLY BOGUS.
As Lawrence from Office Space might say, “Fucking. A.”
BUT…can Zune Tang put the special ‘Kirk/Spock’ episode on his Zune along with all of the other gay porn?
Not without the obligatory DRM getting slapped onto it, Clyde

2264….. I think that’s the same year when the highly anticipated iPhone comes out! 😀
I’m sorry, but these re-mastering schemes are just a way to get you to pay for what you’ve already bought again. Greedy, pointless. These shows were made in the sixties and it’s really okay for them to look like they were, in my opinion. Mainstream entertainment is more in the toilet than ever if you ask me. Star Wars=PC? What kinda crack you smokin’, boy? I’ve been using Apples Macs for nigh on 25 years, and I have never been that big a dweeb.
The re-mastered episodes are being aired on FREE TV and in HI-DEF. Unless you want to buy the DVD releases that will surely be released, or take your chances with this mishmash of original/re-mastered episodes at the iTMS, you can enjoy the re-mastered ones for free (as I have) thanks to your local broadcaster. If you have a PVR connected to your computer, then you’ll have ’em forever.

I figure that, given how Star Trek redefined science fiction and how legendary the original series is, the re-mastering is justified… it’s up to each person as to whether or not they’ll shell out for any for-fee distribution. Besides, as TVs get bigger and go hi-def, the original prints and effects are said to look like total shit. If there was ever a TV phenom that deserves the fresh coat of paint, it’s Star Trek.
NEXT: Let’s re-master Twilight Zone episodes 😀 but PLEASE keep them black & white!

Sometimes it’s just worth it to keep life simple…I’ll pay the $2 and get my episodes from iTunes.

Count me in with the group of people who are very happy with the remastered Star Treks. It’s not that the original Star Trek looked like crap, it’s that HD TVs show its defects in a way 1960s-era TVs couldn’t. They looked great then because their defects were invisible. (That, and before 1969 nobody had actually seen what a planet looks like from space.)
When Paramount took on scanning the original film for digital remastering (in 2K I think), cleaning up its effects was inevitable. But they have shown amazing restraint, and have tried to redo the original look of each effect, shot for shot, as closely as possible.
But shame on Apple (or Paramount, whoever is responsible) for not clearly marking which episodes are which. I bet that whenever iTunes goes HD, these episodes will look phenominal. (By 2163?)

Keep in mind that, according to Star Trek, World War III already happened. The 1990s were a dark era for mankind with the Eugenics Wars pitting a small group of genetically enhanced and highly ambitious supermen against the rest of the world. By the late 90s, the smoothest Star Trek villain ever created had the entire world under his thumb. But thankfully, the free world rose up against him and drove his administration into hiding. He and his followers then fled Earth around the beginning of the 21st century in a small ship that was originally built for the manned exploration of our solar system, where they laid cryogenically frozen and drifting through space for some 250-odd years, before being discovered by the USS Enterprise in the episode Space Seed. (Apparantly being the leader of the world gives you access to prototype ships like this.)
Sounded very plausible in 1966.
But does that bother me? No more than the fact that a 1968 movie claimed that we’d have passenger space travel to the Moon, a manned scientific expidition to Jupiter, and a highly intelligent thinking machine with a sultry voice all by 2001. This is fantasy, plain and simple.
What happened to the episodes? I downloaded one last month , went back couple of days ago and today (2/14/07), and they are gone!
