  1. Does anyone use these things as simple supplemental space to their Mac’s hard drive?

What’s the latency like running applications off of these things compared to normal hard drives?

  2. Hey kids! My name’s Tool and that’s perfectly appropriate!

Seriously though. Do you realize that when you read an article like this, the page you’re looking at is literally 98% advertisement? (The other 2% would be comments, and yes, I made these figures up.)

  3. I just got my 500 GB OWC Mercury Elite-AL FW 400+USB 2.0 ($310 after shipping, tax, whatever) and it ROCKS! I’ve been steadily filling it up with movies, music, pictures, etc. I’ve notice zero latency when watching movies or listening to music.

OWC is definitely quality stuff and contrary to “huh_what”‘s sarcasm, I found them through this website. So, thanks MDN!

  4. Seriously though. Do you realize that when you read an article like this, the page you’re looking at is literally 98% advertisement?

Your 100% right, MDN takes advertising to a whole new level.

Some user to user forums do the same thing occasionally, they just can’t tell the marketeer to buy ad space in stead of deceitfully advertising in the user to user forums.

Somebody asks “What’s a good hard drive” thinking they are asking their peers.

The next thing you know you got shills fighting over one another to get to the pigeon.

As a chief moderator for a high traffic site, I’ve booted tons of these fscking shills off the boards to preserve them as a user to user forum as it was intended. This kept the users coming because they knew it was a reputable site.

Well one day the owner of the site got threatened to be sued because I booted a developer apparently for spamming the boards. I got chewed out so I told him to go fsck himself.

Where is this popular site now? It’s gone, folded up, bankrupt and the users gone.

Just because the owner had no balls to stick to his guns and make the marketeers buy ad space.

No money, the users left because they kept getting spammed. The good people working also left.

  5. No sarcasm here, Bill. Dynamic Mesh knows what I’m talking about. I know MDN has bills to pay and that ads are the only way, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But articles like this are 100% advertisement no matter how good the product they’re advertising.

That said, I’m not fundamentally opposed to this kind of thing. But I do think they should include a disclaimer, like many other reputable blogs do.

  6. Just to clarify huh_what and Dynamic Mesh’s points: This post is clearly a press release written by OWC. Most of MDN’s posts are written by MDN, so when MDN posts a press release verbatim, it leads readers to think that the language (which flatters the products) is coming right from MDN.

I appreciate the reader feedback confirming the value of these products, but MDN should clearly mark these posts as being press releases or advertising.

  7. MDN needs to run a disclaimer that OWC is a regular advertiser whenever they run an article about OWC, and there are a lot of them.
Yes, it is their site and they can run anything they want, but they need to run a disclaimer whenever they do this.

I’ve complained about this before (as others have done) and MDN has so far ignored us.

    Shame on you MDN!!!

I’ll still come to this site, and $100 price reduction from a good company IS a worthy story, but your credibility is damaged.

  8. A lot these “articles” are press releases from companies selling something. What’s the problem? If Apple announces a new Mac or a new configuration for a MacBook, I don’t think anyone would have a problem with that “advertisement” being reported on MDN. It’s not like I’m paying to view the article.

And in this case, I was very happy to find out about this sale on the 500GB size packages. I have the “Version 1” miniStack, and it is a great external drive (USB 2.0 or Firewire) / Firewire hub / USB hub combo device, whether you use it with a Mac mini or any Mac.

  9. Regardless of what the article looks like, I agree with other posters about OWC. I have a 250GB external drive from them for my Cube. It works great! I’ve never had a problem and their customer service is very Mac-friendly and responsive.

    No kickbacks here!

MW: “also” – as in me, too.

  10. I doubt MDN gets specific cash in exchange for such articles but I would not be at all surprised to learn that OWC considers such postings when considering its ad budget. Folks that post their press releases are likely to get favorable treatment.

That said … many such press releases are of value to folks potentially interested in their content. If I was in search of a 500 GiggleByte drive for my Mac, this would certainly be newsworthy to me. My own laughably-large NAS is only half that size and is not yet half full even given three regular users for over a year.
