In fact having watched AlJazeera here in the UK I can say it was very well balanced. It’s actually reporting many stories that western news agencies should be covering and aren’t.

All anyone has to do is turn on Telemundo or Univision news and see that there’s a lot that isn’t reported on English-speaking stations. You don’t have to understand Spanish to see understand the qualitative difference in reporting.

Al-Jazeera report things differently. There is a cultural difference. Where US news can’t even show pictures of coffins or funerals of their war dead, Al J will show acts of murder as merely reporting facts. It probably wouldn’t report US military picking up a soldier from hospital where she recovering from injuries sustain in a traffic accident as an heroic rescue.

Way to internalize the talking points of the conservative corporate movement, which has been successfully repeating this for 25 years to push the national conversation rightward. Nevermind that the corporate parents of every TV network are major Republican party donors, that the number of rightwing cable and radio hosts far, far outweighs the number of “liberal” ones on all channels, and that recently many executives at various news organizations have admitted to slanting the news rightward so as not to offend the well-organized right-wing crazies. (See: Mark Halperin and Dick Meyer.) Check out mediamatters.org for documentation of the daily rightward slanting of all networks and media outlets. To say that Al Jazeera is unbiased is a huge claim, as it is for any news provider. Bias is inherent in any reporting of any news.
All news providers are biased in some respect. If a news provider tries to be unbiased, that is of course admirable, but they have a demographic to cater to, which will instill a bias in their reporting.
I don’t want to launch a bashing session, but having seen the American news channels, they seem to be not to even try to be unbiased, and the world is very black and white to them Us vs them etc.
I can’t help but feel that our only hope as consumers is to watch as wide as possible a range of news providers, with their inherent biases and decide for ourselves where the truth lies.
But good for apple for being a part of something which will provide the world with more information, more options and hopefully, a more balanced outlook.

The American press is very selective in the news articles the report on. Take a look at the 10:00 news some night and switch from ABC to CBS to NBC. You will all three of them reporting on the exact same story often at the exact same time in the hour. Didn’t enough things happen in the world that they could report on a few different things?
Also, Christians are the most prosecuted group in the world. More people die due to their Christian belief than any other reason.

Oh I’ve done plenty of reading and know exactly what our western governments have been doing to other countries.

Western governments promised to rebuilt Afghanistan after driving out the USSR, but then when they did leave, the promises to rebuild the country evaporated as quickly as the morning dew in the desert. This left a country, bombed into the stone age, with no effective government, no infrastructure and no trust for western promises of “freedom”. In a power vacuum, which we helped create, the Taliban rose. A people humiliated, abandoned, angry at our deceit. And we came again, promising freedom, promising to rebuild the country. Once again, it was just all talk.
And we wonder why they get pissed off at us??
Lets look at Iraq – the west helped install Saddam, replacing a popular, progressive, independently minded government elected by the people.
Iran: we helped overthrow a progressive government intent on nationalising its oil resources whose riches were being siphoned back to the west. This was replaced by a corrupt, inept regime which in turn was overthrown by the people resulting in the hardline regime which stayed in power for some time, lost influence, and has now regained a great deal of that influence.
Egypt: another democracy in the making, crushed once again by western meddling when we didn’t like the direction their popular, progressive and independently minded government was taking. What did we do? Installed a corrupt regime to do our bidding.
Would you like me to keep going? I’ve got a whole list of countries – about 30 at last count – many of them young democracies, or countries taking great strides towards democracy.
How about we move away from the Middle East and look at Europe – we have Greece, Italy, Spain.
Asia – The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand.
Central and South America – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Guatemala, Panama, Columbia.
Virtually all people who wanted to control their own destiny, build their own style of democracy, keep their countries wealth primarily for their own people and build an independent future.
But no, we had our sticky little fingers on their assets and riches and we just simply couldn’t let go. We had to have it all for ourselves.

I live in a very rich, successful democracy, it’s called Australia and we don’t receive, nor would we want or need any handouts with strings attached from the US. I don’t hate the U.S. or its “success” – we don’t envy you in any way. At least I live in a country where Electoral Commissions are independent of goverment. I know you can’t say the same.
Where were those Middle Eastern countries when Afghanistan needed help? Well, lets see – if we exclude the ones that were in a complete mess, and the ones with Western installed and supported dictatorships and the ones which were too poor to offer any meaningful help anyway, we’re probably left, with, well, virtually none I guess. That’s where they were.
That’s exactly the point I’m making – it’s because of western governments (see – plural) that these countries remain either poor or a complete fucking mess in some way, shape or form. And as soon as they do try to help one of their neighbours, they’re branded terrorists and if they don’t, they’re branded selfish and cowards.
All the countries I named where the West (mostly the US) has installed dictatorships, corrupt regimes, or crushed democracy/freedom movements, the information and evidence is readily available, quite often in the declassified documents of the US and other Western nations, as well as reports from the U.N., Amnesty International, The Red Cross, Human Rights Watch, MSF, respected journalists and journalistic bodies – an extensive list of reputable organisations. So it’s not some left wing conspiracy against the US (or other western governments).
I don’t want the US to withdraw from the world (fat chance of that happening anyway), but for God sake, put a bit of thought in before you go bumbling around the globe with your weapons of mass destruction. The world told you not to go into Iraq, that you’d make a complete botch of it, but no, you wouldn’t listen to your peers. And you’ve proved us right. Again.

Not that it has any relevance to the Iraq mess, but maybe we should have also listened to our peers and stayed out of WWII and let the Japanese push south to Australia. Last time I checked, they got pretty close until the US “bumbled” around and defended Port Moresby and fought the Battle of the Coral Sea. Maybe you would prefer to be speaking Japanese?
I only point this out because the US did not fight these battles for altruistic motives. The US was involved out of self interest then just as we are now. The only difference is that it also benefitted YOU that time.
One can also say that some of our allies (not including Australia) actively undermined the chance of any success by following their own self interest that had nothing to do with altruism OR a greater understanding of strategic realities. Instead, the opposition was based mainly on commercial interests and domestic political pressure.
This is happening again now in Iran, with the Chinese, Russians, and French being more than willing to make a few bucks by selling nuclear technology.

We already had a military industrial complex that would have been very happy to continue supplying the British and Russians, but that business was threatened by the near closure of North Atlantic shipping lanes by German u-boats. Domestic politics prevented US entry into the war, until we were directly threatened (attacked) at Pearl Harbor. If you believe in conspiracies, you could question the delay in the advance notice of the Japanese threat to the head of the Pacific Command at Pearl Harbor a day earlier.
The country was acting in self interest after that, and FDR was given an opening to advance US policy objectives by warfare as well. The onlly difference why people, seemingly you included, have a more romantic view of WWII is that we achieved our objectives fairly quickly. Had the US not developed nuclear weapons, the war would have gone much differently, dragged on much longer, and would have resulted in much higher US and civilian casualties in the Pacific. How would history judge US strategy in WWII then?
By the way, if you don’t think that the “military-industrial complexes” of France, Russia, and China are steering national policies in those countries, then you are delusional.

It was first used in 1914, by Sir Charles Trevelyan in the Pacifist Manifesto of the Union of Democratic Control. It was used to describe the military-industrial complexes of England and France in the 1880s and 1890s. These were closely followed by the military industrial complexes of Germany, Japan, and the US prior to WWI.
As for the rest of your points, I won’t bother “spinning” anything, as you are obviously too convinced of your own opinions to have a rational discussion with. If this wasn’t the case, you possibly would have interpreted my earlier posts quite differently, a.as there was nothing in either of them that an unbiased reader would take as a justification for doing anything inIraq. All I said was that countries do what is in their own best interests. This has nothing to do with whether it was right or whether the administration gave true reasons for doing it.
In any case, based on YOUR reasoning, there are many other countries we should have attacked before we attacked Iraq, i.e. those with stronger ties to al queda, those confirmed to have WMD, those who are non-secular. I guess we should have nuked Iran and Pakistan instead.

On what do you base your certainty that a government would give a nuke* to a terrorist? All the campaign of fear must’ve really taken hold of your feeble mind, eh? Now here’s where it gets hilarious: The main reason to have nukes is to prevent somebody else from nuking you, because if they’re considering nuking you, you’d like them to think that you can nuke them back. Another reason you’d want to have nukes is to suggest that anyone trying to claim a slice of your territory by conventional warfare had better have nukes because you do – and who knows – if they’re too successful….

If I recall correctly, Iranians spontaneously took to the streets in sympathy for the US about the 911 incident. That was, of course, well before the Abu Ghrahib scandal became public – who knows now. As for the various types of nerve gas used in the Iraq-Iran war, you should consider who helped Iraq develop such weapons in the first place. The Chemical Weapons Convention (http://www.opcw.org) bans the use of riot control agents as means of warfare. Guess who wants to violate that treaty.
There is, by the way, one country in the Middle East with nukes, and I don’t see anyone panicking. Two, if you count the U.S. as “guests.” Sure, it would be unfortunate if Iran developed nukes, but what could you do about it?

I live in Germany and have ready access to all European, US, Middle-eastern and Asian news outlets via TV, radio, and print, so I proudly state that I’m probably better informed than the average US citizen, including yourself.

I also look at http://www.ahmadinejad.ir to see what our friend the warden…er I mean the President of Iran has to say on his blog. Did you even know that he had a blog? I view all of these news sites daily as I like to know what the enemies are thinking. Except Ahmadinejad, I only go there occasionally. So you may or may not be better informed than I.
2. Most people, regardless of left, right, centrist, gay or fascist tend to get their news from sources that agree with their sensibilities; not just American right wingers. Most people are sheep and need a healthy dose of preaching to the choir to make themselves feel good.
